THE SAS STUDENT ADVOCATE St. Aloysius School December 2019 Issue 5 of 2019-20/35 Grades 5-8 Prayer of the Month December 2020 -AR 5th Dear Lord, Last month was about giving thanks. It’s somewhat misleading that Thanksgiving is in November. We need to give thanks all year long. In December, we need to think about the kids who won’t get any presents this year. May EVERYONE have a blessed Christ- mas! Happy birthday, Jesus! Amen Merry Christmas Everyone! -KAC 5th It is that time of year; it is Christmas! This was the time that Christ was born. Remember to go to mass every Sunday. Don’t be excit- ed about getting presents; be excited about getting together with your family. There are so many ways to give without giving a pre- sent. You can just talk to your family. How many other times do you have a good conversation with your family. You can give your- self, your time, your energy, your helpfulness, your best listening, and your love because that is the perfect gift. Have a jolly Christ- mas! HO! HO! HO! Top 12 Surprising Facts You May Not Know About Christmas -JM 8th 1. When was the first Christmas celebrated in America? The first Christmas celebrated on American land was in 1539 in Tallahas- see, Florida. There were no trees or presents or parties to cele- brate; it was just a religious mass. 2. Why do we give gifts on Christmas? The gifts are one of the most important things to look forward to on Christmas, but why do we do it? The reason why we give presents during Christmas is to symbolize the gifts Jesus was given by the three wise men. 3. Prince Albert started the Christmas Tree tradition. During Christmas in 1841, Prince Albert of Germany introduced the tree to his wife, Queen Victoria of England. Ever since then, the popular tradition has spread throughout the entire world. 4. Why do we leave cookies and milk for Santa? The most popular theory is that the Dutch children would leave food and drinks out for St. Nicholas during his feast day, and that tradition has been kept ever since. 5. Christmas was not always celebrated on December 25. Most historians believe Jesus was born in the spring not the winter, and his birthday did not become officially celebrated until the third cen- tury. 6. Celebrating Christmas used to be illegal in America. By the time the Puritans settled Boston, celebrating Christmas was outlawed. Talk about missing the Christmas spirit! From 1659 to 1681, anyone caught making merry would face a fine for celebrat- ing the once-pagan day. After the Revolutionary War, the new Congress held the first session on December 25, 1789. Christmas wasn't proclaimed a federal holiday for nearly another century. 7. How long did it take for Charles Dickens’ to write The Christmas Carol? It took only six weeks for Charles Dickens to write this book. Without fully understanding, Mary and Joseph believed and trusted God’s love and care for all the world! Our Savior is born! We too are called to walk our journey in God’s Love, Faith, and Hope. Our destination is being united with Christ forevermore! According to From Adam's Apple to Xmas: An Essential Vocabulary Guide for the Politically Correct, the word "Christianity" was spelled "Xianity" as far back as 1100. X, or Chi, in Greek is the first letter of "Christ" and served as a symbolic stand-in. In 1551, the holiday was called "Xtemmas" but eventually shortened to "Xmas." So really, Xmas is just as Christian as the longer version. 9. Jingle Bells was originally a Thanksgiving song. Originally we didn’t go dashing through the snow for just Christmas. James Lord Pierpont wrote a song called "One Horse Open Sleigh" and performed it at his church's Thanksgiving concert originally. Then in 1857, the song was re-published under the title it still holds today, and it eventually became one of the most popular Christmas songs. 10. The Candy Cane represents Jesus. When the Candy Cane was invented in Germany, it was made into a ‘J’ for Jesus. The red stripes symbolize his blood. 11. Rudolph was created by an advertising copywriter. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer got his start as an advertising gimmick for Montgomery Ward in 1839. 12. Cooking Dutch -NK 8th Have you ever gone camping before and wanted to cook some-thing cool Or do you want to make an outdoor meal from the comfort of your home Well have you ever heard of Dutch oven cooking Dutch ovens are a popular way to cook with many out-doorsmen You can make almost everything in a Dutch oven from stew to fried chicken But what is a Dutch oven Dutch ovens originated in the early 1700rsquos by Dutch immigrants to America A Dutch oven is a cast iron pot with legs so you can be able to put coals on the oven to heat it up They were the ov-ens of early kitchens Did you know that when Lewis and Clark had to lighten their supplies during their expedition the only man-ufactured items they kept were their guns and the Dutch ovens Today they arenrsquot as popular and they arenrsquot in our kitchens any-more but today they are still used by many outdoor enthusiasts and