A TEEN’S PERSPECTIVE

ON THE

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12 7 PM IN THE CHURCH

Join us as the teens of our parish lead us through a live

rendition of the Stations of the Cross. This evening is sure to help you begin your Lenten journey focused on Christ. Don’t miss this beautiful,

moving, and prayerful event.

Gather up the family and invite your neighbors and

friends. Everyone is welcome!

SOUP & BREAD SUPPER 6 PM IN THE PARISH HALL

Join us for our Lenten tradition of fellowship and good food. Please bring your own bowl and spoon.

Hosted by Religious Education and Youth Ministry

Lupita Parra, Director of Youth Ministry — 825-9611, x108 — [email protected]

A REFLECTION FOR TEENS Sometimes the closer we get to Jesus and the more we see of His power and glory, the more we want to depart from Him like Peter because we too recognize our flaws. It makes sense.

It’s like driving a car at night. When the headlights of a car in the oncoming lane hit our windshield, we see every scratch and every bug. However, heading toward the light is better than heading into darkness.

Remember, Satan doesn’t interfere in your life when you are living in the darkness, only when you are living in the light, it is this interference that makes us question ourselves. God created each of us and calls each of us by name, he wants us to re-spond just as we are.

Begins with 5 PM Mass, then to the Parish Hall

until 8 PM.

GIVING UP SOMETHING - A LENTEN PRACTICE As you know, we normally give up things for lent, but do you know why we do that?

First of all, we give up some pleasure for the 40 days of Lent because it is in keeping with the penitential character of the season.

The primary pillars of Lent are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. We do this with the intent to turn our hearts back to God, to purify us, and prepare us for the celebration of Christ’s resurrection at Easter.

I want to challenge you this year to think about how whatever you decide to give up is going to increase your relationship with Jesus. Let me give you an example. Let’s say that I decided to give up Facebook for Lent. The time that I would normally spend on FB would free me up to spend more time in prayer, reading scripture, or going to daily Mass. All of those things will enrich my spirit.

I also want to remind you that you don’t have to give up something. You can also take something up. Like doing your chores without attitude, or doing something nice for someone that is not expecting it. Whether you decide to give up or take something on, I hope that you experience a meaningful Lenten season. One that will fill your spirit with peace and love.

Learning to Set Boundaries with Adult Children Fr. Charlie Wehrley • Redemptorist Renewal Center • Sat., February 13

Parenting is a difficult job. Babies don’t come with instruction man-uals. Many parents struggle with knowing how to set boundaries with their children; especially as children become young adults. Are parents responsible for their children's drug addictions, lapsed faith, or financial struggles? These and similar questions plague the peace of mind of many parents. Unfortunately, many parents don’t know how to separate their children’s problems from their own; bounda-ries get blurred and parents feel guilty.

If you are faced with these difficult issues, this day retreat is de-signed for you. Come learn how to stop enabling them and set prop-er boundaries.

This retreat is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes lunch. For more info or to register, please call the Renewal Center at 520-744-3400.

I’LL DO IT You may have heard this one before: “There were four people named Everybody, Somebody, Any-body, and Nobody. An important job had to be done: Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody

was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. So Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.” Isaiah in a vision sees God’s overpowering holiness and majesty and realizes the gulf be-tween him and God and between God and God’s people. An angel declares, “[Y]our wickedness is removed, your sin is purged.” God asks, “Who will go for us?” and Isaiah immediately replies, “Here I am; send me!” (Isaiah 6:7-9). Isaiah doesn’t look for someone else, he makes no excuses, he does not hesitate. Nor does he ask what God requires; he has unbounded trust and willingness to do God’s will. Simon Peter and his friends in today’s Gospel have caught nothing. Jesus tells them to cast their nets in deep water, and the catch is huge. Like Isaiah, Simon Peter is only conscious of his own sinfulness, but Jesus tells him not to be afraid. Simon and his crew simply trust, and leave everything to follow Jesus.
