Golden Goddess, by Maria Barry

Maria likes to look on the brighter side of life, which is evident in her delicate yet dazzling watercolor paintings. Born and raised in England, Maria exhibited an artistic flair from an early age but was discouraged from pursuing her passion in favor of getting a “proper” job. Years later she was to find a new and exciting vehicle through a medium that portrayed a universal language and needed no verbal communication to depict her message - watercolors.

Having traveled extensively through Europe, Maria spent some of her happiest years in and around the Greek Islands. In 1989 Maria took on a more permanent role when she moved to Florida, and continued to work in the international travel industry. Having found her passion in life, Maria is now a full time artist and uses her natural talent to teach classes to those she continues to inspire. Her work can be found in permanent exhibits at some of Orlando’s major attractions including Universal Studios and Gatorland, and in children’s hospitals around the country. Maria combines her love of travel and art by teaching on board Royal Caribbean cruises each year. To see more of her work, visit her etsy shop Maria Barry Art, or find her on Facebook.

This month, Sasee focuses on one of everyone’s favorite topics – romance! In the pages of this issue, you’ll find essays about love, ways to wine and dine your beloved and more. But, what if you are without a partner? What then? For me, at least, it’s a little disheartening to see everyone paired in what seems to be a perfect relationship, everyone, that is, except me. One Valentine’s Day, not too long after I was widowed, I wrote cards to friends and loved ones. I added a small chocolate treat and delivered them. By the time I was done, I felt like a million bucks! This year, I’m thinking of a massage or maybe a mani/pedi. Something totally self indulgent, followed by watching a favorite feel good movie on Netflix. Or, maybe I’ll ask a friend to join me at the spa and go for a glass of wine afterward.

Love comes in many forms and it’s all cause for celebration. I am blessed with the love of good friends and family, plus my beloved furbabies. When I start feeling left out this year, I’m going to focus on them. In addition to the kittens (who are still waiting for the “purrfect” forever home – let me know if you want a great forever friend) and my sweet Annie, I am fostering a dog for friends who are in the middle of building a home. His name is Pongo, and his nearly 100 pounds of loving energy and a tail that rarely stops wagging keep my spirits lifted.

Happy Valentine’s Day – Here’s to love, wherever we may find it!

It was a blind date, facilitated by a friend of mine and a friend of his. I worked at a dental office; he worked at the pharmacy next door--but we’d never met. The pharmacist and the dental assistant that I worked with conspired, and my phone number was given to this unknown whom was deemed perfect for me.

“He has to call first,” I insisted. There would be no dinner or outing where he would appear as a surprise. I figured I could tell by a brief conversation over the phone if he was worth the investment of a Saturday night. If he couldn’t carry on an interesting conversation, I could make up an excuse: I had a cold or I needed to wash my hair.

I pretended I didn’t care if he called or not, but I jumped every time the black, rotary dial phone rang. I’d never been on a blind date before. I imagined myself on the television show, The Dating Game, where one lucky girl or guy got to ask three hopeful contestants silly questions. I tried to think of intelligent questions I could ask my mystery date when (or if ) he called -- questions that would unlock the inner him. I could ask about his favorite books. If he didn’t like to read, it was a no brainer -- just one date. But then, I didn’t want to be inflexible either. I don’t like to fish. I wouldn’t expect someone to make a generalization about me because I couldn’t bait a hook or commune with nature.

A week passed. The “perfect” date, Terry, had not called. Obviously, he wasn’t my type. I was free to wash my hair.

It was mid-way into the second week after he’d gotten my number when he finally called. He’d been on vacation,

he said, apologizing for not calling sooner. He had a nice voice – friendly -- but a bit hard to understand with his thick, northern accent. I still had a bit of my southern drawl and a southern ear. I had to listen hard to understand his words. The conversation raced from one subject to another like tossing a hot potato. And, Terry had a lot to say . . . so many questions: What did I like to do? Did I like action movies? What kind of food did I like? Did I like to fish? (Huh?) Did I like to go camping? (double huh?)

“I like to dance,” I said.

There was a pause in the conversation. I realized we weren’t going dancing.

He recovered quickly, “So would you like to go out Saturday night?”

“Sure,” I said without hesitation.

“Great, I’ll pick you up at 6 o’clock,” he said, taking down the directions to my house. “I drive a gray ca(h),” he added to identify himself.

Just pa(h)k your ca(h) in the driveway, I teased, deleting the hard “r” from my words.

“Ok,” he agreed, laughing. He tried to say goodbye with a southern accent and failed miserably. I really liked this guy.

I hung up the phone. It took a minute to realize I didn’t know where we were going on our date. It was fine; I was

a spur of the moment person myself. I also realized (much to my surprise) I hadn’t asked one single question.

His grey ca(h) pulled into my driveway at exactly 6 o’clock. I was ready in the new pink dress and coordinating scarf I had purchased for the occasion. Bracelets jangled on my wrists and chandelier earrings swung from my ears. The effect was sassy, but discrete -- I’m fun, but not too fun. My make up was perfect; my (clean) hair was long and bouncy; my heels high, but comfortable.

I counted to ten before I opened the door. Terry was already smiling. He looked like he was bursting with energy, even his light brown curls seemed ready to spring. I couldn’t help but smile back.

“So, I thought we could go to the beach, pa(h)k the ca(h) and walk to the restaurant. There’s a carnival with some rides and good music. Maybe a little dancing on the sand,” he said with a wink.

“Sounds like fun,” I said ready to leave.

He hesitated. “Uh, you may want to change into jeans and sneakers.”

“Of course,” I said, fuming as I walked upstairs to don my everyday clothes, knowing he was right. It was not the beginning I had envisioned.

