A PLACE IN HISTORY: Senior pitcher Matt Lujan passed Kevin Rose (2001-04) to be-come USF’s all-time starts leader with his 48th start on April 16th against Portland. He also claimed his 22nd win on April 16th to tie Patrick McGuigan and Dana Hendershott for career wins at USF. His next shot at becoming the Dons’ all-time victory leader will be on Thursday, April 21st at home against Santa Clara.

BETTER THAN THE REST: The Dons put together their highest scoring game of the season on April 16 against Portland, winning by a score of 19-2. USF totaled season-bests in hits (22), RBI’s (18), total bases (36), at bats (47) and home runs (3). USF’s totals in runs, hits and RBIs were also the most this year by a West Coast Conference team.

HOME RUN MACHINE: Stephen Yarrow hit three home runs in the series against Port-land. The first, which was also his first of the season, came via a grand slam on April 16. The senior third baseman added a three-run shot later that game and added a two-run homer in the third game of the series. He is now No. 3 in career home runs (34) at USF. He also moved into No. 4 in all-time extra base hits.

MR. CONSISTENCY: Connor Bernatz was the third Don this season to put together a hitting streak of 10 games or more. Bernatz hit safely in 11 consecutive games before Oregon denied him on a hit on April 18. Adam Clear notched a 15-game streak at one point this season with Pete Lavin going 10 games in a row with a hit.

MULTIPLE HITS: USF has 13 players that have registered multiple hit games this sea-son. Five of those players have done so in 10 or more games. Pete Lavin leads the team with 17 multiple-hit games and is the only Don to have notched four hits in one game this year. Junior Adam Clear has totaled three hits in four games this season.

SCOUTING THE BRONCOS: Santa Clara enters the series against USF having lost seven of its last nine games. The two wins, including one in 10 innings decided by a 1-0 score, came last weekend against Saint Mary’s to give the Broncos the series win. Each team has played San Jose State, UC Davis, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal Poly and Saint Mary’s this season. Santa Clara is 2-4 in WCC play, having been swept by LMU in the opening weekend of league play. The Broncos have a team ERA of 4.94. The Dons will face senior Cory Hall, who leads SCU in innings (63) and strikeouts (49) and has a 3.43 ERA, in game one.

LAST TIME VS. SANTA CLARA: San Francisco won the West Coast Conference series between the two rivals last year, taking games one and two by scores of 13-5 and 11-5. Santa Clara won the third game 12-6.

SCOUTING THE GATORS: San Francisco State is just 2-10 in its past 12 games with six of those loses coming by four runs or more. The Gators are 4-15 on the road and have only played nine games outside their conference (the California Collegiate Athletic Association) this season. Of the Gators that have taken at least 50 at bats this season, only four are hitting .250 or better this year.

LAST TIME VS. SAN FRANCISCO STATE: Nearly a decade has passed since the last time these two programs played. USF beat San Francisco State 9-8 during the 2002 season on April 16.

Junior pitcher/outfielder Bob Mott and teammates Cameron Love, Nik Balog and Jared Denham dreamed up a fundraising campaign for the Nothing But Nets Foundation, which raises money to buy malaria nets for families in Africa. For each home run USF hits this season, the Dons plan to donate a malaria net to the Nothing But Nets Foundation. Each net costs $10. To donate, please visit nothingbutnets.net and search for the USF team page.

GUEST APPEARANCE: Dons fans listening to the audio broadcast of USF’s game at California were treated to a special surprise when Giants’ announcer Duane Kuiper stopped by the radio booth to do an inning with Anthony D’Albora, the voice of the Dons. Kuiper spoke at the team’s crab feed kickoff dinner and pledged to keep in touch with the team.

WCC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: USF senior right-handed pitcher Matt Hiserman was named West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week for March 8-13. During the Cal Baseball Classic this weekend, the senior hurler totaled a win and a save and gave up just two hits in nine innings of work. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning against UCSB to preserve the Dons’ 3-2 win and earned his first save of the season. On Sunday morning, Hiserman threw eight scoreless innings and gave up just two hits to lead USF it’s first shutout of the season by way of a 4-0 win against Louisiana-Lafayette.

