His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhu-påda lived in this world from 1896 to 1977. Born in Calcutta,India, he first met his spiritual master, Çrîla BhaktisiddhåntaSarasvatî Gosvåmî, in 1922. At their first meeting he wasasked to spread the Vedic knowledge all over the world, andduring his many years as a married businessman, he oftencontemplated this order of his spiritual master. At the age of63, he accepted the renounced order of life (sannyåsa) to helpfulfill this mission. From his humble surroundings at theRådhå-Dåmodara temple in V®ndåvana, he began work onhis life’s masterpiece: a multivolume English translation ofthe eighteen-thousand-verse Çrîmad-Bhågavatam completewith elaborate commentary.
In 1965, with 40 rupees in his pocket, he came byfreighter from India to New York City. After almost a yearof great difficulty and heroic perseverance, he establishedthe International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Inthe twelve short years before he passed away, he hadguided the Society and watched it grow to a worldwidesociety of more than one hundred åçramas, schools, tem-ples, institutes, cultural centers, and farm communities.
In Çrîla Prabhupåda's own view, his most significantcontribution is his books. Highly respected by scholars fortheir authority, depth, and clarity, they are used as text-books in numerous college courses. His writings have beentranslated into over fifty languages. Despite his advancedage, Çrîla Prabhupåda circled the globe fourteen times onlecture tours that took him to six continents. Yet this vig-orous schedule did not slow his prolific literary output. Hiswritings constitute a veritable library of Vedic philosophy, religion, literature, and culture.
