Event Santa CruzNearly three years ago, Matthew

Swinnerton started Event Santa Cruz to showcase the amazing entre-preneurs in Santa Cruz and, at the same time, create an event for people to network, listen to live local music, drink a beer or two and have a great time.

Event Santa Cruz has flourished and is now “the” monthly event for local business owners and entrepreneurs.

Every month, over 200 entrepreneurs and other engaged Santa Cruz resi-dents attend Event Santa Cruz to listen to short talks by local business owners. There is a different theme each month:

from photography to beer, to PopUp food to non-starving artist, Event Santa Cruz is not your run-of-the-mill network-ing event.

Next month, Event Santa Cruz is try-ing something different. On June 8 at 6

p.m. at the Rio, in partnership with Visit Santa Cruz County, “This is How We Cruz!” will be an epic extravaganza cel-ebrating the local people, places, projects and busi-

nesses that make Santa Cruz County such an awesome place to be.

You had a little talk with one of your employees last week.

Her client list has al-most no action and few new prospects on it lately, and that’s no good. She blames the economy, says it’s rough out there and while you know that’s true, you suspect there’s more to the issue: she’s stagnated. With the new book “When Strangers Meet” by Kio Stark, she’ll get back her gift of gab.

Every day, probably some-times without thinking, you speak with someone you don’t know well. It might be someone semi-familiar; a neighbor, perhaps, or maybe it was just someone to whom you wished a good morning. Those kinds of interactions, those tiny bits of humanity offered, give Kio Stark a lot of joy.

In today’s world, we often perceive strangers as suspicious; indeed, many people teach their kids accordingly. Stark says that we need to be careful, it’s true, but “stranger” may mean different things at different times. She also points out that “unpredictable and unpleasant are not by definition dangerous” and that despite our nat-ural propensity to stereotype, “we are surrounded by individuals, not cate-gories.”

What makes this idea even more interesting is what experiments prove: we feel better when we interact in small ways with people we

don’t know. Listen-ing to people makes them want to talk more and if they listen to your feelings, they’ll go even fur-ther. Talking to strangers often helps you gain empathy, too.

But none of this means that you

should go willy-nilly into the streets and start yakking. Some cultures frown on speaking with strangers, says Stark. In some places, “civil inattention,” in which you qui-etly, furtively acknowledge each others’ presence, is as good as it gets. Con-versely, there are many cultures that have never met a stranger.

The place to start, says Stark, is “to pick your moments.” We’re most receptive to small talk when we’re not rushed, so offer a compliment, ask for help, or ask a question of someone random. And then know how to extri-cate yourself because “Exits can be the most awkward…”

Cat got your tongue at work? “When Strangers Meet” can help make that cat, scat.

Though this isn’t a business tome, strictly speaking, author Kio Stark’s TED Talk book could just as well be called “The Art of Small Talk,” or perhaps “How to Network.” Beginning with anecdotes that illustrate the joy in both, Stark shows readers how small connections, chosen carefully or oc-curring spontaneously, can foster per-sonal growth and career enhancement. Yes, there could be some discomfort involved in what she advocates – intro-verted readers may particularly strug-gle here – but the exercises included toward the end of her book may help ease future talkers out of their comfort zones.

If you feel awkward in a strange sit-uation, or if learning to be loquacious is one of your career goals, this book might be a good start. For practice with cocktail chat or talking up a storm, “When Strangers Meet” offers unique advice and that’s all there is to say. n

1. Was there an event or moment in your life when you decided you wanted to own your own business?I don’t think there was a moment in particular. I liked the idea of having my own salon from the day I started beauty school at 16, but it gradually became a more realistic dream with time and experience.

2. What’s the biggest business mistake you’ve made and what did you learn from it?Paying for expensive print ads. Focus-ing on creating an awesome customer experience in the salon and online would have been a far more effective way to get new people in the door.