STANDING TALL: The Dons feature not only a hard-throwing and crafty pitching staff, but a physically imposing one as well. USF boasts 12 pitchers that stand 6-foot-2 or taller and four that are 6-foot-5 or taller.

WCC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Senior left-handed pitcher Matt Lujan earned his third career West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honor after an impressive season opener at No. 1 UCLA on Feb. 18. Lujan gave up just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts, while pitching a complete game for the Dons.

SINGLED OUT: College Baseball Insider dubbed USF head coach Nino Giarratano the best game coach in the West Coast Conference. It also listed senior Stephen Yarrow as one of the three biggest power threats in the conference.

THE HONOR ROLL: This fall marked an exciting time for USF head coach Nino Giarratano, who was inducted into two Hall of Fames and was named the Northern California Scouts Association division I Coach of the Year. Giarratano was inducted into the Pueblo South High School Hall of Fame and Greater Pueblo Sports Association Hall of Fame. MAKING THE GRADE: The USF baseball team posted the highest cumulative team GPA in a semester with a 3.26 during the fall of 2010 in program history. The previous record of 3.25 was set two years ago. An impressive 62 percent of the team earned a 3.0 or higher, with 97 percent of the team earning a 2.5 or higher. Five USF baseball players were also named to the West Coast Conference’s All-Academic team last spring.

RECORD-SETTING SKIPPER: USF’s 1-0 win against Saint Mary’s on April 9th gave head coach Nino Giarratano his 350th career Division I coaching win at USF. Another nine West Coast Conference wins will give Giarratano the seventh most league wins in WCC history. Giarratano is just 22 wins from passing Dante Benedetti to become the program’s all-time winningest coach. He will be honored for his milestone win on Saturday, April 23 before the Santa Clara game.

GET OUT THE BROOM: The Dons claimed their first series sweep of the season after taking all three games against West Coast Conference foe Portland. It was the second consecutive year USF swept the Pilots.

YOU ARE OUT: Junior Nik Balog is now third in all-time put outs at USF. The first baseman has amassed 876 put outs and leads the West Coast Conference with 321 putouts this season. He needs just 80 more to become No. 2 all-time.

SEVENTH HEAVEN: After hitting five doubles this season, Connor Bernatz is now No. 7 in career doubles (40) for the Green and Gold. He needs just four more doubles to become one of the top-five all-time doubles hitters for the Dons.

AMONG THE LEADERS: Senior Pete Lavin leads the West Coast Conference in hits (50), walks (22), total bases (72) and triples (4), second in stolen bases (14) and is ninth in batting average (.338). Junior Adam Clear is third in the league with a .356 batting average, while first baseman Nik Balog leads the WCC in put outs with 321.

SWING AND A MISS: Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kyle Zimmer struck out 14 against Saint Mary’s on Saturday, April 9. That put him in second in total strikeouts in a single game in USF history. Con Dempsey notched a program-best 16 strikeouts against Saint Mary’s in 1946. Zimmer was named West Region Pitcher of the Week for InsidePitching.com following his performance.

FIELD(ING) OF DREAMS: USF leads all Division I baseball teams in fielding with a .984 fielding percentage. The Dons have committed only 22 errors in 37 games and went without an error in 21 of those games.

TEAM EFFORT: Seven USF pitchers joined forces to post a complete game shut out against Cal Poly on April 5. The Dons struck out nine and walked just one. Senior Jonathan Abramson threw two innings of hitless baseball and Haden Hinkle posted one hitless inning.

ROCKING THE VOTE: USF has played 11 games against ranked teams this season, living up to the preseason ranking of the seventh toughest non-conference schedule in the country.

WALK THIS WAY: The Dons lead the West Coast Conference in walks, having totaled 109 free passes this season. A total of 15 different players have drawn walks. Pete Lavin and Stephen Yarrow lead the league in walks with 22 each.

HOME RUNS FOR HEALTH: Did you know that the Dons hit six home runs last week? That gives USF a total of 16 home runs this season. Keep donating to USF’s Home Runs for Health Campaign!
