They say you can choose your mood.

If you want to be happy tomorrow, then be happy. Want to get rid of the blahs? It’s all mind-over-matter: pick some other way to be and don’t forget to tell yourself. Choose gratitude, playful-ness, contentment, choose your attitude or, with the new book “In a Daze Work” by Siobhán Gallagher, choose your own workday.

It’s still a little dark and you’re still in bed, somewhere in that twilight space between not quite asleep but not quite awake. What day is it? There’s where this book begins: turn to the appro-priate page or other, and get your morning started.

Did you hit “snooze,” and regret it, or oops – is it Saturday with a wide-open calendar? Say you get up, grab your phone “creep your ex,” and help a pal with a problem. Shower (why does conditioner disappear faster than shampoo?), examine a zit, any-thing to avoid going to work because it’s too early for life without coffee anyhow.

Or did you sleep in? Aw, no, you just cut your routine time in less-

than-half. You’ve got minutes to “rinse your pits over the bathroom sink” and out the door with you!

Once at work, you manage to kill time wisely until lunchtime, when a co-worker asks if you want to go to out. What do you do? Your mood determines the page and path you take; you might end up at a restaurant, or brown-bag-ging it at the park.

Back at the office. You spend a

little time working and a lot of time putting off that phone call you’ve gotta make. There’s a paper jam in the copier. You attend the most bor-ing meeting (how many words can anyone make from the letters “geo-graphically,” anyhow?) and finally, it’s time to go home.

So what will you choose to do after work? Family obligations? Turn the page. Fun with friends, go to another place in this book. Got a hot date lined up? Another page is waiting for you. Or do you just go home, chill out and binge on TV? Whatever sounds good, choose carefully on your way home. There’s a page in this

book you “totally” do not want to reach…

Wow. How much fun is this?Answer: “In a Daze Work” takes

a little getting used-to but it’s ulti-mately a lot of fun and, once you get the hang of it, it’ll be way too easy to get lost inside it for way too long. From a dawn’s-early morning, to a starlit bedtime, author Siobhán Gallagher pokes lightheartedly at the average worker’s existence, which can be sharply hilarious and alto-gether too familiar, or it can be safely cautious so you can play another day. Best of all, you get to control what happens next, so pick carefully…

No, you won’t find any career-en-hancing advice in this book. There’s nothing that’s going to make yourjob easier – but you’ll laugh, and if that’s all you need, then here. “In a Daze Work” is the right book to choose. n

Whether you’re a start up or a seasoned business, marketing is typically the first thing that’s

cut when trying to trim the fat on spending. We highly recommend that you shy away from this practice. If you do need to slash your marketing budget, it is possible to promote your business for as low as one dollar per day. You may not believe it, but just like anything in life, you typically pay for convenience so you don’t have to work harder. So, with just a little extra effort, you can make a huge impression without spending very much money at all. Here’s how to do it in five steps:

1. Develope a strategic partnership with busi-

nesses that align well with yours and have a similar target customer. The first step is know-ing your target market and being cognizant of where they shop, eat and spend time during a normal day. Being able to align with the right organization can help you reach your target customer in a variety of different ways.

2. If your target customer is family-based, explore the opportunity of aligning with a local non

-profit that has a youth focus. Work together in producing the perfect event or program for families as many schools allow fliers to be placed in elementary school cubbies and back-packs when non-profits play a prominent role.

3. If you and your target customer use Facebook and/or Instagram, spending one dollar in ad-vertising per day is a great way to reach those who will be interested in your product or ser-vice. Diving into the intricacies of Facebook advertising allows you to reach those who have visited your website, specific city blocks and neighborhoods, as well as people who have interests in products just like yours. It can be a little overwhelming, but Facebook offers many helpful tutorials.

4. Do you have an upcoming event or big news to share? Getting a little PR is a great way to spread the word, all it takes is your develop-ing relationships with the reporters and influ-encers that communicate publicly about your industry. Make sure your email subject lines are so tempting that recipients can’t resist. Always try to send individual, personalized

emails. Picking up the phone and having a real conversation also works. Make sure you’ve written down the top 3–5 points you want to convey, along with concise, memorable quotes that capture the essence of what you’re pro-moting.

5. Using the film crew in your back pocket, a.k.a. your mobile phone, is a must for you as a busi-ness owner. When it comes to social media and building a loyal following, it’s essential to take your fans behind the scenes. From seeing where you source your ingredients to how you create your product or service, we always ad-vise our clients to show people something they have never seen before. n
