YOUR DONATIONS AT WORK

The National Kidney Foundation meets the comprehensive standards of America’s most experienced charity evaluator, the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance. More than .82 cents of every dollar donated directly supports programs and services like these:

NKF Cares: Toll-free phone and email patient help line. Trained professionals provide information, support and resources to people affected by CKD (patients, family members) on a wide variety of topics.

Peers Lending Support: Free, national telephone-based support program that connects those experiencing CKD with an NKF-trained mentor who has been through a similar experience.

Your Kidneys and You: Volunteer-led presentation on kidneys, risk factors and preventative action steps with a focus on where to turn for more information.

KEY Screenings (Kidneys: Evaluate Yours) & Kidney Health Risk Assessments (KHRA): These screenings raise awareness of chronic kidney disease in the community and detect early markers of CKD, identify those who may be at risk and encourage them to follow up with their primary care provider. Staffed by medical professionals and lay volunteers, both programs include brief medical history/questionnaire, blood pressure and BMI measurements, educational information and consultation with medical professionals. KEYs include possible blood draw to test creatinine and glucose levels. Participants receive a copy of their results, are encouraged to discuss them with their healthcare provider and directed to contact the NKF for more information.

Patient Assistance Programs: Direct grants to help patients and their families meet basic urgent needs. We also provide free medical alert jewelry, nutrition supplements to eligible low-income patients and emergency transportation funds to local dialysis centers.

Educational Programs and Research: The NKF delivers patient and professional programs and resources in print, online, through multi-media and in meetings.

CKD Intercept: 5-year demonstration project that will drive the adoption of clinical practice guidelines aimed at improving kidney health related outcomes into the primary care work flow, develop CKD metrics, and develop models that demonstrate a clinical and economic return on investment for interventions related to early identification and management of CKD for insurance companies, employers, doctors and patients.

THE BIG ASK: THE BIG GIVE: People are waiting for a chance at a better life. The kidney transplant waiting list is getting longer, and in response, the National Kidney Foundation has developed THE BIG ASK: THE BIG GIVE. This initiative educates and raises awareness about living kidney donation and transplantation among kidney patients, their families, and friends. The ultimate goal of the program is to increase living donation and kidney transplants. Open to kidney patients, family members, friends, and potential living donors, these workshops provide interactive education about living donation and transplant, and teach the best, most effective strategies and tips for finding a living donor.

Drive for Dialysis: For thousands of individuals facing kidney failure, dialysis is a lifeline. It not only extends life, but also enhances its quality by improving appetite, energy levels, and other symptoms. However, spending up to 4 hours per day, 3-4 days per week sitting in the same chair can be mentally and physically taxing. This brand new program provides patients in our community with care packages to brighten their spirits and make the long hours of treatment a little more bearable.
