Santa Barbara Business College Celebrates 125 th Anniversary

Santa Barbara Business College will celebrate its 125 th anniversary this year.

One of the oldest colleges in the United States, SBBCollege opened its doors in 1888.

Founded as a co-ed finishing college by education visionary J.E. Metzger, SBBCollege was an instant success.

In the early days the school educated teachers and offered courses in banking, merchandising, shorthand, typing and business law.

Metzger said at the time: “The world moves with a wonderful velocity. Old methods are dead. The new ones are what you need and must have to move forward.”

Over the years, the College added programs to meet the demands of emerging industries and technology and expanded to five communities in Southern California. Throughout the last century -- including the Great Depression, countless earthquakes, and two world wars -- SBBCollege was a constant presence along California's Central Coast.

J.E. Metzger’s forward-looking legacy is the foundation upon which the College has built its reputation for producing students that employers are historically keen to recruit.

Today SBBCollege is a respected higher education college in California offering everything from diplomas and associate’s degrees through to bachelor's and master's degrees. Employers agree that the college provides a much-needed added ingredient into the education mix – preparation for the real-world.

“I see resumes all day long. The students and graduates from SBBCollege stand out in those piles of resumes I receive.” said HR Manager, Laura Segura recently.

“The graduates that I have hired have been eager to work, they have been dedicated to the job, they have a lot of professionalism and they are just ready to work.”

Hans Brikholm of Certified Orthopedic Prosthesis agreed: “We have not used anybody but Santa Barbara Business College when we need quality people. They seem to have some business acumen and also understand computers and telephone conversations and have a strong work ethic.”

The college has students in five campus locations – Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, Bakersfield, Ventura and Rancho Mirage as well as a growing number of online students from across the United States and beyond. Areas of study include business, healthcare, law and IT.

“We pride ourselves in looking to the future, beyond graduation. Employers like to recruit SBBCollege graduates because they know our students have the knowledge and skills that today’s businesses require and that they have also benefitted from the additional guidance and support that make them more job-ready.” Said SBBCollege President Matthew Johnston.

“2013 may be our 125 th anniversary but we are already looking to the future and we are determined to continue producing students that not only find jobs quickly but are equipped to achieve their true potential in business and in life.”

Small class size is one of the reasons why SBBCollege is so successful. Most classes have only 10 - 20 students.

Mr Johnston added: “The size of our classes allows us more oppor tunity to provide quality education programs that meet the needs of the individual student, the companies they will work for and the communities they will serve.

“Going forward, we will continue to produce graduates who are skilled, proficient and responsible.”

SBBCollege is currently planning a year of celebrations to mark its 125 th anniversary. Details will be announced soon.