“You look great,” Terry said as I made my re-entrance. His enthusiastic compliment made it all better.

It was a beautiful evening, perfect for the long, leisurely

stroll along the beach. The enormous full moon seemed to sit on top of the water as we made our way to the seafood restaurant. We ate lobster and crabs, and my date slurped a few raw oysters on the half-shell. We ordered two cones of crispy fries to eat as we sat on the dunes, listening to the sounds of the ocean. With our jeans soaked to the knees by the cool, lapping water, we talked non-stop -- as if we’d known each other for years.

Later that night as my mind replayed our date, I remembered that I had left the greasy cone of fries in his glove compartment. I cringed wondering what Terry would think when his car reeked of cooking oil.

He called bright and early the next morning. “You left something in my glove compartment. I thought I should return it as soon as possible.”

“I would appreciate that,” I replied.

Over forty years later, Terry’s not quite as charming about leftover fast food left in the center console, and dancing is still not his thing, but he does it to please me. I, in turn, have gone camping and baited a hook. He still talks a lot, and his accent has never changed. We’re still pa(h)king the ca(h) . . . together.

YOU'LL LOVE THE DECISION YOU MADE TO CALL!

Isabelle and Vianne are two sisters separated by life’s emotional battles. When rumors start that Nazi Germany is conquering Europe, both sisters know their France will stay strong. However, as events unfold and the Nazis occupy Paris, each sister must choose their role in the impending war. Vianne, a housewife, desires to keep her daughter safe and accepts that she may have to provide a haven for the enemy. Isabelle, a young and often foolish girl, desires to be at the frontlines, defending her country. As the war wages on, these two women will have to learn a strength they never imagined was possible.

Kristin Hannah has given readers a unique look inside the heart of the war. The women’s role during this horrific time is one that is often overlooked in novels; however the author provides a world that readers get sucked into from the first page. The narration shows both sisters progressing through the war, as well as an elderly woman forced to face the secrets from her past. The Nightingale is a poignant, soul-wrenching tale of loss, love and humanity in the midst of war.

As a life-long reader, I have come across numerous WWII historical fiction novels. That time period is like a beacon, drawing both authors and avid-readers of all ages. The Nightingale is not just another WWII adult novel, it is not just a love-in-the-time-of-war story, it is an exceptional piece of literature. There have been very few books in my life that have physically moved me to tears, but this one did. This is one story that, as I read the final pages, I knew it had taken a permanent residence in my soul. And once I finished the last page, I sat in my chair, staring into space wondering how I would begin to recover from this epic read.

First Datesby Janey Womeldorf

First dates are brutal. They either succeed and you live happily after, or they reek of cringe-worthy moments that sadly become fodder for party stories years later.

I once engaged in a long-distance relationship with a guy after I met him once, for three hours, when both of us were sitting at an airport bar. Six months later, I flew eight hours to meet him for our first official date only to discover he walked like Big Bird. I had to look away every time he got up; I never knew whether to laugh or cry. My return flight was not until after the weekend, so my first date with Big Bird lasted three excruciating days. There was no second date.

I also once accepted a date from a taxi driver. A week after he picked me up as a fare, he came to pick me up as a date. When we arrived at the bar and he got out of his taxi, I caught my breath -- he only came up to my shoulders -- a startling first for me as I’m only five-foot two myself. “He looked taller from the back of the cab,” I anguished later to my friend. I tried to pretend everything was normal but ached with uncomfortable regret that I had chosen to wear four-inch heels that night. As fate would have it, it quickly became apparent that the only thing we had in common (apart from being short) was absolutely nothing. On a first date, this stark realization slams you within the first five minutes and then lingers like a bad smell. You pretend to listen to the words coming out of their mouth, but only one thought consumes you: What excuse can I find to leave? Despite every minute growing more silent and awkward than the last, I chose to be polite and stay; besides, I needed a lift home -- a risky venture when you’re in a cab after a bad date with its driver.

It’s illegal to have a passenger in your cab if you don’t have the meter on so he left it running. On the way home, the unmistakable click, click of the running meter punctuated

our stony silence. By the time he pulled up, I was in the hole for a potential $221. I made a hasty exit with barely a goodbye, no tip and never looked back. There was no second date.

When she was a teenager, a friend of my Mum’s went on a blind date to the cinema. When her date turned up, he had a visible booger stuck on one of his nose hairs. It vibrated with every breath, and it was all she could do to look at him. The date spiraled downhill from there, and even in the dark she cringed at the thought of staying. Finally, she excused herself to the ladies’ room but could not bring herself to go back. Afraid to walk out through the lobby in case he had also decided to go the bathroom, she was left with no other choice: She climbed out through the bathroom window and went home. My heart still aches for the poor guy, sitting there, waiting and breathing. Needless to say, there was no second date.

The reality is, unless we married the person, most of us, at some point in our dating life have been on both ends of first-date spectrum -- if you even made it that far. I still don’t know what was more painful for me -- getting stood up or going on the date, only to sit afterwards, my heart desperately waiting for a phone that was never going to ring. The only comfort I can derive from this agonizing, first-date rite of passage is that you have to date the frogs to recognize your prince.

And to think, I almost missed mine.

He was my last customer at the end of a stressful day. Feeling guilty for keeping me after hours, he casually offered to buy me a drink to make up for it. My automatic reaction was to refuse, but it had been a long day. After one drink, and some pleasant conversation, I left him at the bar and returned to my office to finish working. A week later,

12

Page 13: Sasee - February 2016

he came into the office and asked me if I’d like to go out on a proper date. “No,” came my punch-in-the-gut response. He was a nice guy; I was just more into my career.