reenactors So how do you cook in these Well every recipe is different What you normally do is put all the ingredients in put the lid on the oven and place the coals underneath The amount of coal that is needed depends on the temperature you need to cook with With the right ingredients and heat you could cook some-thing that might rival something cooked in a professional kitchen For more tips and information visit the Lodge website which is listed below Animal Testing -DG 6th Hello friends Today I have a serious topic From makeup prod-ucts to hair products to medicine companies are faced with a choice Are we going to test this on a living breathing creature What would you do Letrsquos start with something basic What if a shampoo company wanted to test their new lavender-scent sham-poo on a mouse Is it justifiable to possibly harm a poor innocent mouse Now you might be thinking what else would the company test their products on Well thatrsquos a good question In my opin-ion the developers should be almost certain whatever toiletry or medicine they made in the lab is safe before testing Then they find willing and consenting participants to partake in their experi-ment Animals have no choice when theyre being tested on What if it dies simply because a trial and error goes wrong So itrsquos my argument to make sure you use safe ingredients in the first place But letrsquos say you wish to go very experimental- what do you do Test on a dummy Put a real hair wig on it maybe Itrsquos a con-troversial topic but deserves some consideration What do you think Whatever yoursquore opinion is perhaps you can help make a difference Family Christmas Traditions -SC 7th Many families have a unique family tradition during Christmas time that they repeat every year For instance they always attend the 4 pm Christmas Eve Mass What family traditions do you have Are they interesting or unique Many families have their own unique traditions and many are passed on from past family members Some families eat cookies sit in a circle and reminisce about each other or go on vacation Many families eat a fancy Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve when all the extended family can be together and then go home to sleep Upon waking up they celebrate by opening presents and see if Santa came during the night Why not start a new tradition if yoursquod like to add some fun Come up with a plan get everyone in the family to participate and test it out One year I had everyone write down an act of kindness on a card which (s)he could do for any family member for $0 Then each person in my family drew one card from the stackhellip Guess what happened

Facts About Christmas You May Not Know -KH 6th 1) Until 1836 Christmas was illegal in the United States Alabama became the first state to declare Christmas a legal holiday 2) Norwegians pay only 50 of their usual tax in November so everyone has more money for Christmas 3) In Japan many people eat KFC on Christmas Eve 4) New Zealand bans all television advertising on Christmas Day 5) The British and Irish wear paper crowns while they eat Christ-mas dinner The crowns are stored in a tube called a Christmas cracker 6) Approximately 30-35 million real Christmas trees are cut down and sold each season in the United States Each year approxi-mately 200 Christmas trees catch fire in the United States Googlecom St Nicholas -JS 8th St Nicholas aka Santa Claus is the patron saint of sailors mer-chants archers and children His full name is Nicholas of Bari and he was the bishop of the Greek city Myra His reputation was made by secretly giving gifts in the night to children After his par-ents died St Nicholas distributed their wealth to the poor The most famous story about St Nicholas tells how the custom of hanging up stockings to put presents in first started It goes like this there was a poor man who had three daughters The man was so poor that he did not have enough money for a dowry so his daughters couldnt get married (A dowry is a sum of money paid to the bridegroom by the bridersquos parents on the wedding day This still happens in some countries even today) One night Nich-olas secretly dropped a bag of gold down the manrsquos chimney and into the house This meant that the oldest daughter was then able to be married The bag fell into a stocking that had been hung by the fire to dry This is where we got the tradition of hanging stock-ings for Santa to fill St Nicholas repeated later with the second daughter Finally determined to discover the person who had giv-en him the money the father secretly hid by the fire every evening until he caught Nicholas dropping in a bag of gold St Nicholas begged the man not to tell anyone what he had done because he did not want to bring attention to himself However soon the news got out and when anyone received a secret gift it was thought that maybe it was from St Nicholas Because of his kindness Nicholas was made a Saint httpswwwwhychristmascomcustomsfatherchristmasshtmlman httpswwwstnicholascenterorgwho-is-st-nicholasorigin-of-santa
