The Salvation Army enters a New Year with a Mission that has Echoes

throughout the years…

What We Do

The Salvation Army arrived in Kansas and Missouri more than 125 years ago to feed the hungry, clothe the poor

and bring hope to the dispirited.

Support Us

Your gifts of goods and financial support are investments that will be repaid many times over by the thousands of

lives changed each day.

Get Involved

Often referred to "the Army behind the Army," volunteers play a crucial role in our ability to help those in need

in our communities.

ANNUAL GIFT GIVING DISTRIBUTION AT WICHITA, KANSAS

The Wichita Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network helped the Salvation Army at this year’s

Christmas Gift Distribution at the “Big Dog Building” on East Douglas. Those that helped this year included

(from left to right below) David KD0BGH, Dee Travis, Luke K0LTB, Duane KD0IIC, Dan KC0NXF, Mike

K0LMS, James KD0GJY, Aldin KD0IJJ, and Cheryl Warner from the Salvation Army. Not pictured were JB

KD0CSL, Larry AB0RC, Rodney W0REM, Stephanie KE0BQE and of course the man behind the camera, Roger

Bailey N6ZOP. Oops, don’t forget about Santa Claus on the left side. (Image below)

We started at around 0800 in the morning of December 18. Our main function was to help with the

communications for the key people of the event. There were 3,700 plus families and over 5,000 kids taken care of

this year. The event runs for three days and we helped for the first two days until it slowed down and we were no

longer needed.

When we first started helping at this event over ten years ago, Cheryl Warner didn’t know how we could help her.

That is when we jumped in and showed her just what we can do. Since then, she doesn’t want to do the event

without us.

Dan KC0NXF was stationed at the main

entrance door. His main job was to help

keep the folks coming in and keep it

moving. (Left)

James KD0GJY and Jill (from the local Salvation Army Office) are

pictured in the center. Jill was Cheryl’s right hand person this year. Jill

solved problems throughout the day. (Right)

James AJ5BS was with Major Carole Caddy most of the day. Major Carole was all

over the building all day long. Major Glen Caddy was also working in the building. (Left)

Luke K0LTB was watching the exit door making sure

nobody came in who wasn’t supposed to come into the

building. He also helped train the volunteers for the

carry out job that helped folks get their gifts out to

their cars. (Left)

Mike’s K0LMS main job was to keep an eye on

Cheryl Warner in case someone needed her. That is

hard to do most of the time, but I did manage to catch

them sitting down on the job. (Left)

I don’t want to forget the folks back around the bicycle and big package pickup area. Pictured are Dee Travis

(seated at table on left), Marylou (a volunteer with EDS in the red and white cap), Rodney W0REM (seated to the

right of the table) and Stephanie KE0BQE (standing at the far right of the picture).

Safe From Harm Course Now On Line…

The course “Safe from Harm” may now be taken online. As you are aware, successful completion of the course

Safe from Harm is one of the requirements for a national badge issued by The Salvation Army. The other

requirements include the completion of the course Introduction to Emergency Disaster Services and a clean

background investigation.

While it is preferable for all to take the course Safe from Harm in person, we do understand the high cost of

travel and time constraints can limit your options. Therefore, we hope that many of you who have not been able

to attend a training session in person will use this opportunity to take the course online.

To take the course online, please provide me with your full name, callsign and your email address. This

information may be sent to me at [email protected] . I will then forward your information to Deb Abner,

Assistant Director of Emergency Disaster Services, who will provide you the link for the class.

Thank you in advance for your consideration. I appreciate your continued support of the SATERN program.

Congratulations to the following SATERN members who recently completed the SFH Class

on-line.

Why Volunteer Hours are Important:

Each month Henry Monton, WØIE, our Assistant Divisional Coordinator, makes a request (or two) for our

volunteer hours. These reported volunteer hours are important. The volunteer hours show The Salvation Army

the commitment of our SATERN Program and its members to the Emergency Disaster Services Program. As you

know, sometimes you can do a lot but if it is not reported, it seems like it never happened. These volunteer hours

reported are used in combined reports submitted by EDS personnel to the Division. The volunteer hours

(particularly related to deployment) are used in reports for grant applications and other funding sources for The

Salvation Army. Volunteer hours represent cost savings to The Salvation Army.

If you do not currently report your volunteer hours, we would appreciate your consideration in doing so. There is

no need to break down the hours into any categories. Simply, just send the total number of volunteer hours spent

on SATERN or other Salvation Army Projects to [email protected] at the end of each month.

Thank you for your consideration. Rich NØENO