A few days later, he tried again. “No,” I replied for the second time. The following week, in one last-ditch attempt, he came into my office, announced he was going to the launderette to do his laundry and if I wanted to join him for a drink afterwards, to come on down to the launderette to meet him.

At least, I’d be able to see how he folded his socks, I joked to myself. (This was of fundamental importance if we were going to have a future as I came from a long line of ballers.) I laughed at the absurdity of an invite to the launderette, but 30 minutes later, smiled, locked up the office and headed over. I squirmed when I saw that he knotted his socks -- a practice that, in my mind, looks messy and takes up too much room in the sock drawer -- but admired the way he diligently folded and neatly placed everything else into his basket. Once done, we headed back to the same bar from three weeks previous to share a drink and our first formal date together. It was my last, first date ever.

Twenty-six and a half years of fantastic marriage later, my heart skips a beat when I think how close I came to what could have been. He turned out to be my rock, my soul-mate, my sunshine and my prince, and with every passing year, he continues to rock my world.

Even if he does still knot his socks.

Sasee has picked a few of our favorite gift ideas to make yourValentine’s Day one to remember!

Page 16: Sasee - February 2016

Y’all remember Valentine’s Day when we were kids, don’t you? Back in the “olden days,” as my granddaughters would say, it was a big deal in school. We each covered a big box with red, white or pink construction paper. Then we set to cutting out paper hearts. If you folded the construction paper in half, you could be sure that the heart was perfectly symmetrical by cutting a half-heart. Usually, paper doilies came into the picture somewhere along the way, too. In a really good year, you might even have a teacher who provided pipe cleaners.

Everyone put forth their very best effort. Brows furrowed, tongues stuck out in concentration. It was a huge undertaking, all to entice your classmates to stuff a one-sided piece of paper with a goofy picture into the slot at the top. Maybe the “card” would have a picture of a dog or a playful kitten with a greeting like: “You’re pur-r-r-rfect, Valentine.” Sometimes it was Cupid with a quiver full of arrows, imploring you to “Be mine.”

When your mom bought the packs of Valentines for you, invariably, she had to throw down an extra buck or two for an extra pack, as your class size never matched the pack size. She always groused about it, but you didn’t care, because it was Valentine’s Day!

It was the day that even a kinda’ plain kid like me could get a nod from the cutest, smartest, greatest boy in the class, the one whose dad owned the only hardware store in my small town. The one who ended up in the Key Club in high school. Blessedly, book smart though I may have  been, I never realized that everyone gave everyone a Valentine. Back in the day, that’s the way it worked. Everyone’s mom made sure we all did the right thing.

But, eventually, I caught on. Valentine’s Day was for the

pretty girls, the ones who didn’t wear Coke-bottle-bottom glasses. They had perfectly straight blonde hair and looked

suspiciously like Marsha Brady. They had dates to the Valentine’s dances and got boxes of chocolates in their lockers. They weren’t “bookworms” or “really smart.” Or, if they were, they knew enough to keep it under wraps.

Not me. I stood on no ceremony. I was who I was. Take it or leave it. The only trouble was that most of the boys were leaving it. I tried to pretend it didn’t matter. Who cares? Well, I cared. I cared a lot. It made matters worse that my sister was gorgeous, still is actually. Woe is me.

It got to the point that I dreaded February 14th. Poor little thing. No one in the Key Club ever asked me out. No one on the football team ever asked me out. The boy I spent the most time with was on the swim team. The swim team! Oh dear.

Fast forward forty-some odd years. My husband, Gene, and I had been together for a couple of years and were solely committed to each other, although we were not married. But, in the spring of 2014, Gene became incredibly ill. A severe blood infection from a few years earlier came back to haunt him. His mild heart failure progressed rapidly. He required oxygen 24/7. The situation was grim, but I hung in there. I had promised to stay with him, and I meant every word of it.

On July 2nd, 2014, Gene received a biventricular pacemaker at MUSC. The cardiologist’s dream came true. The pacer restored Gene’s health completely. Now, my dream came true, too. Through the course of his illness, Gene finally realized that I had meant what I said. I wasn’t going anywhere. I loved him, heart and soul. And he loved me enough to marry me.

Now, here’s the kicker. Gene looks like a guy out of GQ. He played basketball in high school and was in the hottest fraternity on campus in college. He worked on Wall Street

and wears Brooks Brothers clothes.I remember when he first showed interest in me, and I

asked my friend Laura why he would want a girl like me. I’m not sophisticated or chic or cosmopolitan or even terribly attractive. “Easy,” she replied. “He’s been there and done that, and now he wants someone real.” He loves me, heart and soul.

Of course, it probably didn’t hurt that I traded in my glasses

for contacts and removed the chip from my shoulder. I don’t feel the need to throw down the gauntlet anymore in order to be myself.

Truth be told, what we were in high school and college isn’t

at all important anymore. All that matters is the people we are today. All that matters is that we are devoted to each other,

heart and soul. This Valentine’s Day, that’s the story I’m telling my

granddaughters. Valentine’s Day isn’t just for pretty girls. It’s for all of us who share the day with someone we love -- friends, family or the love of our lives. I want them to know what I wish I had known, back in the “olden days.”

It’s February and finally we are having seasonably cool, some say cold, temperatures. With these chilly days

and nights, ROMANCE is definitely in the air. And living in and around Myrtle Beach affords us locals many opportunities to plan some romantic adventures with the one(s) we love or maybe even like just a little!

Whether celebrating an anniversary, engagement or just a night out, Sasee encourages you to try some new and unique experiences to show that special someone you put a little thought into it!

Sasee women take note: Tear out these three pages and place near the remote!

