Misleór (Cant/Gammon word for ‘wanderer’) is Galway’s inaugural festival celebrating the rich heritage of nomadic cultures. In a bold move of resistance, celebration and collaboration, Misleór will showcase music, art, film, theatre and poetry from a variety of nomadic minority communities. Through the lens of creativity and cultural action for change, the festival will evoke important social dialogue about ethnic nomads and the barriers, prejudice and discrimination that they often face.Co-funded by Galway 2020 as part of the Small Towns Big Ideas programme

Traveller, Roma, Nomad only space, facilitated by Leanne McDonagh, Traveller artist and Bridget Kelly, Deputy coordinator of Galway Traveller Movement.

Panel discussions featuring leaders from nomadic and minority communities. A ‘deliberative dialogue space’ created to listen to nomadic people’s stories, posing a challenge to member states in Europe calling for the full implementation of cultural rights. Discussions will cover issues such as language, land rights, free movement/migration and protection against discrimination and racism.

Guests include Jess Smith (Scottish Traveller) Oein DeBhairduin (Irish Traveller), Davie Donaldson (Scottish Traveller), Emma Elliane Oskal (Sami, Norway), Jonathan Lee (Welsh Romany - European Roma Rights Centre), and Gabi Muntean (Roma, Ireland).

Sami Blood - Special screening - winner of the European Parliament LUX Film Prize in 2017. Elle Marja, 14, is a reindeer-herding Sámi girl. Exposed to the racism of the 1930’s and race biology examinations at her boarding school she starts dreaming of another life. To achieve this other life she has to become someone else and break all ties with her family and culture.Time Traveller the award-winning Irish short film will also be showcased with special guest Tom Doran, Traveller actor. Screenings followed by a gathering and wine reception in the Pálás bar. Organised with the support of the European Parliament Office in Ireland and Screen Ireland
