Joy Revisited If you recall, the Concert Band performed “Joy” by Frank Ticheli at the Samohi
Bands’ Winter Concert in January. “Joy” was inspired by the birth of Ticheli’s first child. “Joy Revisited” is more developed and written for more advanced players. It has the same harmonic, melodic and expressive content, but is more ornamented, and orchestrated differently.
The students enjoy playing this work very much. It has the same playful charm as “Joy” but more fun to play because of the added challenge.
On the Wings of Swallows“On the Wings of Swallows” was commissioned in 1999 by the North Syracuse
Central School District in memory of Pat Hays, a ninth-grader and promising alto saxophone musician who died after a tragic snowmobiling accident, shortly before the band‘s winter concert.
Then Band Director Holly Bossert called for the commission, quoting Hans Christian Anderson: “Where words fail, music speaks.” A very dramatic piece, “On the Wings of Swallows” opens with a call and response, has a slow section featuring a haunting alto sax solo (played tonight by a trio), and ultimately builds to a climactic brass fanfare. The title was inspired by a couplet from Shakespeare‘s Richard III: True hope is swift, and flies with swallow’s wings / Kings it makes gods, and meaner creatures kings.
The Earl of Oxford’s March“The Earl of Oxford’s March” first appeared in the 1591 My Ladye Nevells Booke, a
collection of music for the virginal (a small version of the harpsichord). Composed by William Byrd (c. 1540-1623), one of the great composers of the English Renaissance, it was very popular during Elizabethan times, when it appeared in a few popular books of music for virginal, most notably the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. Also known as “The Marche Before the Battell,” it is very possible that this work was used often as ceremonial music played by military instruments of the time.
Encanto“Encanto” is one of many works by Robert W. Smith written for school bands. It
features an alternating 6/8-3/4 meter similar to the rhythmic feel of Leonard Bernstein’s “America” from the musical West Side Story. It has a very catchy melody, and a very beautiful slow middle section that is very enjoyable to play.

Emperata OvertureA repertoire
standard for wind music, “Emperata Overture” was a very new sound for band music when it was premiered in 1964. It is based on five thematic ideas, and features a few measures metered in 7/8 and 9/8, which was uncommon for band music repertoire of the the time. It concludes with all five themes at the same time. It is probably composer Claude T. Smith’s most well known works. This very famous melody has been adapted in several different ways throughout its history. This arrangement by Alfred Reed highlights the rich sound of the clarinets, and contrasts the woodwind and brass sections.
Esprit de Corps“Esprit de Corps” is the second second Robert Jager work commissioned by the
United States Marine Band.Based on “The Marines’ Hymn,” this work is a kind of fantasy-march, as well as a
tribute to the United States Marine Band. Full of energy and drama, the composition has its solemn moments and its lighter moments (for example, the quasi-waltz in the middle of the piece).
The composer intends that this work should display the fervor and virtuosity of the Marine Band and the musical spirit and integrity of its conductor, Colonel John R. Bourgeois, for whom the initial tempo marking, “Tempo di Bourgeois,” is named. Colonel John Bourgeois is a dramatic, spirited conductor, who reflects the excitement of the music being played. When a tempo is supposed to be “bright” he makes sure it is exactly that. Because the tempo of “Esprit de Corps” is to be very bright, the marking just had to be “Tempo di Bourgeois!”
Danse of the Tumblers”Dance of the Tumblers” from Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera “The Snow Maiden”
has become probably more popular than the opera itself. This dance takes place during an episode in Act Three in which acrobats dance for the Tsar. Originally composed for orchestra, this work requires virtuosic playing by the members of the band.

