Saariselkä is traditionally a popular destination for

ruska trips. Come alone, with friend or larger group

and dive into the colourful array of the autumnal fell

landscape. Enjoy clear, bright days in nature on well

marked trails to return as the evening sets in to relax

and enjoy more recreation with fun evening activity.

The long and sensually stimulating autumnal ruska

period is the best time to conquer Saariselkä on a hike

or bike, or perhaps by enhancing performance with

some Nordic walking. In the Urho Kekkonen National

Park, the hiker will not only be able to witness

untouched nature, but also remains of the ancient

and still currently characteristic reindeer husbandry

and hunting culture of the region, with deer pit traps,

snow and ice, the chair – made of ice, the illuminated night

table – made of ice, the vase – made of ice. You think you

will freeze? Wrong. The outside temperature is -30°C, but

inside it’s only -5°C. The difference gives you a real feeling

of warmth. Your bed is covered with polystyrene and a

woollen cover. Get undressed quickly (you’ve probably never

done it so fast), put on warm woollen socks and a woolly

hat and jump into your thick sleeping bag. Within a few

moments you feel comfortably warm. No noise around you,

no television, no radio. What’s more, outside in the Arctic

sky are the impressive, mystic Northern Lights. - “hyvää

yötä” - good night. Start the next morning with a vitalizing

breakfast – ready for new adventures. Less adventurous can

get the same experience comfortably in heated glass igloos.

Driving on IceGreetings, briefing, meeting the instructors – and off we go!

First exercise: acceleration on ice. No problem. No problem?

The wheels of your car spin like the mad, but otherwise

nothing happens. Putting your foot down does not always

guarantee the best start! After that, attempts at braking

and avoiding obstacles on the ice are performed. So easy

when the instructor shows you how. Now it’s your turn –

bang, parts of the foam rubber wall fly through the air. But

a few more attempts, and you also manage to successfully

complete this exercise. Now is time for the race against

the clock on an icy circular track. Your colleague did it in

only 22.1 seconds! Naturally, you are better than him – if

only the spikes were slightly longer and sharper. It’s a

good thing there are soft snow walls everywhere! Or what

about an introduction to rally driving? With a real rally car

(with long rally spikes!)? And with one of the many famous

Finnish high-class rally drivers as your instructor? Try it -

it’s fun, it’s adventure, it’s excitement!

Getting to Saariselkä!Saariselkä is located in precisely the right location on the globe: far enough away from everything, plenty of untouched nature to explore, yet close enough so that arranging a trip is easy. You can come by plane, car, bus or train. You can take the train all the way to Rovaniemi, from which you can continue by bus to Saariselkä. Flights land at Ivalo Airport, from which it is only a half-hour journey to your destination by airport bus. The flight time to Helsinki takes around 1½ hours.
