Our detector dog, Hawkeye, is a tan hound and Labrador mix. Hawkeye began his life as a stray on the streets of Georgia. One day he was spotted by a woman involved with the SPCA and the United States Department of Agriculture’s dog training center in Georgia. She immediately noticed that Hawkeye was very friendly, full of energy, and was “food–driven”. These traits made him a very attractive candidate for training as a detector dog. Hawkeye is trained to inspect packages at FedEx, UPS, and the US Postal Service in order to detect agricultural products, like seeds, plants, fruits, vegetables, insects, and animals. He lets his handler know a package contains these items by scratching the box. The package is then inspected by an agricultural biologist to determine if the products are allowed entry into California. To Hawkeye, his job is a game and he is constantly trying to increase the number of rewards he receives (treats!) Through lots of practice and experience, Hawkeye has become a very proficient agricultural detection dog.

Every year, billions of dollars worth of agricultural products are shipped into and through California. Incoming shipments of items like seeds, plants, soil, fruits and vegetables can present a major risk to California’s agricultural industry, the environment, and our backyard gardens if they are sent from areas that have pests or plant diseases we don’t have here in California. Incoming shipments of agricultural products are an easy way for insects, plant diseases, and weeds to hitchhike a ride into the State. The best way you can help combat the spread of invasive insects, weeds and plant diseases is by not sending or receiving backyard grown fruit or vegetables through the mail. The fruits and vegetables may look good on the outside, but damaging insects and diseases can hide inside.
