WELCOMENagle Catholic College strives to provide students with a very personalised level of care and attention. By identifying a child’s strengths and career preferences, the College can tailor their learning to reach their goals. Outside of the curriculum, Nagle aims to help each child to gain confidence, form friendships and be prepared to take their place in the world.

BOARDINGOur boarding students are accommodated at the Geraldton Residential College, which is a short 10-minute walk from the Nagle campus. Students are provided with a ‘home away from home’, modern facilities, healthy ‘home-cooked’ meals and a safe, supervised and caring environment. In partnership with the Residential College, Nagle has secured access to 45 beds at the facility.

Our Year 7 Director of Students, Mr Rohan Fariss, is also our Boarding Liaison Officer. In this role, Mr Fariss keeps in regular contact with our boarders and their families. Once per fortnight, staff enjoy a dinner with the boarders to offer support and advice as required.

Nagle Catholic College is a Catholic, co-educational secondary school established in 1994 to serve the needs of families in the Midwest region. The College is well regarded within the community and this is reflected in the current enrolment of over 1100 students from Years 7 to 12.

HISTORYThe College evolved following the amalgamation of Stella Maris Presentation College and St Patrick’s College in Geraldton in 1994. Nagle acknowledges the faith beliefs and traditions of both schools and seeks to develop the vision of their founders in a contemporary and modern Catholic setting.

Nano Nagle, from whom the College takes its name, founded the Presentation Sisters in Ireland in 1775. Their work was to offer girls education, formation and care which was at the time available only to those of the higher reaches of society. Inspired by their work, Edmund Rice founded the Christian Brothers in 1808. From then the Presentation Sisters and the Christian Brothers worked closely together and established schools throughout Australia.

PASTORAL CARENagle’s holistic approach to education ensures that particular attention is paid to the social and emotional wellbeing of each student. A variety of strategies ensure they remain happy and balanced in the way they view themselves and others. In many cases, this focus is developed through an integrated approach with students on a daily basis in classes and other activities. On other occasions, specific activities and experiences are designed to meet the pastoral needs of the students.

Students are encouraged to live out the College motto, ‘For Others’. In Years 7 to 10, students participate in Christian Service Learning and our Year 11 students have the opportunity to volunteer abroad as part of our Christian formation program, ‘Endeavour’.

Each student is assigned to a House within the College and is linked to a Home Room teacher who she or he sees at the beginning of each day. A Director of Students takes primary responsibility for the social and academic needs of students in each year and they are often the first point of contact with students and families.

The Aboriginal Liaison Officer takes particular interest in the pastoral care of our Aboriginal students and their families.

The College Chaplain provides students and staff with spiritual leadership.

In addition, the College Counsellors are available to advise students who are experiencing difficulties or concerns in their academic, family or social life.

Students have ready access to advice regarding elective selection, work experience, career choices, pre-requisites for courses in Years 11 and 12, access to TAFE, university entry and the world of work.

LEARNING SUPPORTWithin our educational setting, the College provides support for students with a range of disabilities and learning difficulties. The Learning Support Staff work closely with teachers and families to develop individual plans where there are learning concerns, learning difficulties and disabilities. Our resources include a specialised learning support centre within the College, The Hub. In addition to the centre, a team of teacher assistants support teachers within regular classrooms, helping to ensure students can reach their full potential.

THE HOUSE SYSTEMThe House system encourages teamwork and friendly competition within a supportive environment.

The names of the six original Colleges Houses derive from the Bishops who served the people of the Geraldton Diocese. Two new Houses, commissioned in 2014, take their names from Stella Maris College and St Patrick’s College.

The College crest is an ongoing reminder of both our ancestry and the continuing aspiration which embraces all who are connected with Nagle Catholic College.

The College provides a Christian education, founded in the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church. The formal curriculum and the less formal experiences of students at the College are designed to address the academic, spiritual, social, cultural and physical needs of each student.

All students attending Nagle undertake courses in Religious Education and English.

SENIOR SCHOOL

TUTORINGCurriculum Departments within the College each offer tutoring or additional support after school at no charge.

Years 7 to 9 Subject OfferingsYear 7 students will engage in a rotation of taster courses throughout the year. These are designed to give students an experience in new learning areas and provide opportunities to find out which subjects appeal to both their strengths and interests.

All Year 7 students take Integration Skills, a course that assists them with the adjustment to studying in a secondary school environment. In Year 8 and Year 9, students are offered a degree of choice and are given the opportunity to select specialised curriculum subjects to study. Year 8 students will choose eight elective courses to study and Year 9 students will choose six elective courses.