3. What advice would you offer an entrepreneur just starting a business?Find a mentor, or several. Never stop learning; take classes, read books. Try and prioritize self care once you get past the initial crazi-ness of when you first open. Know that your only competition is your-self. Always try and create a better

experience for your customer and don’t worry about what anyone else is doing. You’ll be busier than you can handle. I promise!

4. When you were younger, what was the first thing you bought with your own money? The first big purchase I remem-ber making that felt like a really big deal was getting my younger brother a gaming system for Christ-mas. I grew up very poor and always dreamed about being able to do those types of things for my family and friends. The people I love have always been my motiva-tion to be successful.

5. What do you do outside of work that helps you deal with the day to day stress of owning a business? So many things! I have an amazing husband who is my biggest support system. I spend time with friends. I do chair yoga and meditation. I go to therapy (which I personally think everyone should do). I get a mas-

sage every other week. I watch trash TV. I eat cookies. Whatever works! I try to take at least a little time each day to take care of myself so I can be more present and be a better busi-ness owner. n

Ready. Set. Glow.

Treat yourself to an afternoon of ho-listic rejuvenation. Glow & Grace

Collective presents its first holistic facial rejuvenation social event on Saturday, May 21 from 1:30 to 4:40 pm. Located at Ancient Waves Wellness, their new clinic overlooks the beautiful Santa Cruz Harbor. Lauren, Anna and Deva are experts in the field of holistic anti-aging and skin care. They will be offering mini treatments that combine ancient time tested techniques with new and inno-vative skin care advancements. This free social will also include demon-strations, skin enhancing herbal tonics, facial product sam-pling, free gifts and more! Lauren Moser, Anna Surber and Deva Cassandra, the owners of Glow & Grace Col-lective, all graduated with a Mas-ters degree in Traditional Chinese Med-icine from Five Branches University in Santa Cruz. With a mutual love for the combination of Chinese Medicine and Skin Care, they decided to join forces and form Glow & Grace Collective.

Lauren Moser, both a licensed acu-puncturist and licensed esthetician, fell in love with skin care at an early age as both her mother and grandmother

were estheticians. Wanting to deepen and expand her scope of practice, she moved to Santa Cruz from Maui in 2008

to study Chinese Medicine with the goal of combining her love of

both practices.

Deva Cassandra, originally from Mt. Shasta Califor-

nia, came to study at Five Branches University in order to

deepen her knowledge and ability as an professional herbalist. She is pas-sionate about incorporating herbalism and acupuncture into modern skin care practices to cultivate beauty and balance within and without.

Anna Surber, L. Ac., grew up in west-ern Nevada and attended the Univer-sity of Nevada-Reno on an academic scholarship. Her interest in healing and

promoting healthy self esteem lead her to enroll as a graduate student at Five Branches University in Santa Cruz, California. Through her education she found she was most interested in treat-ing the skin to help her clients feel beau-tiful and confident. For more informa-tion visit www.glowandgrace.com

1. Was there an event or moment in your life when you decided you wanted to own your own business? What was it?Not exactly. I was planning on doing corporate law and working for a big company. That changed when I started working for O’Neill as an in-dependent sales representative right out of college. It was probably the perfect career for me in that it was an industry I was already credible in and I was able to manage my own program even though ultimately, I had bosses. After about 10 years, I started to look for a new challenge and on a whim, purchased my first small business. That was Castaways, a neighborhood bar in Pleasure Point. The plan was always to keep my “career” and have the other business on the side but by the time I was starting my third “side business”, the new direc-tion was pretty clear. I gave up working for O’Neill after 17 years as a sales rep to focus solely on my businesses.

2. What advice would you offer an entrepreneur just starting a business?Be flexible/adaptive. You en-counter so many unforeseen obstacles with all the variables starting a business, it is im-portant to be able to navigate them without being too set on a specific course. There usually isn’t just one way to accomplish your goals, there are many. That path tends to evolve along the way.