Any Sasee woman will tell you when her significant other puts some thought and creativity into planning a romantic evening, she is immediately swooning again. Sasee put her thinking cap on and came up with some unique and romantic ways to say, “You are loved, and I am so glad you are mine.”

intimate date nightsAspen Grill, this local’s favorite, is a sophisticated, yet simple restaurant with an ab-

solutely fresh menu. Sit and relax in a warm, comfortable environment and enjoy each

other’s company over a fantastic meal, a bottle of wine and live entertainment. The

perfect place for a quiet night out for two!

Special occasions call for a special setting, and no one offers more options and ambi-

ance for private dining than Collector’s Cafe & Gallery. Not to mention the most

incredible, interesting, freshest and innovative menu around. If you want to impress

your date, Collector’s is a must.

Ciao is an intimate restaurant with Old World appeal. If you’re craving incredible Italian

cuisine and intimacy, Ciao is a your perfect date night spot. Be sure to share the Mango

Passion Sorbet with a white chocolate shell covered in raspberry drizzle. That and an

Italian Red make the perfect romantic ending.

The Library is the ultimate in intimate dining experience with exquisite table settings,

subdued lighting, wait staff in tuxedos preparing most foods tableside and ending with

fabulous flambé desserts yielding a most enjoyable and romantic evening.

Nothing says “I adore you” more than hiring a professional ca-

adventuresome andromantic day datesTake in the breathtaking beauty and serenity of our coastline

by horseback. Horseback Riding of Myrtle Beach runs

tours through the end of February. If you are an experienced

rider you may trot ahead with your special someone. A fun

outdoor date can be just as romantic as spending the evening

at a restaurant.

Sasee says, if it is romantic enough for The Bachelor then it must

be romantic….call one of the various helicopter companies in

Myrtle Beach and schedule a custom, breathtaking coastline

tour. Holding hands and looking at our beautiful beaches -- it

doesn’t get any more romantic.

Ride the Skywheel and watch the sunset over the waterway.

as you experience our daily, gorgeous, winter sunsets.

passionate kisses Grab a blanket and watch the sunrise on the beach, walk hand in

hand for a brisk stroll, followed by breakfast at Sea Captains House or 2nd Ave. Pier where this time of year you can spot

dolphins splashing and playing in the Atlantic.

Head out to one of the many incredible day spas such as Kiva Day Spa at Kingston Plantation and spend the day together

being pampered with the Serenity Couples Massage or combine

several of your favorite services in their Serenity Combinations.

Leave rested, pampered and relaxed.

lovers of fabulous meats

(For that man or woman who doesn’t like small portions)

If you want to dine on some of the finest beef around, be waited

on like royals and leave after enjoying a fine dining experience,

then New York Prime is your best bet. This local’s favorite

happens to be the sea bass which melts in your mouth, perfectly

prepared and scrumptious. Of course, hubby wants the beef and

says it is the best in town.

For the connoisseur of large steaks, Angelos Steak & Pasta

is the ticket. Well known for their delectable steaks, which are

cut on site, aged perfectly, seasoned and served in any size up

to 24 ounces. And if you save room, the Brownie Gelato is the

perfect ending to your date -- you’ll never experience anything

like it again.

cool, chic and urbanIf you want your date to be out of the ordinary, feel like you are

in a metropolitan city, experience cocktails like never before

and food out of this world, then you need to experience The Chemist. The Chemist combines lots of elements to create a

fabulously tasteful locale for food and drink near the boardwalk.

Sasee suggests that after a romantic ride on the Skywheel, walk

over to The Chemist for a ride you will not soon forget.

Rooftop21, the open air jewel of Soho Café & Bar, is the one

and only rooftop bar and lounge in Myrtle Beach, with a menu

offering natural ingredients like grass-fed beef, free-range chick-

en and eggs and wild-caught seafood. A vertical garden wall and

cocktails is combined with a dreamy atmosphere that can’t be

beat. Don’t worry about being cold -- heaters and fire pits offer

abundant warmth on these snuggly winter nights!

sasee out and about

February in Myrtle Beach is a gift to those of us who live here – now

we can experience all this beautiful city has to offer without the hustle

and bustle of the tourist season. While out and about, Sasee stopped by

Soho Café and Bar and had a lively chat with general manager Lawrence

Decker while sitting in Rooftop21, the only rooftop bar along the Grand

Strand.

The urban, intimate décor of Rooftop21 gave me the feeling of being

in a much larger city. During the cooler months, the open air seating is

enclosed with heavy plastic sheeting and the area is warmed by overhead

heaters and fun fire pits. We sat on comfortable couches and watched

the sunset – the city lights after dark are beautiful and, in my opinion,

the best time to visit this unique bar. There is room for big groups to sit

together, but also quiet corners for more intimate gatherings.

While we enjoyed a glass of wine (at great happy hour prices from 4-7

pm), Lawrence talked about his life and work. Lawrence, a mixologist

who has won 28 awards, moved to Myrtle Beach from Pennsylvania to

work at the House of Blues after vacationing here and falling in love with

the area – and the weather. From the House of Blues, Lawrence moved

to Bistro 90 and on October 11th of last year, he took over management

of Soho Café and Bar.

“This building was completely remodeled before we opened last fall,”

Lawrence began. “It has quickly become a local’s favorite. We’re busy

every night! I think the best way to describe us is Miami chic meets New

York – it’s a very unique place.”

While he works long hours (110 hours one week soon after the new

restaurant opened!), Lawrence does find time for fun occasionally. He

and his partner of 13 years live on the northern end of Myrtle Beach on

a golf course with their three cats. “I don’t have time to play golf, but I

do like the driving range!” His friends are always happy when he plans a

party at home where he cooks amazing dinners from scratch.

