Electronic media degree left out in TRB recruitmentprocessBy Our Staff Reporter

Postgraduates in electronic media have complained that their subject was left out in the online application form forassistant professors’ recruitment by the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB). MSc (Visual Communication), a coursesimilar to electronic media, has been included.

TRB notified 2,331vacancies in government arts and science colleges and commenced online application this month. There are 21 vacancies in visual communications and 11 in journalism and mass communication. “Madras Universityhas accepted MSc electronic media as qualification to teach visual communication. The UGC has allowed electronicmedia students to clear National Eligibility Test in mass communication and journalism. But, I could not apply forthe assistant professor’s post notified by TRB,” said a candidate working in a city college for more than 10 years.

Another candidate said, “Though Anna University has been offering the course from 2002, the department of mediasciences is yet to obtain the equivalent certificate. This will affect our chances in getting the job. Authorities saycertification will take months.”

“We will give a representation to the government asking for equivalence to be given for a PG in electronic media witha PG degree in visual communication,” said Prof. G. Ravindran (Head, Department of journalism and communication,Madras University). “The TRB inadvertently left out electronic media from the application form. It should have beengiven along with visual communication,” said Prof. I. Arul Aram (Department of media sciences, Anna University).

The board is open to include eligible candidates. “We have included equivalence orders in the revised notification. Sofar, we have not received any representation in this regard,” an official said.

By Our Staff ReporterThe inauguration of the pe-

destrian plaza in Pondy Ba-zaar, T. Nagar by Chief Minis-ter Edappadi K. Palaniswamyhas been delayed, say Corpo-ration officials. The plaza wasto be thrown open before theend of October and officials arewaiting for the availability ofdates from the Chief Minister’soffice.

The demise of the CM’s fa-ther-in-law and the statemachinery’s focus on the res-cue of 2-year-old Sujith Wilsonwho died after falling into anabandoned borewell in Trichydistrict, have caused the delay, officials said.

The project under the SmartCity Mission began in the middle

of 2018 at a cost of more thanRs. 33 crores.

The project is aimed at pro-moting non-motorised trans-port. Similar projects are to beundertaken in Velachery,Anna Nagar and Tondiarpet, according to Corporation offi-cials.

The1.4 km-long plaza will bea highlight once inaugurated, despite criticism from variousquarters questioning the ne-cessity for such a wide foot-path shrinking the carriage-way.

“For now, the traffic is two-way and hence there have beencomplaints from commuters. After official inauguration, thetraffic will be made one-way.

Discussions are on with po-

lice and owners of commercialestablishments to arrive at acommon ground,” a senior Cor-poration official said.

Post inauguration, the Cor-poration has planned culturalactivities on the plaza to at-tract more members of thepublic.

Rate of interest not reduced oneducational loans

Sir, Thanks to the various steps andannouncements by the Finance Ministry andReserve Bank of India, the rate of interest onvarious loans like housing loan, vehicle loanand other consumer loans has come down.

But there has been no announcement withregard to reduction in the interest rate oneducational loans.

Educational loans are in the nature of long-term loans and will have a high financial burdeneven if the rate of interest is more by 0.5%.

Presently housing loans and vehicle loansare cheaper than educational loans.

But as a nation building activity, educationplays a major role and that too education for girlchildren. It is not clearly known if the linking ofRepo rates with the lending rates has beenimplemented for all loans, as I find that the rateof interest on educational loans (both in Indiaand abroad) has remained the same.

In most of the cases, the rate of interest oneducational loans is higher than that on housingand/or vehicle loans, which I find quite strangefor a nation like ours when our PM talks all thetime about building a stronger and better India.

May I request the RBI and the FinanceMinistry to issue necessary guidelines toregulate/reduce the interest rates at least by2% both for education in India and abroad? V.R. Sridhar, Swati Kanaka Flats,23/11,Veerasami Street,West Mambalam.

Sir, It is a common feature in MTC busterminuses that more than one bus plying ona particular route are parked at any giventime.

Picture shows two 17D buses on K. K. Nagarto Broadway route parked at K. K. Nagarterminus.

As the commuters do not know which bus willbe operated first, they just get into one of themhoping that it may start first.

But all of a sudden, the driver and conductorappear from nowhere and start the other bus.As a result, the commuters are forced to alightin a hurry to board the other bus to get seats.

It creates a big hassle and is also risky forwomen and senior citizens as they could getinjured during the process.

To avoid this, I suggest that a signboard beplaced in front of the buses to indicate the timeof departure of each bus for the convenience ofthe commuters. A. Jainulabdeen, 51,85th Street, Ashok Nagar, Ph: 94444 19083

Regulations needed to prevent petsfrom dirtying public places

Sir, Unlike in many other countries, there isno regulation in India on pets defecating in theopen on pavements, roads and in other publicplaces like parks.

In many countries like USA, pet ownershave no carry a poop scoop and remove theexcreta and dispose it properly.

In India, it is a common sight to see pavementslittered with pet excreta which is a majorhealth hazard. At times, even front yards oftemples are not spared.

While the irresponsible acts reveal not justthe lack of civic sense, it is a major cause formosquito infestation and infectious diseases.

I appeal to the authorities concerned toimplement regulations in this regard. N.Vijayaraghavan, 59/1, Muthalamman KoilStreet, West Mambalam, Ph: 99626 64766

This refers to the advertisement ofIndian Oil Corporation Ltd.

Sir It has asked its consumers to help thecompany by asking for pre-delivery checks ofLPG cylinders. It asks them to ensure that thecylinder seal is intact, the cylinder is weighedbefore installation, check for the ‘O’ ring orother leakage using the LPG leakage detector, and insists that the cylinder is installed by thedelivery staff. While the oil company hasplayed its part well, who will ensure that theconsumer gets a fair deal?

No delivery boy brings with him the weighingscale or the leakage detector, nor does he havethe patience to check for leakage.

Equally, so are the consumers as many areignorant of the procedures.

Instead of issuing advisory to the consumers, the oil marketing companies must ask theirdistributors to follow the instructions strictly.V. S. Jayaraman, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Less waste, but no let-up forconservancy workers

The city Corporation collected a total of 22.58 tonnes of cracker wasteon Oct, 26 and 27 across all 15 zones, of which the day of Deepavali (Oct.27) accounted for 21.9 tonnes. Last year, the Corporation collected a totalof 64.5 tonnes over three days. In 2017, it collected around 80 tonnes ofcracker waste at the end of festivities. Though there was less waste, the19,585 sanitary workers deployed on rotation basis had their task cut out.

Srinivasan, a sanitary worker in Old Washermenpet, normally starts at8 a.m to clean streets and gets it done by 10 a.m. However, on Oct. 28 hestarted at 5 a.m and went on till 1 pm. “I made at least 20 trips from thestreets back to the resource recovery center (where the collected wasteis dumped) covering about 15 km,” said Srinivasan, who pulls his heavytricycle with punctured tyres. Conforming to TNPCB guidelines, thecracker waste is sent to the hazardous waste disposal facility nearGummidipoondi. Many sanitary workers in Mambalam, T. Nagar, Parrysand Tondiarpet were seen working without safety gear.

A sanitary worker from Neelankarai said, “I worked till 1.30 p.m on Oct.28. When my husband and children were praying at home in the morning,I was here collecting waste.” Rain on Oct. 27 night made matters worse. The waste went into drains and manholes too.” “The silver chemicalpollutants take a hard scrub to leave our body. The low quality polythenegloves tear and with the scrub broom, it’s hard to push the wet paper wasteaside,” said Shantha G, a contract worker.
