Saskatoon Music Festival 2018 Supplementary Classes to the 2016-2018 Provincial Syllabus

Understanding the Three Levels of Competition within the SMF.

Saskatoon Music Festival (Local)

Competitors, teachers and parents are responsible for obtaining all pertinent local addendum and

provincial and national syllabi and for familiarizing themselves with rules, regulations and

requirements. The local contact person or the local entry secretary will be able to advise you on

class selections that will help you qualify for recommendation to Provincial and National levels.

Saskatchewan Music Festival (Provincial)

In order to be eligible to compete at the PROVINCIAL FESTIVAL - Enter appropriate classes

in the SMFA Syllabus or any approved Local Addendum classes to fulfill the requirements for

recommendation to the Provincial Festival. In addition, an adjudicator’s recommendation is

National Music Festival In order to be eligible to compete at the National Music Festival you must enter the Provincial

National class at your local festival. You need your adjudicator’s recommendation to compete at

the Provincial Festival in the National class. You must have the Provincial adjudicator’s

recommendation in order to proceed to National competition. Be sure to read the National

Syllabus for the specific guidelines and requirements. See www.fcmf.org for the complete

National syllabus.

We trust and rely on the honesty of teachers, parents and students to carefully decide if a student

is in their first or second year of instruction. A year of instruction should be defined as 10 months

of instruction whether consecutive or non-consecutive. Thank you in advance for your co-

could include a complete sonata or a complete non-concerted work. The purpose of

this class is to allow students to return to the Saskatoon festival to compete.

Previous year’s work will be accepted as part of this class; however, selections

performed in this class may not be performed for any other class at the current

festival. The time limit is a minimum of 20 minutes to a maximum of 35 minutes.

The age of the competitors will be in accordance with the age restriction for

Provincial and/or National Classes.

♫ POST-ROMANTIC PIANO SOLO Pieces written in an impressionistic or moderately contemporary style, including most pieces by Debussy,

Ravel, Faure, Poulenc, Albeniz, Granados, Kabalevsky, etc. If in doubt, style of the piece takes precedence

over composer dates.











♫ MODERN PIANO SOLO Music by or in the style of Bartok, Hindemith, Honegger, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, etc. using predominantly

20th Century idioms. Pieces which are mildly contemporary should be entered in the Post-Romantic classes.

♫ PIANO CLASS II

This class is specifically designed for competitors who have performed a selection in the

previous year and wish to compete again with the same song. It is also designed for piano

repertoire at a Grade 9, 10 or ARCT level.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS CLASS DOES NOT COUNT TOWARDS THE MINIMUM OF TWO

CLASSES TO QUALIFY FOR LOCAL OR PROVINCIAL SCHOLARSHIPS.

♫ Walter Thiessen (2015) Saskatoon Festival Class

Class 21000 Walter Thiessen (2015) Class $50.00 A $300 scholarship has been set up to support and celebrate piano students at the Grade 10 level, awarded at the discretion

of the adjudicator. This class is unique in that a competitor is eligible to win the scholarship without entering other

classes, and the competitor may use repertoire from the previous year's festival. New selections prepared for the Thiessen

class may also be entered in other festival classes. The Thiessen class may not be counted as one of two classes necessary

to be eligible for additional Saskatoon Music Festival scholarships, or advancement to Provincial competition. The

competitor must prepare works representing three different eras, (eg. Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist,

Modern). For the Classical Sonata the number of movements will be left to the discretion of the competitor. The

Thiessen program must last a minimum of ten minutes and a maximum of twenty minutes. A competitor may win this

award only once.

JAZZ BAND CLASSES

School Jazz Band classes provide a category for extra-curricular jazz bands only within the

school system. This being done primarily to avoid unfair competition between schools that

offer extra-curricular jazz and highly organized schools offering jazz studies courses. Schools

may have a separate jazz band and jazz study course, but in order to these classes the extra-

curricular jazz band may not contain any members of the jazz studies course.

varied in style, i.e. ballad, swing, latin.
