Sardis…church  of  the  living  dead…

• Sardis  was  the  most  fertile,  most  pagan,  and  at  one  time  thought  to  be  unconquerable  

• Had  the  Christians  there  been  conquered?  • Seven  stars  (Rev  1:20)    • Seven  spirits  (Is  11:2)    

 Verses  1-­‐3  The  walking  dead  or  a  church  that  is  alive?  

o A  reputation  for  being  alive  o 550  B.C.  King  Croesus  was  conquered    o There  was  a  strong  Jewish  and  Christian  presence

o Built  in  the  gymnasium/bathhouse    o No  Jewish  opposition  for  the  Christians  

 • Sardis  was  conquered  in  the  night…like  a  thief  would  do  

o  (Luke  12:35-­‐40,  I  Thessalonians  5:1-­‐9,  2  Peter  3:8-­‐13)    Verses  4,5    Zombie  attire  or  the  clothing  of  the  Christian?  

o Garment  industry    was  there    o White  garments  =7  times  in  Revelation  (wedding  garments)  

 Verse  6…The  walking  dead  have  no  ears      Were  the  Christians  trying  to  be  salt  and  light  or  were  they  so  accustomed  to  the  culture  they  didn’t  notice  the  difference?      

It’s  time  to  wake  up  and  strengthen  that  which  is  dying!