Every spring, Lawrence travels to Augusta, Georgia, to work in the VIP

tents at the Masters Golf Tournament. One of the few, elite restaurant

professionals chosen, it is one of the highlights of his year. “I grew up

around celebrities, so that’s not a problem for me. My dad worked on

television sets doing lighting – he worked on the set of “CHIPS” when I

was growing up. For 15 days every April, I help manage the tents set up

for green jacketed guests only, who pay $17,000 each for the privilege.

There are twelve bars and four sandwich shops. Last year, I met Condo-

leezza Rice, who was the first woman and African American to have a

membership. It’s a lot of work, but I love it.”

Lawrence’s partner works for Delta Airlines, and he can travel anywhere

he wants for free. “Last year I flew to London, Paris and Amsterdam. I

have family in Atlanta and will fly down to have dinner with them and

fly back the same day – it’s great!”

I asked Lawrence about the food at Rooftop21. “We have a wonderful

tapas menu that is mostly local, wild caught and organic. Our guests can

also order from our sushi menu – my favorite roll is the Dancing Eel, but

actually they are all wonderful!”

When you stop by for a drink at Rooftop21, if wine or beer is not your

thing, try Lawrence’s favorite drink, a Brazilian cocktail called Caipir-

inha 21. Sasee may be “Out and About” most anytime over the next few

months – let us know your favorite places!

We offer quick response with local staff & weekend and holidayadmissions. If you have Medicare Part A, you have a hospice benefit.

• Hospice is not a place, it is a concept of care delivered in the home setting. Our care includes a strong emphasis on the spiritual component of a person. We believe in faith and family and strive to support both in the home setting. Our comprehensive hospice services are available wherever you call home.

When families make a decision about hospice care,it helps to have a good understanding of what hospice is,

and what it isn’t.

• Hospice is not a death sentence; it’s about recognizing someone’s life-limiting illness, controlling symptoms and improving quality of life rather than seeking a cure. It is not giving up hope; it is about preserving hope.

•Hospice is not only for cancer patients; cancer diagnoses account for less than half of all hospice admissions. Other common diagnoses include heart failure, lung diseases, kidney failure, Alzheimer’s/Dementia and others.

• Hospice care is not expensive; the hospice benefit is paid by Medicare, Medicaid and by most private insurers, meaning that there are no financial burdens incurred by the family.

Give Your Mom, Sister, Best Friend or Yourselfthe Gift that Lasts a Year!

Page 28: Sasee - February 2016

“I’m the mouth, he’s the brains,” laughed Judy Springs when asked about her long marriage to husband Julien. This attractive, Myrtle Beach couple will celebrate their 36th anniversary on October 4th this year, have raised three successful children and are expecting their first two grandchildren. Best of all, Judy and Julien are still a happily married and devoted couple.

Regional Vice President at First Palmetto Bank, Julien is a native of Myrtle Beach and has worked in the banking industry for 35 years. His father was the first surgeon at Ocean View Memorial Hospital, the first hospital along the Grand Strand, and his grandfather, Retired Brigadier General Holmes Springs, founded the HP Springs Real Estate Com-pany in 1924 and retired from the military after serving his country in both World Wars. General Springs and the Woodside Brothers from Greenville helped build the legendary Ocean Forest Hotel and the Pine Lakes area.

Almost a native, Judy moved to Myrtle Beach at 12 years old from Flor-ida, when her dad, a PGA golf pro, came here as the area’s golf industry skyrocketed. After working in sales for many years, first for Strand Media Group, then Sheriar Press, Judy currently manages Caledonia Weddings and works part time at Hucks & Washington Furniture in Conway. “I have two part time jobs that I love,” said Judy. “Julien’s dad was among

a group of friends that developed Caledonia, and we have always had people asking to get married there. My children wanted to get married there, too, so we decided to start doing weddings.”

“When I was growing up, Myrtle Beach was like two different cities,” said Julien. “It was a big city in the summer, with lots of tourists, and a small, quiet town in the winter. It’s my home and I love it.” Judy added, “We enjoy the Myrtle Beach of today and love trying new restaurants, but we don’t do a lot of typical tourist things. Julien’s mother has a house in Garden City and that’s usually where we go to the beach.” Home is the favorite place for both Judy and Julien. “He’s the best cook and does wonderful seafood and wild game dishes.”

“Julien and I met through mutual friends,” began Judy. “We knew each other before that though,” Julien interjected. “Probably since junior high school.” Julien laughed and continued, “She was a little intimidating back then – tall and beautiful!” The couple started dating in high school, and dated for eight years before marrying a year after both graduated from the University of South Carolina.

Julien proposed on Valentine’s Day, 1979 and popped the question at the Library Restaurant. “That was the nicest restaurant in Myrtle Beach at the time,” he reminisced. I asked Julien what made him fall in love with Judy, and he said, “She was (still is) so beautiful, with long brown hair and blue eyes – I just liked everything about her, and we became best friends.” At that time, Julien was a lifeguard/surfer, and Judy inspired

him to excel in school and, subsequently, his ca-reer. “We brought two different elements to the table,” began Judy. “Julien is from a large family and mine is small. I am the oldest in my family and he is the youngest. Opposites attract and give relationships a balance.” The couple went on to tell me that this balance has contributed to their successful relationship. “We each have our own careers and never interfere in what the other is doing, but we come together on important family issues, like raising children.”

“We were married at First United Method-ist Church in Myrtle Beach, the church Julien’s family help start,” Judy told me with a big smile. The wedding was very traditional, and the couple began their life together living and working in Myrtle Beach. Their oldest son, Lash, was born in 1986, and the couple had identical twin girls, Candice and Caroline, in 1988.