3. What’s the biggest business mistake you’ve made and what did you learn from it?Underestimating the complexity of it all. What seems to be fairly straight forward in theory tends to always be more difficult in execution. There are so many moving parts that align-ing them all the way you want is of-ten easier imagined than in practice.

4. What do you do outside of work that helps you deal with the day to day stress of owning a business?Surfing has been my sport and ther-apy of choice since I was 11 years old. It’s so ingrained in my life that I rarely even think about it, I just do it. However, I fully recognize it’s signifi-cance to me and how it helps balance

MOTIV, Süda, Ulterior & Castawaysmotivsc.comeatsuda.comlionfishsc.com/ulterior thecastawaysbar.com

my entrepreneurial side. Surfing has definitely taught me to be patient. Through surfing I’ve learned to ac-cept the things I can’t change and not to give up on the things I care about

and can change.

5. When you were younger, what was the first thing you bought with your own money?Candy? Haha. I have no idea. We didn’t have much money growing up so I tended to use more creative means to attain the things I really wanted. From a very young age, barter-ing and salesmanship were my tools. When I really wanted my first surfboard, I traded a Walk-Man I got at the flea market for a bike that was then traded for the surfboard. I re-member making that happen. Before that, I’d just show up at home with new items and my mom would have to ask how I got them. n

Honestly, we were shocked. We attended a small business expo in San Francisco recently and

it turned out to be one large sales pitch. What we’re seeing now is large companies and start ups forming to solve small business owners’ problems, all without ever talking to them. We were amazed as we listened to talks and visited booths of endless “resources” who we could tell never even spent a day on the “streets” to experi-ence what business owners deal with, day in and day out. When it comes to “marketing solutions,” they shouldn’t break the bank, but beware there are more and more of them out there that will, without providing what you really need.

When it comes to being smart with your time and money, it’s important to perform a decent amount of due diligence before you buy into the solutions you’re being pitched. From our experi-ence, it’s best to always meet and speak with the person offering that product or service. Whether virtually or in person, the ability to see the actual person will give you a very good indication as to whether they are reputable. That “old-school,” face-to-face interaction will speak a thousand

words and will assist you in determining whether you should do business with that organization.

Here is our list of questions you should be ask-ing the person/organization who will be assisting you with a marketing service:

• What is your organization’s background and experience in providing this service?

• Why should I choose you to provide this ser-vice for my business?

• Have you worked with organizations in my industry? If so, which ones?

• If your competition is one of those men-tioned, ask to hear what their non-disclosure policy includes.

• What is your specialization?• Can you provide samples of your work or al-

low me to speak with references?• Will I be able to speak with a live person

when issues arise and/or I have questions needing immediate answers?

• Is there a time difference that I would need to deal with when contacting you?

• If everything looks good, remember you’re al-ways wanting to protect your marketing bud-get, so asking for some form of added value if you proceed with hiring them is always a must.

When it comes to services like advertising,

more than likely you’ve already been contacted by local, regional, national or online organiza-tions. Before you engage in a conversation with these ad reps, be sure you have done your home-work and have a very firm grasp on your primary target audience(s) and what they are all about. While many ad reps are legitimately speaking the truth when it comes to their product being in the hands of your target audience, it’s always worth your time to actually speak with your target audience to see if this holds true. If you do proceed with advertising, always be sure to ask for added value for your giving them your business and never forget to integrate tracking into ad creative as well as during your initial in-teraction with customers. n

SANTA CRUZ RECORD Productivity Technique

6. Give yourself a Break, Man!

You work hard - you de-serve a break! Maybe with a Kit-Kat, maybe with a cup of tea, maybe with a walk in the park. It’s easy to burn yourself out if you try to work at full throttle all day long. The truth is that our minds just aren’t designed to work that way. For optimal productivity, try the popular and praised Pomodoro technique - work for 25 minutes, then give yourself a five-minute break.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
