Laying the Foundation for Digital Twins

Today, manufacturers look to create digital twins for their products to follow the entire lifecycle – from design, production, delivery, use, and service to end of life. The digital twin lets manufacturers of devices and machines offer new services and thereby fully exploit the opportunities of digitalization. But where does the digital twin begin? Is there a point where manufacturing companies can start?

DELIVERING A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO ENGINEERINGYou can lay the foundation of the digital twin right at the beginning, with the SAP® Product Lifecycle Management (SAP PLM) application and the SAP Engineering Control Center integration tool. Together, they help you integrate design data from CAD systems with the business data from your SAP applications so that you have the holistic digital product definition required to create a digital twin. SAP Engineering Control Center is the strategic integration platform from SAP for all authoring tools, including leading mechanical CAD (MCAD), electrical and electronic CAD (ECAD), and Microsoft Office solutions.

Extending Your Reach with Additional SAP Solutions

Benefit from the native integrations that SAP Engineering Control Center offers to functionality in the SAP PLM application to perform early product costing, collabora-tion, or asset management.

PERFORMING PRODUCT COSTINGIf you use the SAP Product Lifecycle Costing solution to manage costs, you can calculate costs in the early stages of development, when changes are easy to implement. The solution helps you perform calculations at the com-ponent level and aggregate them at the assembly level, displaying the result in SAP Engineering Control Center.

COLLABORATING IN THE CLOUD ON PRODUCT DESIGNToday’s product development teams often need to col-laborate with external partners or assign them individual

tasks in a development process. Partners who do not have access to the internal product lifecycle manage-ment system may need to complete work outside the enterprise. By integrating the SAP S/4HANA Cloud solu-tion for intelligent product design with SAP Engineering Control Center, you can set up a collaboration space in which authorized partners have role-based access to your data. Engineers can upload design data to the col-laboration space using drag-and-drop functions. Part-ners download construction data into their local CAD tool, work there, and upload the results to the collabo-ration space. Then your engineers import the finished work to SAP Engineering Control Center, with changes tracked. A smart assistant provides comprehensive information on created, changed, and updated data, thereby avoiding redundancies.