“When I found out I was pregnant with twins, I bought two pacifiers, wrapped them up and took them by Julien’s office to surprise him with the news. I told him we had a baby gift, and I wanted him to open it. Of course, I was crying, but I had my sunglasses on so Julien wouldn’t know.” After he got over the initial shock and delight of knowing he was going to be the father of twins, the ever practical Julien’s first reaction was to tell Judy, “Well, you’re going to have to sell the car – time for a station wagon!” Judy had just bought a new Maxima, and it was definitely not big enough for twins and a two year old. “We have laughed at that story for years,” Judy told me, still tickled at her husband’s reaction.

“We spent five years without children and suddenly our whole lives changed,” Judy said when asked about some of the greatest challenges in her marriage. “Life in general can be hard, from raising children to caring for sick parents to economic ups and downs.” Julien then spoke up and said he and his bride have always managed to stay grounded through the ups and downs of life. “Find your balance, keep the faith and keep God first in your life. Raising children is the hardest job you’ll ever do – and the most rewarding.”

Both Julien and Judy agreed that their children were also the best and most rewarding things about their marriage as well. “With the children grown now and grandchildren on the way, it is very satisfying. We have always been very consistent and dedicated to doing what was best for our family.” Even though they both worked full time, their children always came first. “When you have children, it’s no longer about you; you have to think about them first. And, it’s the same with marriage, it’s not just

about you anymore,” Judy said thoughtfully.“You have to compromise, and you have to com-municate,” began Judy when asked about the se-cret to her successful marriage. “We have always encouraged each other to do the things that make us happy.” Julien always wanted to go to Africa and with Judy’s support and encouragement he made the trip two years ago. “And, you can’t change anyone,” Judy laughed. “I tell my children the same thing; talk everything out and remem-ber to laugh.”

Judy and Julien made it a priority to sit down with their children for dinner every night, but also took time away just to be a couple and keep the romance alive. “We went on a trip to St. Thomas and stayed on a friend’s sailboat – that was one of the most romantic times we’ve had together. We sailed it together, just the two of us.” Julien’s romantic memory is definitely a little more prag-matic and masculine. “She bought me my favorite

shotgun -- I had wanted it for a long time,” he said. “She’s a great gift giv-er.” Traditionally a day of romance, Valentine’s Day is usually celebrated quietly at the Springs’ home. “It isn’t as big a deal to us as the anniversary of our first date, November 17th, but we’ll probably go out to dinner.”

Today, the couple lives in Pine Lakes Country Club and takes pleasure in every day together. To close, I asked them their advice for young couples on making a lasting, happy marriage. “Marriage is hard work, working together will bring great success,” began Julien. “Be consistent, be posi-tive and keep the faith,” added Judy. “God has to be the center of your marriage.”

“What kind of potato chips do we have?” He asked, jolting awake from a nap.

I sat down on the bed next to him and smiled. He looked at me

and then around the room. His eyes came back to me, and I could see the resignation in his eyes.

He’s realized that he’s in the hospital, and given his current

situation, his question didn’t make any sense. He’s given us another scare, this one worse than the last. He’s had

his fourth stroke, and his second in eight weeks. The others affected his motor skills, but this latest one has attacked him cognitively.

He’s been married to the love of his life for 51 years, and they

have eight children together. The kids have come from near and far to sit at his bedside. And while I’m just his daughter-in-law, I’ve been privileged to join in the vigil.

Yesterday, he called me by my niece’s name. We’re both blondes,

but she’s 19, so I took it as a compliment. Today, he remembered that I’m Eric’s wife, but couldn’t recall my name. Most often, he refers to me as That Girl.

Larry has been on a slow decline for years, but this last stroke

has really taken a toll. An MRI showed large voids in his brain, damaged from all the strokes.

No wonder he doesn’t remember me. This is a new development, and although I know it’s nothing

personal, it hurts just a bit. Just eight weeks ago, he always recognized me. Every time I

came over, he was sitting in his recliner, eating Vanilla Wafers and watching The Waltons on television. As soon as I walked in the door, he’d mute the TV and grin at me.

My mother-in-law, Judy, was away for the week. She had traveled to Florida to visit her brother and sister-in-law and escape the snow for a bit. Because Larry was still in relatively good shape at that point, we’d agreed that our oldest son, Austin, would stay with him while she was gone. I was to bring him dinner each evening and look in on him while Austin was at work.

The first night, when it was time to deliver his meal, my six-year-

old son asked to go with me. “Of course, Nathan,” I said. “Grandpa would love to see you.” So while Larry ate the food I’d prepared, Nathan sat in Larry’s

empty wheelchair and talked to him. “Wanna hear all the Bible stories I know?” He asked.

Larry’s eyes lit up. His grandkids always brought on such a

reaction. Nathan told his Grandpa all about Adam and Eve, and Noah

and the ark, and Joseph and his coat of many colors. He was just starting in on Moses when Larry finished eating. I took his plate into the kitchen and put it in the dishwasher. I glanced at the clock and remembered everything that I needed to do back at my house.

“Are you ready to go home, Nathan?” “Not yet, Mommy. I need to finish telling Grandpa about Moses

and the Red Sea and the Ten Commandments.” “OK, Bud, you go ahead and finish.” But when he’d finished that story, he wanted to tell Grandpa

about Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. And then it was David and Goliath. And then Daniel and the lions’ den.

That Girlby Diane Stark

36

Multiple times, I’d asked Nathan if he was ready to go, but each time, he and Larry both insisted that they were still talking. While I was glad they were enjoying themselves and impressed with Nathan’s Biblical knowledge, I was ready to go. I had things to do.

