Saratov goes back for hundreds years. The town was founded in 1590 as a fortress to protect the trade route along the Volga River from nomadic raiders. It was rather small.

In 1670 Stepan Razin, a popular hero of numerous folk songs and legends, captured Saratov.

SaratovIn August of 1774 Saratov was captured by Yemelyan Pugachov, a leader of Cossack and peasant rebellion in Russia .

SaratovIn the 19th century Saratov became a major commercial centre, especially after the railway to Moscow was built in the 1870s.

The people of our city are proud of the wonderful embankment named after Cosmonauts. From it you can see a very beautiful and long bridge across the Volga, one of the longest in Europe (2.8 km).
