This year’s Fifth Edition of the Sasol League championship should be blockbuster of a tournament.

It comes in the backdrop of our various women’s teams doing considerably well on the international scene.

The story of our Under/17 team is well documented while our Under/20 girls’ team is very much in the running for a slot in the World Cup scheduled for Canada.

I would want to thank Sheryl Botes who is the coach for both the Under/17 and 20 ladies’ teams. I want to say (to Botes) you are slowly writing your own piece of history and when legends are counted in years to come, your name will proudly be among them.

Keep up the good work.

The Sasol League championship is the bedrock of all our national teams. Almost all of our players are a product of the Sasol League.

The first championship was held in 2009 in Cape Town and was won by Detroit Ladies and since then, Palace Super Falcons have literally made this championship their own, having won it three times in a row.

To other provinces, I want to challenge you to raise your hands and refuse to be ‘bullied’ by Falcons.

I would also like to thank Sasol for sticking to the winning formula of backing women football through and through. Without partners like Sasol, most of the talent that will be displayed here will have gone unnoticed.

I am proud of such a proudly South African company that prides itself in ploughing back into the very society that it does business with.

Enjoy your stay in this serenity of Klerksdorp Town because this should be an exciting tournament and may the best team wins. To those that might fail to go all the way, don’t be discouraged as there is always the next time.

By reaching the finals of this championship, you have already shown your worthiness and you should be proud of yourself.

Once again, good luck to all participants, officials and spectators!

NEW SASOL LEAGUE TROPHY MESSAGE FROM SASOL

43

Dear Friends of Football,

The fifth version of the SASOL National Championships is upon us and we look forward to an improved standard of play. With our continued support for women’s football through the extension of our partnership with the South African Football Association in June this year, Sasol has further entrenched itself as the leading enabler for women’s football development in South Africa.

In the last four years we have been able to empower confident young women who have become role models to thousands of girls across our nation. The SASOL League has created opportunities for some of these girls to further their studies at South Africa’s premier institutions of higher learning, most of whom would otherwise not have been able to further their studies. We urge more partners to share with Sasol in the advancement of the women’s game as we appreciate the enormous task that lies ahead, before the girls can take their rightful place along the best teams in the world.

As a direct feeder to the national women’s football team, Sasol Banyana Banyana, the league continues to successfully identify and nurture new talent for the national women’s teams of all ages. The Sasol League has also consistently afforded an equal opportunity to all aspiring female footballers in becoming elite athletes, regardless of whom they are and where they come from.

We would like to commend all our partners and stakeholders who have been integral in making this initiative a great success. The media has played a critical role in helping us elevate the status of women’s football and have ensured that our communities get regular updates about the women’s games. The team owners, who are doing this for the love of the game of football, have made a significant direct contribution to the empowerment of women through the sport.

Lastly, we would also like to urge all teams to recognize that winning at all cost and by all means possible, is not in the spirit of “Fair play”, and that Sasol does not encourage this practice.

On behalf of Sasol, I congratulate all teams that have made it to this year’s Championships and wish all of them an enjoyable tournament.

As they say in sport, MAY THE BEST TEAM WIN!