“It’s time to go now, Nathan.” He sighed and threw up his hands. “But I haven’t even gotten

to Jesus yet!” “We have to come back tomorrow, Nathan. You can tell Grandpa

about the New Testament then.” The next evening, and every night of Judy’s vacation, Larry was

treated to a dinner theatre. Nathan sat in Larry’s wheelchair and just talked to him. When he ran out of Bible stories, he told Larry about his teacher and his friends at school. For two hours every night, Nathan hardly took a breath in between his stories.

Larry asked Nathan tons of questions, and it was obvious he

loved every minute of it. I, however, struggled to be patient. Checking in on Larry was not supposed to take two hours every night. I had things to do at home.

But now, sitting by his hospital bed, knowing that his time left

with us could be short, I regretted my impatience. A conversation that I took for granted just two months ago was now impossible. I squeezed his hand and smiled at him through my tears.

“Do you remember a few weeks ago when Judy went on vacation

and Nathan and I brought you dinner?” I asked him. He just stared at me. I smiled so he’d know it was all right if he didn’t remember.

“Nathan talked non-stop. He told you all the Bible stories he knew.”

I chuckled. “And he knew a lot of them!” Larry thought for a minute. “Yeah, that girl came over.” “That girl was me.” “Really? I don’t think so.” I nodded. “It was me. Nathan and I had fun visiting with you.”  “Yeah. I love Nathan.” He smiled at me and for just a moment, I

saw recognition in his eyes. “I love that girl too.” My tears spilled over as I hugged him. “I love you too, Larry.” A few minutes later, he looked around the room. “Where did

that girl go?” “Who? I’m the only one here.” He shrugged. “Then I guess I mean you.” “I’m here, Larry, and I’m not going anywhere.” He smiled and drifted back to sleep. Larry might not always know my name, but our hearts still

connect in precious moments. And I’ve learned – finally – not to take those moments for granted.

Some of the most intimate and romantic dates are at home with the two of you nestled in front of a roaring fireplace (inside or outside) while sip-ping on your favorite drink. Turn on some smooth jazz or a little Marvin Gaye, and spend your evening at home. Sasee offers some of her favorite

elegant, yet easy to prepare, recipes for an ideal romantic date. Cheers!

Preheat the oven to 500 degrees. Place the beef on a baking pan and pat the outside dry with a paper towel. Spread the butter on with your hands. Sprinkle evenly with the salt and pepper. Roast in the oven for exactly 22

Some say chocolate is a romantic trigger when paired with a wonderful glass of red wine or cappuccino. If you have never tried the triple chocolate mousse torte from Croissants Bistro and Bakery, you are missing a treat. Stop by and buy a whole torte or just a few slices, top with strawberries or raspberries for an incredible dessert you will enjoy.

Personally, I am a pound cake lover from the days when my Mama made them from scratch. The closest I can find, and may perhaps even tops Mama’s, is the fabu-lous pound cake from Priceless Desserts. Whether you eat it plain or topped with real whipped cream and fruit, there is nothing finer. And you can heat it up the next morning with a cup of coffee to begin the romance all over again!

Brussel Sprouts with PancettaRecipe from Barefoot Contessa Parties! by Ina Garten

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Place the Brussels sprouts on a sheet pan, including some of the loose leaves, which get crispy when they’re roasted. Add the pancetta, olive oil, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper, toss with your hands, and spread out in a single layer. Roast the Brussels sprouts

for 20 to 30 minutes, until they’re tender and nicely browned and the pancetta is cooked. Toss once during roasting. Remove from the oven, drizzle immediately with the balsamic vinegar, and toss again. Taste for seasonings, and serve hot.

Poor Alfalfa, he’s in love again. Porky, from Our Gang*

Yes, ain’t it a shame. Buckwheat, another Gang member

Those of us who are past middle age probably recall the long-running Our Gang movie series.

These days, if you want to see the original movies, which were produced in the 1930s and ‘40s, they’re readily available on DVD and occasionally appear on the Turner Movie Channel.

For me, they still have a wonderful naiveté and charm to them. However, if you do decide to have a look, you’ll have to overlook the racial stereotyping, which is very much in evidence.

That said, my favorite character in the series is Alfalfa, a tall, skinny, white kid about ten years old, with an improbable cowlick sticking straight up from the top of his head.

I relate to Alfalfa because he reminds me so much of myself when I was his age. I too was tall and skinny, was supposed to wear my glasses, but wouldn’t, and as a consequence had to go to the front of my school room to read what was written on the blackboard!

Talk about embarrassing! You’d think that I would simply put the darned lenses on and admit that I needed to wear them, but then, I’ve always been a slow learner.

I also had an awful cowlick and even though I was terribly bashful around girls, I usually had a crush on at least one of them.

Unfortunately, the objects of my affection never seemed to notice that I was even on the same planet, let alone display

any feelings for me.All of which led to a string of what felt like irreparably

broken hearts on my part. Haven’t we all been through them? At the time, they can be absolutely devastating, but seen in the rear view mirror of our lives, how important were they really?

With that in mind, since February is Cupid’s month and with Valentine’s Day as its focal point; I thought it might be a good time to remind ourselves about healthy heart practices and explore additional ideas about how to care for our hearts -- both physically and emotionally.

A ton of words has already been written about the importance of developing and maintaining good physical, sleep and eating habits so I won’t be adding to that advice here. If you want to learn more, you can easily access the information in print and online.

In my case, in addition to trying to follow healthy eating and sleeping regimens (or at least keeping them in mind), I’ve added T’ai Chi exercises to my workout routine. T’ai Chi, while widely practiced in the Far East since ancient times, has now become a popular pursuit in the West as well.

The reason for the increased interest in our part of the world is because T’ai Chi is focused on raising an internal energy within us called Chi. Believe it or not, you can feel that energy forming in the end of your fingers in the simplest of the warm-up exercise.

