LIVELY MIDDLE SCHOOL HUMANITIES AND LAW MAGNET

FOR GLOBAL STUDIES

Dear Prospective Applicant: Thank you for your interest in the Lively Magnet Program. The Lively Magnet Program is an advanced academic program with limited enrollment. Our program, consisting of over five hundred magnet students from all around the Austin area, is part of a 133 year old tradition. Authorized by Austin Independent School District's school board in 2001, Lively's Humanities and Law Magnet for Global Studies was one of Austin's best kept secrets; it’s not so secret anymore! Enrollment includes over 50% identified Gifted and Talented students. We identify sixth grade students and seventh grade students for the Duke Talent Search Program. Lively's Magnet Program offers personalization for students and a variety of elective choices that correspond with the specialties of the program. The three distinctive strands in law, humanities, and global studies form the basis for our electives in areas for which Lively is well-known. Magnet students enroll in language arts, social studies, introduction to law, and introduction to humanities courses designed for Magnet students only. These courses are engaging, literacy rich, and move at an accelerated pace. Concepts in English Language Arts and social studies are intertwined to support students in making deep connections about the world around them. Our focus on social justice and civics education is part of what makes our program meaningful and unique. Magnet electives, while populated primarily by magnet students, are open to all Falcons. Lively Magnet students also enjoy challenging math and science classes including Medical Detectives, Forensic Science, High School level Health, Algebra I and Geometry. Magnet students are asked to participate in at least 10 hours of service to their communities per year. Our 8th grade students participate in our unique Capstone Project, which is a problem-based learning project where students choose their topic.These activities build a sense of civic responsibility, engage students in the Lively community, and support students in building strong resumes. Lively offers a variety of after school clubs where students have the opportunity to make friends from all walks of life. Free late buses depart from Lively at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday so that Magnet students can participate in all after school activities. AISD provides bus transportation for any student accepted to Lively Magnet who lives within AISD boundaries. What makes Lively special? Parents say that Lively provides a comfortable environment where students are free to explore their strengths and discover more about who they are and in what they believe. The Application Checklist will help you organize your materials. These application materials will allow us to assess your qualifications and predict your potential success in our program. All information must be completed, signed and returned by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 7th, 2020. We encourage current AISD students to apply online through the AISD Parent Cloud. Families using the AISD Parent Cloud will have student grades and STAAR scores pulled by the district. Families applying from out of AISD or who do not use the Parent Cloud to apply will need to use the paper application and provide grades and STAAR scores. Please note that all families must show proof of residence in AISD boundaries within 45 days of the application deadline. Gracias por su interés en el programa Avanzado de Lively. El programa Magnet es un programa académicamente avanzado con una matrícula limitada. Nuestro programa, que consiste de más de quinientos estudiantes de toda el área de Austin, es parte de la tradición de Lively por 133 años. Autorizado por la Mesa Directiva de AISD en el 2001, el programa avanzado de Humanidades y Leyes para Estudios globales en Lively es uno de los secretos mejor guardados de Austin; aunque ya no es tan secreto! Required Essay & Admission Test Session

family. Students must attend admissions testing which is half of their application score. If you cannot

attend any of the testing sessions, you may contact the Magnet Office at 512-841-4916 for testing by

appointment. Lively honors all testing accomodations upon provided documentation. If requesting

accommodations, please notify the magnet office regarding which testing session you choose to attend and

submit all testing accomodations at least one week in advance. All testing must be concluded by February 7th,

2020.

Examen de Admisión

REQUEST TO SHADOW AT LIVELY (OPTIONAL REQUEST)

Students applying to Lively’s Magnet Program may accompany (shadow) a Magnet student and attend their classes for a full day

between January 8 and January 24, 2020. The Magnet office will email or call you to confirm receipt of your request and confirm the

date of visitation. Slots are given to students on a first come, first served basis. On your confirmed shadow date, please arrive by 8:00

a.m. Report to the cafeteria where your student will meet their shadow host. Students may bring a lunch or receive a free lunch in the

cafeteria. The Lively Cafeteria is located at the front of our school on Mary Street.

Students will be paired with a Falcon student host for the day. The host will take the student to observe the unique classes that only

Lively has to offer. All guest students will be picked up in the cafeteria at the end of their shadowing session. Please make sure your

child is picked up on time in the Lively Cafeteria at 3:34 p.m.

The student MUST turn in the following by 4:00 p.m. DECEMBER 13, 2019 in order to shadow:

Students must turn in page 6 of the application packet signed by parent and student or have applied on-line.

Students must turn in page 7 (this form) with three dates circled.

Students must turn in STAAR or other testing scores or have applied on-line.

Students must inform their current school of their plans to shadow at Lively prior to the day of shadowing. Lively will provide students

with a letter verifying their day spent at Lively, which students will need to submit to their current school upon their return for

attendance purposes.

Because Lively is committed to providing the best possible shadowing experience for every student, we must limit the number of

students who shadow on any particular day. Therefore, students may or may not receive their first choice of dates. Also, due to the high

demand for this opportunity, students who need to cancel or forget to come on their appointed day may not be given the chance to

reschedule. Finally, Lively does not conduct admissions testing during shadowing.

Student’s STAAR or other nationally-normed achievement tests will be assessed using a standardized

4. Admission Test

Students will take a 40-minute admission test to assess nonverbal ability and complete a 30-minute essay

during a testing session administered by professional school staff members. The writing task counts as the
