Pattern Notes

The sweater is knit in one piece up to the armholes. At the armholes, you will work each front and the back sepa-

rately, but simultaneously. You will need a separate ball of yarn for each section, so plan ahead and wind small

balls for each section.

Decreases at the beginning for the row will should be worked as ssk on RS rows, and p2tog on WS rows. Decreas-

es at the end of the row will be worked as a k2tog on RS rows and a p2tog tbl on WS rows.

Sweater

Body

With circular needles, CO 51 (59, 63, 72, 78, 84), place marker (pm), CO 58 (64, 70, 78, 84, 90), pm, CO 51 (59,

63, 72, 78, 84). Knit 4 rows, then begin stockinette stitch (st st) starting with a right side (RS) row, at the same

time, begin decreases on each end. Decrease 1 stitch on each end every row 2 (8, 6, 9, 10, 5) times, then every

other row 34 (33, 37, 40, 44, 52) times. Work until body measures 5 (5.5, 6, 6.5, 7.5, 8.5) inches. Not all decreases

will be completed at this point.

Work in pattern to first marker (continuing prescribed decreases), attach a new ball of yarn and work to next

marker, attach another ball of yarn and work to end (continuing prescribed decreases). Work each section sepa-

rately but simultaneously until 15 (18, 20, 23, 24, 27) shoulder stitches remain on each front (the 2 ends) and

the body measures 9.5 (10, 11, 12, 13.5, 15) inches from cast on edge. Place the front shoulder stitches on

stitch holders.

Shape Neck and Join Shoulders

Work 15 (18, 20, 23, 24, 27) sts, BO 28 (28, 30, 32, 36, 36), work 15 (18, 20, 23, 24, 27). Transfer each set of

front shoulder sts to a dpn. Join the front and back shoulder sts with a 3 needle bind off.

Sleeves (make 2)

CO 51 (54, 60, 66, 72, 78) sts for the top of the sleeve. Work in st st, decrease 1 st on each end every 3 rows 6

(3, 6, 11, 8, 8) times, then decrease 1 st on each end every 4 rows 6 (9, 8, 6, 11, 13) times. 27 (30, 32, 32, 34,

36) sts. On the next WS row, knit 5 rows. BO.

Finishing

Sew the sleeves into the armholes, and sew the sleeve seams.

With the circular needle, beginning at right front, pick up 3 sts for every 4 rows along the right front, then 28

(28, 30, 32, 36, 36) along the back neck, then 3 sts for every 4 rows along the left front. Knit one row.

Form buttonholes on the next row: K2, yo, k2tog, k until 4 sts remain, k2tog, yo, k2. Knit 2 rows, BO. Sew on

buttons opposite the button holes (on the left front, and on the right back).

Leg Warmers Baby legs come in all sizes. Loosely measure the circumference of the thigh and the calf. You may need the

leg warmer to be larger at the thigh, and smaller at the calf, or it may be the same circumference for both meas-

urements. Decrease will begin at 1/2 the total length of the leg warmer. For the examples below, I am using a

total length of 7 inches. The ribbing at the top and bottom of the leg is 1 inch and the ribbing is included in the

total length. Decreases will be made at a rate of 4 sts per rnd, and will be made every 5 rnds. The chart below

shows the measurement of the circumference of the leg in inches, the number of sts you would have for that

measurement, and the st pattern that you will follow to decrease 4 stitches in a round.

Example 1:

Thigh measures 8.5 inches, and calf measures 6.5 inches.

Using dpns, CO 52 sts, work in the round in a [k2, p2] rib for 8 rounds, then work in st st. Begin any needed

decreases after leg warmer measures 3.5 inches (1/2 the total length of leg warmer) from CO edge.

1st decrease rnd: *k11, k2tog; repeat to end of rnd. 48 sts.

Work 4 rnds even (no decreases).

2nd decrease rnd: *k10, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round. 44 sts.

Work 4 rnds even.

Inches Stitches Decrease

8.5 52 *K11, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round.

8 48 *K10, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round.

7.25 44 *K9, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round.

6.5 40 *K8, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round.

6 36 *K7, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round.

5.25 32 *K6, k2tog; repeat from *to end of round.

4.75 28

3rd decrease rnd: *k9, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round. 40 sts.

Work even until leg warmer measures 6 inches. Work in a [k2, p2] rib for 8 rnds. BO in pattern.

Example 2:

Leg that is 6 inches at the thigh and at the calf, CO 36, work in a [k2, p2] rib for 8 rounds. Work even in st st until

leg warmer measures 6 inches, then work in a [k2, p2] rib for 8 rounds. BO in pattern.

Example 3:

Leg that is 8 inches at the thigh and 6.5 inches at the calf, CO 48 sts, work in a [k2,p2] rib for 8 rounds, then work

in st st until leg warmer measures 3.5 inches.

1st decrease rnd: *K10, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round 44 sts.

Work 4 rnds even.

2nd decrease rnd: *K9, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round. 40 sts.

Work even until leg warmer measures 6 inches. Work in a [k2, p2] rib for 8 rnds. BO in pattern.

You may want to make your leg warmers longer or shorter. Begin any decreases at 1/2 the total length. Decrease

the number of rnds between the decrease rnds for shorter leg warmers.
