Enable your SAP Ecosystem for Brilliant BasicsEnd2End Approach
What is meant by Brilliant Basics?
The concept of Brilliant Basics factors in and respects old and new world and consequently the gap in innovation speed.
Whatever area that needs to stay in the traditional world should:
• Be based on processes as robust as possible,
• with a minimum of fault tolerance,
• in the most cost-effective way and
• designed to consume as less possible human interaction
• SAP will always carry a reasonable part of a Companies traditional ERP Services
• Various parts will not be able to keep up with the “todays” Innovation pace, however…
• … it will stay as the ERP-Backbone of a Company
SAP is offering a number of new Products to close this gap, however new projects can be significantly costly and very complex
Benefits of running SAP on AWSEnd2End Approach
Improved Operational Reliability
Disaster Recovery solved without incurring the
expense of a second physical backup site
Reduced lag between procurement and
consumption of computing power (from months
to minutes…)
Possibilities of Low-Cost data Storage for Archiving (e.g.
Glacier)
Improved security attributes (wide range of tools for
network, server security and data encryption)
Fast deployment possibilities (fast global deployments,
sandboxing within minutes)
Significant financial savings by ‘switching off’ instances (ad hoc & plan based) based on “pay for what you use” –ideal for systems that do not have to run 24/7
Getting ‘infrastructure as a code’ allows our customer to
focus own recourceson differentiating
activities
Enabling easy way to come to wide range of cost
effective but comprehensive analytic tools –(e.g. Hadoop)
Getting more computing power within hours once
needed (ad hoc, or planned scale up/down plan for
production)
Enjoying 16-22% less total cost of ownership than on
premise

Questions?
Agenda
Our Phased Approach for SAP Migration into AWSEnd2End Approach
Internal Assessment: Target is to assess feasibility related to companies compliance and security guidelines
Financial Impact Analysis: Is there a substantial financial contribution that justifies a migration?
Technical Evidence: POC aims to cover maximum of all technically required steps of a real migration
After successfully passing all earlier stages: Migration project will be initiated
Step 1: Compliance and Security AssessmentEnd2End Approach
AWS Shared Responsibility Model: When evaluating the security of a cloud solution, it is important to understand and distinguish between:
A Compliance and Security Assessment should be done at the very beginning of a project idea.
Various Stakeholders need to have awareness: Governance, Security Department, even LabourUnion (Betriebsrat) might be involved
Security of the CloudSecurity measures that the cloud service provider (AWS) implements and operates
Topics to be discussed
• Data Protection
• Protection of Intellectual Property
Security in the Cloud
Security measures that the customer implements and operates, related to the security of customer content and applications that make use of AWS services

The AWS virtual infrastructure has been designed to provide optimum availability while ensuring complete customer privacy and segregation.
Security measures include
• Secure access & Built-in firewalls
• Unique users & Multi-factor authentication
• Private Subnets & Encrypted data storage
• Dedicated connection option
• Perfect Forward Secrecy
• Security logs
• Asset identification and configuration
• Centralized key management
• Isolated GovCloud
• Cloud HSM
• Trusted Advisor

Security Within the Cloud is in the responsibility of the customer
• Should be based on customers Security Measures
• Customer retains control of what security is choosen to be implemented
• Target is to protect customers own content, platform, applications, systems and networks
• This should not be different to what would be done for applications in an on-site datacenter
Step 2: Business CaseEnd2End Approach
Costs on AWS varies particularly based on data transfers
Not specifically for SAP licenses, but DB-License model is
important
Comparison: Design in AWS and On-PremiseWide range of data storage possibilities in AWS vs. On Prem.
Cost of internal resources assigned to the project
Cost of external consultancy required for the project
.
For our customers we offer preparation of Business Case Analysis covering all important key areasAWS tends to decrease price of their services https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/category/price-reduction/
Step 3: Initiate a “Proof-of-Concept” - ProjectEnd2End Approach
The Proof-of-Concept is very important to prepare your migration. Nothing is more valuable than building your own experience.
A Cloudification POC helps to increase maturity level of understanding what key drivers have an impact on service.
A POC increases the KnowHow of internal key resources – change in working will start
The POC itself has visibility impact – the effort that was spend can be reused
Experience teaches only the teachable.
• Non-Productive Systems
• Test System or UAT System
• Development Stream (on 5/7 system landscape)
• Small (less Data) environments
• Small (less User) environments
• BW Systems
Step 4: Migration – From Datacenter to AWSEnd2End Approach
Create Migration Plan and share with SAP (certified resource for Cloudification have to
create it and be contact person for SAP!)
Use Standard Tools/Methods to execute the migration
(Software Provisioning Manager)
SAP tool for variety of SAP system provisioning tasks• System installation/uninstallation• System copy/migration• System renaming• Dual-stack splitUsed for SAP migration to AWS• Homogeneous system copy• Heterogeneous system copy
• Easily import/export virtual machine images between existing environment and Amazon EC2 instances
• Recommended for small and virtualized SAP systems
• VM Import/Export tools include AWS CLI, Amazon EC2 API, and other developer tools
Reserve enough resources for execution of proper testing
SAP Standard System CopyEnd2End Approach
General steps
• Create an export of the source system by using SAPinst
• Copy the export and DB backup to Amazon EBS or Amazon S3
• Network copy: usually for less than 1TB data, including AWS Direct Connect, AWS Storage Gateway
• Amazon Import/Export Snowball: for 1TB data or more
• Install the new target system on Amazon EC2 by using SAPinst to import the source system export files
SAP homogeneous system copy• Without OS/DB change for
target system
SAP heterogeneous system copy• With OS/DB change for target
system
• Known as OS/DB migration
• Project plan reviewed and approved by SAP
SLES/ Oracle SLES/ Oracle AIX/ Oracle SLES/ Oracle
AWS VM Import/ExportEnd2End Approach
• Used for virtualized SAP servers
• VM image is imported and converted into an Amazon EC2 AMI which is used to run an Amazon EC2 instance
VM Image AMI EC2• SAP Note 1656099 - SAP Applications on
AWS: Supported DB/OS and AWS EC2 products.
• SAP Note 1656250 - SAP on AWS: Support prerequisites
• 2358420 - Oracle Database Support for Amazon Web Services EC2
• SAP on AWS Whitepapers
• https://aws.amazon.com/sap/whitepapers/
Challenges and SolutionsEnd2End Approach
• AWS Direct Connect
• Long time transfer of large files
• AWS Import/Export Snowball
• Not available in some regions, e.g. Singapore, Tokyo
• 50TB models are only available in USA regions
• The service does not cover all states in USA; cross-region shipping is not possible
• Solution:
• Improve the Internet connection bandwidth
• Consider the right option for your case
Data Transfer To AWS
• It is not supported to run a SAP Application Server to DB connection over WAN.
• SAP HANA DB migration to AWS requires 2 steps
• Migrate SAP on traditional RDBMS to AWS
• Migrate SAP on traditional RDBMS on AWS to SAP HANA DB on AWS
Connection Over WAN
• Certain versions of SAP applications, kernel, OS/DB are supported
• Upgrade may be required before migration
• AWS only supports Unicode SAP systems
• Unicode conversion may be required before migration
• SAP on Oracle is now supported on AWS environment with limitations
• Real Application Clusters configuration is not supported
• Oracle Database 12c Multitenant Option is not supported
