TABLE OF CONTENTS

The Squadron building is undergoing renovation which will render both large classrooms and the restrooms temporarily unusable. All of our cours-es and seminars through April will be held at the Sahib Shrine, 600 Beneva Rd., Sarasota (just north of Fruitville on the east side of the road.) The Shrine is open to the public and has a restau-rant and lounge. The classrooms are located on the 3rd floor (elevator available) and 1st floor in a sec-tioned off part of their restaurant seating area. Both rooms have easy access to restrooms. All courses on single class nights will be held in the larger 3rd floor room, as will ABC. All classes are scheduled for 7-9 PM (the March Saturday classes for ABC are 9-1).

URGENT BOATERS ANNOUNCEMENT!

Sperry has just released Darth Vader-inspired boat shoes for the "Star Wars" fanatic yachtsman. The new footwear comes just in time for the eighth episode of the "Star Wars" saga, "The Last Jedi" . The boat shoe has a transparent, red-colored rubber sole with Darth Vader's mask shining through it. Sperry de-scribes the construction through a humorous pun. "Beneath it all lies a print of his mask for a sole as dark as his."

I am very excited to be your Commander this year. In a few months we will have an updated building in which to hold our classes and events. I am sure you are as ea-ger as I am to see the changes. While the renovation is going on we will be holding our classes at the Sahib Shrine building at 600 Beneva Road, Sarasota. This is a very nice temporary location for our classes. We will continue to hold events outside of our HQ building until it is completed.

On 1/7/2018 my Change of Watch ceremony was held at Marina Jack. Then we all boarded the Marina Jack II for a special luncheon and tour around our beautiful Sarasota Bay. Over 80 United States Power Squadron members were present, representing USPS Squadrons from Sarasota, Manatee, San Carlos Bay, St Petersburg, Peace River, Naples, Venice, Ft Myers, and Clear-water, as well as representation from District 22 and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. P/C Bill Bose, N did an outstanding job as MC and SPSS's own, District 22 Commander Sue Lomastro, AP presided over the ceremony. I wish to thank my Change of Watch Committee; Sandy Boos, Joan Zacchini, D/C Sue Lomastro, AP, P/C Julie Clark, AP, Mary Messenger and P/Lt/C Sylvia Wedge, P. I wish to thank Frank Ginty for being the photographer and my flag officer F/Lt Ed Seagraves, AP who procured and handed out the flags during the ceremony. Last but not least I wish to thank P/C Bill Boos, N for hosting the ceremony and making sure we all were able to board the Marina Jack II on time. I am looking forward to working with the 2018 Bridge: Lt/C Rick Laprad, AP, Lt/C Chris Messenger, AP, P/D/C Barry Rush, SN, Lt/C Barbara Wolfe, P, P/Lt/C Del Pemberton, JN, 1st/Lt Roxanne Fox and 1st/Lt Ray Morrissey. From the Middle of the Bridge Happy New Year. May you all have a Happy and Healthy 2018. It has truly been a pleas-ure to serve as the Administrative Officer In 2017. I am looking forward to taking over the responsibility of Executive Officer in 2018 and working with our new Commander and

Bridge. So far, we have most of our XO commit-tees in good shape, but still have a couple of key roles which need to be filled. We need someone who is interested in Public Relations to fill the Chair position on the Public Relations committee as well as a lead for the Boat Show Committee. Please contact me if you can help out in either of these key positions. ( [email protected] ) This year we are fortunate in that the 2018 vessel safety check decals were mailed early and are being distributed to the VSC inspectors. The 2018 Inspection Calendar is being established. Please start out 2018 on a safety note by sched-uling a VSC for your boat! It can be done by con-tacting P/C Richard Winston ( [email protected] ) or by going to the SPSS website at https://sarasota-boating.org/civic-programs/ and scrolling down to Schedule Your Free Vessel Safety Check Today!. ....One click and you are good to go. Just fill out the form and you will be contacted! Cooperative Charting is alive and well and is starting off 2018 with a revitalized team approach to inspect our waterways. Four captains and the associated crew have been identified, with three of the four captains being new to the Coop Chart-ing team. In addition, the Coop Charting team roster will be bolstered with a list of alternates which will be made up of new members who ex-pressed an interest in Coop Charting. Our goal will be to invite one new crew member out on each trip. If you are interested in joining this team, please contact Jose Garnham at [email protected]. Meetings are being set up to train the teams on what to do on the water and how to use the new system to report findings

Shopping at Amazon you can automatically donate 0.5% of the purchase price of nearly everything you buy to the Squadron. It’s very simple. Rather than going to Amazon.com go to AmazonSmile.com. It’s really the same website, but when you buy through AmazonSmile you are automatically making a charitable donation.

Once you’re on the AmazonSmile page you’ll see the word Supporting in the upper left. It is there that you have to enter our name. Since nearly a million charities participate it’s important that you choose us. Therefore, enter united states power squadron sarasota. Adding Sarasota is very important, because many, many, many other Squadrons already participate. We will pop up and all you have to do is hit the Select button and from then on whenever you go to AmazonSmile and purchase something, we get a little something too! The important thing to remember going forward is to shop through the AmazonSmile.com website and not just Amazon.