Year 11 and Year 12To meet the varied and individual needs of our students, the College offers a number of pathways that prepare students for university, for further tertiary education, for apprenticeships and for the world of work. The College offers a rich selection of ATAR and General courses, Certificate courses, UniReady courses, online courses, and vocational education and training (VET) pathways.

Students are encouraged to select their courses based upon their interests and abilities.

Year 10 Subject OfferingsYear 10 students will study the six core subjects and depending on their desired upper secondary pathway may undertake some of these subjects as pre-ATAR or pre-General levels. Students select one elective course per Semester to provide them with a more in-depth experience and as preparation for Years 11 and 12.

Instrumental ProgramThe College offers students the opportunity to learn an instrument through our Instrumental Program. Lessons are available for complete beginners through to the more advanced students. Students are able to apply their skills in a variety of ensemble groups and the choir.

Special Instrumental ScholarshipThe Year 7 Special Instrumental Scholarship program is offered to students who show potential for learning and excelling with a chosen musical instrument. With 25 scholarships on offer, the students selected will have the option to learn a band instrument or voice for free through the program.


CURRICULUM


The College Careers and Vocational Education and Training (VET) Department aims to prepare students for life beyond school in employment, training or further study.

Successful completion of VET provides students with nationally recognised qualifications that deliver the skills and knowledge required for specific industries and occupations.

JumpStart - Year 10The JumpStart program is designed to provide Year 10 students with learning experiences that focus on them achieving entry level qualifications and developing employability skills.

Students can choose from:

Nursing and Midwifery program

Senior School - Years 11 and 12A VET pathway can make school more interesting and relevant for students while kick starting their career with recognised qualifications. Students can graduate with their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and have the choice to continue with their TAFE studies or decide to move into a higher education course.

Cultural Awareness CampsThese camps provide students with an opportunity to connect with the land, grow in cultural awareness, and develop respect for Australia’s first people.

Language TripsThese programs provide a unique cultural experience allowing students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language and culture of a foreign country.

Service TripsThese programs empower students to make a positive impact on the lives and communities of others less fortunate. As part of the Endeavour Leadership Program, Year 11 students participate in an immersion pilgrimage to East Timor.

Sporting TripsAll students have the opportunity to be selected to participate in a number of Australian & Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC) Carnivals. The carnivals provide students the opportunity to further develop their skills whilst representing their school in a variety of sports. Year 11 students also have the option to go on the Gold Coast Netball trip held in the July school holidays.

St Patrick’s Day GamesEach year the College holds games to commemorate St Patrick’s College and the Irish heritage of our founding orders, the Presentation Sisters and the Christian Brothers. Students compete in a test of strength, endurance and strategy for their Houses.


RETREATS Retreats are an integral part of Catholic school life. Every Year group has a unique Retreat, with all students required to attend. They promote our College values, giving students an opportunity to examine their faith in the context of these, and to think about the role faith will have in their future.

The Endeavour Leadership Program is a ministry service program for students in Years 10, 11 and 12 with pathways for each Year group. Endeavour complements and builds upon the work done in the Christian Service Learning and Retreats Program.

CAMPS AND TRIPS Students at Nagle are given many opportunities to extend their learning outside of the classroom with a range of cultural, service, language and recreational trips, held locally, interstate and overseas. These provide students with active learning through fun and rewarding personal challenges in different and often beautiful surroundings.

SPECIAL ANNUAL EVENTS

Head Girl - Hannah TrussoIt is an honour and privilege to be selected by my peers and the College staff as Head Girl of Nagle Catholic College for 2020. Through my actions and words, and by working cooperatively with other student leaders, staff and the Nagle community, I will strive to uphold the school motto of being ‘For Others’ and help promote our positive, inclusive and nurturing learning environment.

Head Boy - Leroy AbbottIn this upcoming year as Head Boy, I plan to place engagement at the forefront of my focus. Engagement between students and their class work, teachers and their students, Year groups with other Year groups and students with the school itself. The continuous integrating of students ideas into decision making will help provide a basis for the school to keep flourishing.

INTRODUCING OUR 2020 YEAR 12 STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM In 2020, the College will be led by Head Girl, Hannah Trusso, and Head Boy, Leroy Abbott. As College Captains, they will be positive role models for students by being active, present and enthusiastic about all aspects of student life.

Throughout the year, Hannah and Leroy will represent the College at various functions, be involved in Student Leadership Council meetings, take responsibility for inducting the Year 7 students into the College, and represent all students fairly and consistently.


