Satire“A work or manner that blends a censorious attitude with

humour and wit for improving human institutions or humanity.”

What does that mean?

Satire is a humorous criticism meant to improve an individual or society by exposing abuses (flaws)

In TONE, satire can range from light humour to bitter criticism

Its chief tools are WIT, IRONY, EXAGGERATION, INCONGRUITY, PARODY, REVERSAL and sometimes SARCASM and RIDICULE

• EXAGGERATION – to enlarge, increase or represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen. Caricature is the exaggeration of a physical feature or trait (political cartoons). Burlesque is the ridiculous exaggeration of language (ex. When a character who should use formal, intelligent language speaks like a fool or a character who is portrayed as uneducated uses highly sophisticated, intelligent language

• INCONGRUITY – to present things that are out of place or are absurd in relation to its surroundings. Particular techniques include oxymoron, metaphor, and irony

• PARODY – to imitate the techniques and/or style of some person, place, or thing in order to ridicule the original. For parody to be successful, the reader must know the original text that is being ridiculed

• REVERSAL – to present the opposite of normal order. Reversal can focus on the order of events, such as serving breakfast for dinner. Additionally, reversal can focus on hierarchical order (ex. When a young child makes all the decisions for a family or when an administrative assistant dictates what the company president decides and does

There are two types of SATIRE:

1 - Formal Satire (direct)

satiric voice speaks usually in first person, either directly to the reader or to a character in the satire

2 - Indirect Satire

the satire is expressed through a narrative and the characters who are the butt are ridiculed by what they themselves say and do

Dunkin Donuts Diet FoodFor immediate release: New "Donut Hole" fills gap in Diet food market.

(ACPA-Atlanta) For years, Dunkin Donuts met the demands of the discerning American palate with their sugary round treats. But that all changed when a donut research genius came up with the idea of selling Donut Dots, that tasty little bit left over when you cut a

hole in the donut.

The Donut Industry was revolutionized and the public could not get enough of this innovative new product. Incredibly, the Boffins have done it again and Dunkin Donuts is

set to launch it's third line of donut products - the new Donut Hole.Aimed at customers who want lower calorie treats, the Donut Hole is the bit left over

when the dot is cut out and the main donut is eaten.Taste Without Calories

Unlike other tasteless zero calorie food, such as diet coke and fat-free yogurt, initial tests indicated that the taste is pleasing and the only side effect is a slight excess burping if the holes are swallowed too fast. But, by simply slowing down and taking it easy with a

cup of coffee, that problem is typically eliminated.Analysts predict this new ultra low-calorie fat-free product will revolutionize the diet food

market as companies race to find similar products.Initially, it will be launched in regular and cinnamon flavors, but if the product takes off

the line will be expanded.Already rumored to be up for a "Product Innovation of the Year" award, the Donut Hole

will start at 99 cents per hole, with a "buy one get one free" special introductory offer for the first month.