From The Editor

According to the Cambridge Dic-tionary of American English, “boating” is defined as “the activity of traveling in a boat, esp. as a hob-by or for pleasure:” Sarasota Bay is a popular boating and fishing area for those living in Sarasota County. No surprise, being a part of Sarasota Power & Sail Squadron supports the idea and practice of safe boating. So, in weather a bit warmer than 42 degrees, when was the last time you were on the wa-ter? Many of our members no longer have boats of their own. Some have joined Freedom Boat Club or similar organizations. But many simply no longer have ready access to our beautiful local waters. We need to do more to get our membership out on the water, whether for an afternoon cruise, a cruise to eat, a raft up or other events. Do you have an idea for an on-the-water event? A “Floating” crap game perhaps? Send your ideas to our AO Lt/C Christopher Messen-ger AP, [email protected] and copy the South Wind, [email protected].

LOOKING FOR THE SPSS CORNERSTONE!

Secretary Are you interested in being the lynchpin of your Squadron? We are seeking the "Go to per-son", your "Commanders right arm”, and keeper of all things important. Can you send emails, write letters of thanks, take minutes and do it with a smile? Have your own HQ Desk. Sit in Meetings in a power position! Be the keeper of the Holy Corporate Seal. Did you know all Power Squadrons must have three essential officers? They are your Com-mander, your Squadron Educational Officer and the LYNCHPIN of every squadron, your Squadron Secretary. It is a worthwhile experience and a vital part of the squadron. Interest-

ed? Want to learn more? Please contact P/C William Boos N, [email protected]. “Harry Potter” Computer Wizard Sought Have you been minding your 1’s and 0’s all your life? Took all those techie courses and wondering what to do with your IT Professional skills? Are you ready to demand the best of all the Squadron devices? Willing to work odd hours for no pay and put Squadron forever in your debt? Then become the IT GO TO Member. Please contact Cdr. Richard Winston, SN at [email protected]. The Boaters Guide to Sarasota Merit Mark Opportunity – Commander needs a volunteer to work on reprinting The Boaters Guide to Sara-sota. This is a very important publication for us. Copies of the brochure which feature our programs and what we do are displayed in the Tax Department, marina’s and local restaurants. The brochure is given out when someone has a Vessel Safety Check and our Luncheon Speakers Committee uses them. If you are interested in helping to work on reprinting this valuable brochure, please contact: [email protected].

Yankeetown, Florida: Four family members were rescued 15 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico after a con-cerned family member called the U.S. Coast Guard when the quartet of boaters did not return on time. Their 18-foot boat had broken down, and the four, who ranged between 40 and 71 years of age, were suffering from hypothermia. Warm clothes stowed in a vacuum bag, or lidded bucket, can be used to stave off hypothermia, and filing a float plan might have made rescue speedier. Consider filing a float plan via the U.S. Coast Guard app, just one of many great reasons to download this helpful tool.

Crazy Contributions: The South Wind will accept donations to the Squadron General Fund in amounts of $10 or more with a dedication in your own words. Anything goes, but keep it clean folks. It may be reviewed by the Chaplain.

To Bud Lomastro - How do you describe D/Lt Bud Lomastro, S? Finding this answer has been my secret mission. When I asked any of our members I found they all added a few new thoughts. Bud is personable. He is the first to say hello to a new member, the first to make you feel welcome, and the first smile you spot in the room. Bud is committed. He has chaired the Membership Committee for more years than remembered. Ask Bud how to maneuver through all the enroll-ment tools or USPS benefits. He has the answers. Bud is dedicated. Check out any ABC class. Bud is the one who makes sure there will be members to greet the new ABC class, show them how to do knots and make sure all their questions are answered. Bud is the one who makes sure the students get their training at MarineMax – he checks on the MarineMax Captain, the boat and our instructors. He makes sure each student knows where they are going and when to be there. Bud is the one who creates the relationship with the student which often results in a new member. Bud is dog-gedly determined; determined to make you feel welcome, wearing a wide grin, a squadron shirt and offering a solid handshake. And Bud is enthusiastic. His enthusiasm is contagious. With all of that he remains the steadfast support to our District Commander Susan. The squadron is greater, and achieves more thanks to Bud's unshakable, purpose-ful commitment to our squadron. Thanks Bud Lomastro. P/Lt/C Sylvia Wedge P

Potential 2018 Boat Safety Events

SPSS’s Boat Safety Committee is looking at conducting safety related events in the February timeframe and re-quest your feedback so we can determine your level of in-terest. The two events under consideration are: - CPR, AED, and basic first aid course

- hands on interactive demonstration of proper use of a fire extinguisher

We typically offer these important safety instructional courses every 2 years, and will do again if we have sufficient interest. If you are inter-ested in attending either of these events, please send an Email to [email protected] and indicate which event(s) you would be interested in attending.

PAN PAN

Wind is the bane of most boating anglers, especially those with craft under 30 feet in length. Getting caught in howling winds far from shore can threaten the safety of your crew and result in a long, slow, sloppy ride back to port. Wind forecasts help in avoiding the worst winds, and the more localized and detailed the forecast, the better. That’s where FishWeather excels. This mobile app offers access to -Fish--Weather’s exclusive weather station network and crowdsourcing, plus 50,000 other weather stations around the world. FishWeather covers lakes and rivers, as well as ocean and bay waters. The basic app is free, but you can also pony up for premium service levels. While FishWeather lists current winds (speed, direction and gusts) and waves (height, direction and frequency) in real time, it is the short-term forecasts for specific locales that I really like. These proprietary hour-by-hour forecast models have proven very accurate in terms of wind speed and direction, giving me the guidance to pack it in (if the forecast calls for strong winds) or the confidence to fish longer (if the forecast is for mild winds). FishWeather gives you the ability to pan around its map of weather stations to compare forecasts from area to area that give you an idea of localized winds. The more you zoom in, the more weather stations appear. Download it at the App Store for iOS devices or Google Play for Android devices.