MINISTRY CAPTAINS Our Ministry Captains, Mikaela McAuliffe and Jay Santos will assist Father Dominic and the Deputy Principal Faith and Life to prepare and organise various liturgical celebrations at the College throughout the year.

In developing a sense of social justice, the Student Ministry Team promotes a sense of empathy with the marginalised, compassion, service and generosity.

CULTURAL AMBASSADORS Our Cultural Ambassadors, Lucy Lin and Mutsawaishe Chidamahiya will represent cultures and cultural diversity at the College. They will assist the Deputy Principal Faith and Life with the development and implementation of cultural programs and initiatives within the College.

Helping your child become a good student and become a good person.

At Nagle Catholic College, we create an environment where students can stretch themselves. Not just academically, but as well-rounded individuals and members of the community. We believe that good character and a sense of responsibility are important goals of a good education.

As a Catholic school, faith is part of everyday life in the classrooms. We complement this with Faith & Life Programs and Retreats outside of class times to build a rich sense of humanity and community.

Good will is part of our good name.

Our College motto is ‘For Others’ and it encourages students to take time to put others first. Our Retreats and camps are designed to encourage the respectful building of supportive positive relationships, address issues that concern young people, and celebrate the unique gifts and talents of each student. We provide rich experiences that create life-long memories, and through spiritual development, students cultivate their own moral compass.

We talk about Jesus as a role model, and we take inspiration from our co-founders, Venerable Nano Nagle and Blessed Edmund Rice.

Service to others is an important aspect of Christian values. Our Christian Service Learning Program is designed to focus on the students’ contribution to others, including an aspect of service in each Year group. The program helps build self-confidence, teaches new skills and develops relationships.

Christian Service Learning is our roadmap to helping others.

YEAR 7Students do work for family, friends and the local neighbourhood.

YEAR 8This program sees students responding to the needs in the College, Parish or other community groups to which the students belong.

YEAR 9Students are expected to broaden their horizons by offering their services to the wider community. They are invited to visit Aboriginal communities to assist with learning programs and to learn more about the Aboriginal culture.

YEAR 10Through the ‘Beyond the Boundaries’ program, students volunteer for a community-based program such as Opal Aged Care, The Salvation Army Thrift Shop, St Vincent de Paul, Juniper Hillcrest, Bethanie or Nazareth Care. Students can spend two school days serving at one of these agencies.

YEAR 11 AND YEAR 12Students are urged to pursue their own service in these years and obtain a certificate at the end of their schooling with a record of service.

Every Year group has a unique retreat.

YEAR 7 – ‘The Nagle Way’ Students learn about the origins and meaning of our College values, and particularly the focus value of the year. They also learn the story of our College founders, and how they inspired to help others.

YEAR 8 - ‘The Hero Within’This one-day Retreat themed ‘Community and Connection’, aims to impress upon the students how important it is to be an active member of our community, and how little acts of kindness and generosity can have a ripple effect that is felt far and wide.

YEAR 9 - Clár SolaisThis is a 4-day experience run by Nagle staff at Nukara Farm and other venues where students identify their unique gifts and talents, not always evident during normal school. It is an opportunity to ‘shine their light’, and encourage a sense of empowerment and respect for themselves and others.

YEAR 10 - ‘Into Adulthood’The Youth Mission Team (YMT) from Perth comes to work with students during this one-day Retreat. The aim is to encourage an appreciation of the value and worth of others, plus discuss the challenges of becoming young adults. The focus on is on identity and exploring the true meaning of being a man or a woman.

YEAR 11 - ‘At the Crossroads’This Retreat provides a time of reflection to think about relationships and acceptance of each other. The students examine important themes such as ‘Appreciating our true dignity and value’, ‘The power of influence’ and our ‘Relationship with our God’.

YEAR 12 - ‘Quo Vadis’ Where are we headed?This Retreat is a 3-day experience run by Nagle staff in New Norcia. The activities are designed to help prepare the students to confidently take the final steps to move into adulthood and becoming a responsible, well-adjusted member of society. This Retreat is particularly special as it is one of the last times students will relax and reflect asa Year group.

The Endeavour Leadership Program is a youth ministry service program for students in Years 10, 11 and 12 with pathways for each Year group. Endeavour complements and builds upon the work done in the CSL and Retreat program.

The focus is on “faith in action” and we encourage: exploration of why faith formation is important; being authentic in our service to others; and opportunities to show genuine leadership through our actions.

As part of the Endeavour Program, Year 11 students go on an immersion pilgrimage to East Timor.

