Saint Nicholas was a real person. He was a Catholic Bishop, who lived a long time ago.

He loved other people and lived very simply so he could give things to others, especially children. He would give small gifts to poor children to bring the joy of Christ into their lives.

He always tried to help secretly. He didn't want any attention or thanks. Everyone loved Nicholas.

After he died, they told stories of the good and kind things Nicholas had done. And so, more and more people learned about good, kind Nicholas. They wanted to be like him. He is an example of how we should live. And that is why he became a saint.

Nicholas became the patron of many professions, but first of all he is patron of children.

History

Santa Claus a real person In childhood, instead of having fun out

with friends, Nicolas prefered to go to church. He spent leisure time on reading Bible.

As a young man he sailed, hunted, liked the wine and fun, but one day he heared the voice God, who ordered him to go to church. He did not know, that Council of Bishops decided to nominate on Bishop the first person who would appear in church that day.

As a young Bishop, Nicholas was fearless in his defense of the faith. He loved people and taught them to love another human being. He was nice, friendly and helpful. He helped a lot of people.

His fame spread rapidly in Middle Ages and thousands of churches were dedicated to him. As protector of the faith he staunchly defended the Divinity and was called upon by all those in trouble for protection, becoming Saint Nicholas, the Patron Saint of children.

Countless of legends are told about this man within both Western and Eastern churches. He was imprisoned during persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian but released later by Emperor Constantine. Nicholas died December 6th 343 and his body became a holy relic which was much sought after.

By the time of the Middle Ages Nicholas was one of the most well known of the Patron saints.

During a conversation the man complained that he had three beautiful daughters, but he wasn't able to afford a wedding for his daughters, because he hadn't any money to buy husbands for them.

After returning to home Santa Claus a long thought about it and decided to help that man.

He prepared three bags with the money and went to the man.

Because it was late, everyone slept. And the door was closed. So he went to the roof and through the hole in the chimney threw bags.

The bags fell into the girls' socks, which were drying by the fireplace.

The next morning joy was huge, and married life all the daughters was successful.

That's how the west was the custom of putting gifts into socks or boots.

Today…

In France the whole family gets ready for the saint's arrival on December 6. On the eve of the saint's day, children put their shoes near the chimney and sing a song to Saint Nicolas before going off to bed. The shoes overflow in the morning with special Saint Nicolas sweet treats—chocolates and special cookies. Even good children find ribbon-tied birch twigs, as everyone does something naughty!Papa Noel travels with a donkey. A little donkey carries baskets filled with children's gifts and treats.