Lightning FieldJohn Mackey’s “Lightning Field” takes its title from a work of art by Walter De Maria.
That work is a massive expanse of the New Mexico desert, claimed and transformed by the artist via an installation of steel rods planted in the earth and reaching toward the sky, they call down its power - literally creating man-made lightning storms. Like them, Mackey’s piece speaks to the ancient impulse to summon nature’s power, and the magic such acts unleash. A sense of energy runs throughout the work, with the driving onstage percussion enhanced by the sound of thunder, provided by hand-held percussion instruments called “thunder buckets.”
Blessed Are TheyJohannes Brahms (1833–1897) was moved to write A German Requiem for chorus
and orchestra by the deaths of his friend Robert Schumann and his mother. The decision to include the word “German” in the title is notable as is his use of German text (drawn from Martin Luther’s translation of the bible) instead of the traditional Latin. While most requiems are written as a mass for the dead, Brahms intended this piece to serve as consolation for the living. He avoided strict references to redemption through Christ for a non-denominational appeal. In an expression of his intentions, Brahms stated that he could have titled the work, “A Human Requiem.”
Barbara Buehlman scored the first movement of the masterwork for concert band. The title comes from the first movement’s choral text: “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. They that go forth and weep, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing their sheaves with them.”
Arabian Dances“Arabian Dances” was composed to portray an eastern celebration. Within the
beginning, the flute solo with low reed accompaniment sets the story, with a haunting melody. The addition of clarinets, saxophones, and trumpets make the solo flute seem as though part of a tribe, announcing the end of the day, and the additional winds the answer to the announcement. The low reed feature gives the piece a seeming wind down, as though the day has ended, and it is time for night to begin. The percussion then enter, as though festivities are about to begin. The light melody introduced by the high winds are the setting up of the campfire and food to celebrate the hard day’s work. A percussion feature with vocalization seems to make the atmosphere of the piece more dance like, as though the celebration has finally begun. When the winds come back in, they are broken into 3 groups, as though they are dancers around the camp. As more and more instruments join, the melodies attempt to outdo each other, until the entire
ensemble joins in, as though the entire tribe has finally joined the party. This continues until the campfire fades and the rays of morning begin to shine, and the tribe dances until they can’t anymore. This entire idea is shown through his strategic use of instrumental entrances, layering of textures, ostinato within the final third of the piece, instrumental features, and his use of authentic melodies “Ala Dal’ona” and “Tafta Hindi.”
Give Us This Day“The words ‘give us this day’ are, of course, from the Lord’s Prayer, but the inspiration
for this music is Buddhist. I have recently read a book by the Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh (pronounced ‘Tick Not Hahn’) entitled For a Future to Be Possible. His premise is that a future for the planet is only possible if individuals become deeply mindful of themselves, deeply connected to who they really are. While this is not a new idea, and something that is an ongoing struggle for everyone, in my estimation it is *the* issue for world peace. For me, writing music, and working with people to perform music, are two of those points of deep mindfulness. Music allows us to be immediately present, awake, and aware. ‘Give Us This Day’...Give us this very moment of aware aliveness so that we can build a future in the face of a most dangerous and difficult time.”
I chose the subtitle ‘Short Symphony for Wind Ensemble’ because the music really isn’t programmatic in nature. It has a full-blown symphonic character, even though there are only two movements. The music of the slower first movement is deeply searching, while that of the highly energized second movement is at times both joyful and sternly sober. The piece ends with a modal setting of the Chorale melody ‘Vater Unser in Himmelreich’ (‘Our Father in Heaven’), #110 from the 371 Four-Part Chorales by J.S. Bach.”

Danzas Cubanas Robert Sheldon is an internationally known composer and clinician. He began his
musical career with a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Miami and a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Florida. Sheldon has taught public school instrumental music in Florida and Illinois, and has also served on the faculty of Florida State University. He currently maintains an active composition schedule. Awards received by Sheldon include the Volkwein Award for composition, the Stanbury Award for teaching from The American School Band Directors Association, and eight “Standard Awards” from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. In 1990, the International Assembly of Phi Beta Mu named him Outstanding Bandmaster of the Year. “Danzas Cubanas” is a set of three original dance-like movements celebrating the joy and energy of Afro-Cuban music and the people of this island nation. The opening rhythm in the conga sets the mood, followed by a gentle and alluring non-salsa. The closing dance is a fast-paced mambo. An excellent multi-cultural music experience, the work includes solos for piano, flute, trombone, and trumpet.