Our Year 12 students are given the opportunity to participant in a life-changing event called the Camino Salvado. It is a five day 100km journey that retraces the footsteps of Rosendo Salvado, a Benedictine monk who walked from Perth to mid-western Western Australia to set up the New Norcia Catholic monastic community in the 1800s.

It is a challenging expedition that tests faith and courage, but becomes a significant formation experience for the students as they journey into adulthood.

“A sense of family was built on the Camino as everyone embraced differences and diversity through heart-to-heart conversations and sharing many laughs, triumphs and failures with new friends.”

Year 12s get to walk 100kms in someone else’s shoes.

Parnngurr Immersion

Located 370km from Newman in the Pilbara region, Parnngurr is home to the Martu people, one of Australia’s most remote and traditional Aboriginal communities. The nine day immerson provides Year 10 students with the opportunity to experience a traditional Aboriginal community.

This immensely rewarding experience sees the students challenged outside of their comfort zones and they discover the true meaning of community.

1. Nagle Catholic College is a Catholic school. The first condition for Admission is that the potential student and parents accept the values underlying the Catholic philosophy of education, and that the student undertakes to participate fully in the faith practices and observances of the school.

2. First preference in Admission is given to families who are actively associated with the Catholic Church. It is not desirable to admit students who would be disturbed because the values, beliefs and practices which are nurtured by the school are not encouraged and supported in the home. CAMPS AND TRIPS

All overnight camps or trips away are at an additional cost to the Family and are not included in the Annual School Fees account (HCC and NON HCC students).

In order, for your child to be able to attend any of these camps or trips, the family must be in good financial standing with the College. This means an agreed fee repayment plan must be in place and you must be making regular repayments to your fees account.

The College offers multiple payment options for the payment of your child’s school fees account. Prompt payment 5% (if paid in FULL be the end of February).

Outstanding Fees: If an account for Outstanding Fees is placed with a College Debt Collection Agency it will incur a commission fee of (up to 20%) and other legal fees, these will be charged to your school fees account.

Both parents are required to sign the student’s Acceptance Form and are jointly or severally responsible for the payment of the schools fees.

The Bishops of Western Australia have responsiblity for Catholic Education throughout the state. The Catholic Education Commission enables this important work of the Bishops. Within this context, Nagle Catholic College exists to further the mission of the Church, through the provision of Catholic Education and formation.

Nagle Catholic College shall accept all applications for enrolment.6. The acceptance of an application form does not guarantee an enrolment interview or offer of enrolment.7. Enrolment at Nagle Catholic College shall be offered only where the school has age-appropriate accommodation and the requisite resources to respond to any specific needs of the students.8. PROCEDURES 1. The primary purpose of collecting this information is to enable the College to provide education for students.

2. Some of the information collected is to satisfy the College’s legal obligations, particularly to enable the College to discharge its duty of care.

3. Certain laws governing or relating to the operation of schools require that certain information is collected. These include Public Health and Child Protection laws.

4. Health information about students is sensitive information within the terms of the National Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act. The College asks parents/guardians to provide medical reports about students from time to time.

5. The College from time to time discloses personal and sensitive information to others for administrative, educational, research and counselling purposes. This includes Catholic Education Western Australia, other schools, Government departments, medical practitioners, and people providing services to the College, including specialist visiting teachers, sports coaches and volunteers.

6. If the College does not obtain the information referred to above, it may not be able to enrol or continue the enrolment of a student.

7. Personal information collected from students is regularly disclosed to parents/guardians. On occasions information such as academic and sporting achievements, activities of students and former students, social and career developments and other news is published in College newsletters and on social media or the website.

8. Parents/Guardians may seek access to personal information collected about them or their child by contacting the College. Students may also seek access to their personal information. There will be occasions, however, when access is denied. Such occasions would include where access would have an unreasonable impact on the privacy of others, where access may result in a breach of the College’s duty of care to the student, or where students have provided information in confidence.

9. The College from time to time engages in fundraising activities. Information received from parents/guardians may be used to make an appeal to them. It may also be disclosed to organisations that assist in the College’s fundraising activities solely for that purpose. The College will not disclose personal information to third parties for their own marketing purposes without consent.

10. The College may include contact details in a class list and College directory. If parents/guardians do not agree to this they must advise the College now.

11. If parents/guardians provide the College with the personal information of others, such as doctors or emergency contacts, the College encourages them to inform such others, that you are disclosing information to the College and why, that they can access that information if they wish. The College does not usually disclose the information to third parties.

12. Photographs, video and audio may be taken and used in College and Catholic Education WA (CEWA) related productions, including, but not limited to, printed materials, online (website and social media), marketing, media and educational materials. If parents/ guardians do not agree to this, they must advise the College.