T’ai practitioners claim that raising Chi will benefit your overall health and bring more peace and joy into your life. They also say that regular practice will improve circulation and add strength, balance, flexibility, concentration and years to your life.

The Heart of the Matterby Phil La Borie

40

Page 41: Sasee - February 2016

And perhaps, even improve your love life!

In any case, T’ai Chi movements are relatively easy to learn and the slow moving routine is suitable for all ages and ability levels.

As an added bonus, the names of the opening moves are about as romantic as it gets -- Opening the Door, Embracing the Moon, Parting the Wild Horse’s Mane.

Poetry in motion for sure! What’s not to like?

In addition, I’ve found that going though the movements on a Grand Strand beach early in the morning, or at sunset, can be a very rewarding and at least a semi-romantic experience. Best of all, it’s absolutely free. (Well, almost free, you might have to pay a small parking fee.) However, not only do you get to enjoy our lovely beaches without the crowds, but you can benefit from the exercises and the fresh air.

I’d suggest that rather than attempting to learn T’ai Chi on your own by following the movements on DVDs (I find that it can get very confusing), you enroll in a local class. There are a number of them in the area. Just go on the ‘Net and look under T’ai Chi Classes in Myrtle Beach.

I’ve also added some Chi Quong movements to my workout. These simple exercises are an easy way to increase flexibility, add to your sense of calmness and improve internal cleansing. They are a great warm-up for your T’ai Chi practice.

Finally, the Tao Te Ching (“The Way”) describes our lives as being passengers in a small boat bobbing on a sea of sorrow. How’s that for a quick summary of the human condition?

According to “The Way,” it is our individual responsibility to take control of our boat so that we can chart our course on this sea of troubles, achieve our individual goals (including mending broken hearts), create and maintain a sense of calm and purpose, and in that way, be in a position to do good for others.

And that’s really the heart of the matter -- to get out of our own personal sense of loss, frustration and complaints with life in general and do good unto others.

I’m not sure that Alfalfa’s love life would have benefited by practicing T’ai Chi and/or Chi Quong (even if he had any idea what they were), but maybe they could have helped.

That said, Spanky MacFarland, the Gang’s ring leader may have had the most useful advice to the lovelorn when he said, “For the love of Pete, just kiss him so I can go to sleep!” **

Now there’s a man after my own heart.

Sasee Kids Valentine’s Day!

The dawn of Valentine’s Day, I awoke alone in our king- sized bed. I was awakened before the alarm went off by a plaintive cry from beyond the wall. I stumbled over pillows tossed casually on the floor in front of our balcony door. I pulled the curtain aside but saw nothing. I still heard the mournful cries that sounded rather frantic and pleading. In my not-totally-awake stupor, I reasoned that it couldn’t be a bird. Yet, I was on the second floor, and the lament sounded too close to be coming from the ground. Squirrels in our attic? Do they weep like this? I walked to the other window in our bedroom which is blocked by an enormous armchair once belonging to my husband’s grandfather. Now that chair is filled with sundry papers, magazines, books and clothes of my husband’s. I pushed the drapes aside. There, on the window sill perched a bird with a tiny head, shivering. As it trembled in the frigid air from an untimely, unusual arctic blast, it emitted the saddest noise imaginable. I’ve never had my face so near a bird before. Only the pane of glass separated us. I wondered how to comfort it. I knew I had bird feeders below outside the living room so this despair didn’t emanate from hunger. It was either from the cold or fear.

As I pitied it all alone there shivering on my window sill, another bird alit next to it. This one also had a drab gray color and a wee bit of a head in comparison to its body. They looked like twins. But this one’s full plumage didn’t shudder, and this one didn’t moan. It began to peck at the vociferous bird’s tiny head. Every time the first one let loose a sad shriek, the second one gave it a quick peck upside the head. I considered tapping on the window to stop this bullying. But then I began to notice that the crier ceased her moaning when the other pecked at her head, and after a while the shivering subsided, and they both sat in silence next to each other on the ledge. I looked away for a second, and they flew off.

As the day wore on, I wondered if the two were sweethearts and which one was the male. I decided the pecks at the head might have been a caring gesture in the ornithological world. I mused as to whether this jabbing was their type of communication. Perhaps one dove was saying: “Stop crying now, honey. It is cold, but you’ll be all right.”

My husband was gone to a meeting for two days, and so I was alone in our big house except for the dogs—my son’s dogs which I keep for the winter because it gets so cold in New York, and usually winter’s mild here in Carolina.

For some reason, I didn’t feel lonely that cold Valentine’s morn waking up alone. I think the birds’ togetherness, attention and comfort for each other was a sign to me. “Cheer up. The day will be fine, and you are not alone” was their message.

When my husband returned that night, I told him about these creatures on the ledge and how it was the first time in my life I’d ever been so near to birds and witnessed their interaction in their time of stress. He listened. I told him I’d not prepared anything for Valentines’ Day and had not even gotten him a card. He asked, “What do you want to do tonight? We can eat out, get take out or cook something.” I told him it didn’t matter what we did. And I meant it. I am just happy not to be alone on Valentine’s Day’s night; so I sent him for a pizza and gave the doggies a bath while he was gone. And when he returned we opened a bottle of good merlot, and all four of us dined on pizza.

To tell the truth, this was as much fun a Valentine’s Day in its own peculiar way as those extroverted, extravagant ones of yesteryear when we were young and thought we had to wine and dine and gift each other with presents, flowers, candy and cards.  Sometimes, the gift of another’s company, true concern and a listening ear is really the only thing a person craves. Birds, like all living creatures, teach us lessons if we pay attention to their conversation, their interactions, their innate wisdom.
