SANDTON CHRONICLE2 • News Week ending 2 July 2010

KATE HENRYSANDTON police has recovered a cache of stolen goods that may be linked to armed robberies in the area.

Last week the Chronicle reported that the quick action of Sandton police thwarted a robbery in progress in Bryanston.

Two men were arrested after a shoot-out with police while trying to fl ee the scene. Another pair escaped over the back wall of the property.

According to spokesman Captain Kym Cloete, it has since been discovered that the vehicle used in the incident was hijacked in Bedfordview.

Further investigation led Warrant Offi cer Bruce McIntosh and his team to several properties in Alexandra, Bramley View and

Klipfontein where they recovered suspected stolen property including DVD players, speakers, a grey wall safe and a personalised pen set with the engraving ‘Charlotte Slabbert, Head Girl 2008’.

“We also believe the men might be linked to a red Mini seen in the area that is suspected to have been involved in armed robberies.

“The mini had interchangeable magnetic boards on the side panels. We ask that those who believe they may have been victims of these men to please come forward and identify the suspects or the stolen property.”

Police Report

CHRONICLE REPORTERA SECURITY offi cer at Melrose Arch arrested a 35-year-old woman for defrauding people at an ATM.

Further investigation by Norwood police revealed that the woman was previously arrested in Kempton Park for the same offence.

“It is alleged that a man in charge hires devices out to several women. While

pretending to assist a victim at the ATM, the criminals swipe the victim’s bank card in the device, which stores the information.

“This information is later downloaded and used to commit card fraud. The women are allegedly paid according to the number of cards swiped in the device,” said Norwood police spokesman Captain Phillip Magenedisa.[email protected]

KATE HENRYWHEN a Danish tourist left his wallet, passport and World Cup tickets in the back of a metered taxi, he probably thought he’d never see them again.

But on spotting the man’s bag on his back seat, the driver dutifully headed to

the Sandton police station and handed it over.

Captain Moses Ntshudisang contacted the Danish Embassy, and diplomatic police retrieved the man’s belongings and returned them to him.[email protected]

DONALD LOBELOMORE than 150 shacks burnt down at an abandoned factory in Marlboro just opposite Alexandra.

According to Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesman Percy Morokane, about 450 illegal squatters were left homeless after the fi re started just after midnight.

“The fi re started at about 3.30am. It took about two and a half hours for the fi refi ghters to bring the fi re under control,” said Morokane.

A few people managed to save their possessions before the fl ames spread. Many, however, have lost everything.

Lucas Matlala, who lived at the squatter camp, said he was traumatised and had lost everything. “I’m heartbroken because I have nowhere to go. All I’m left with are the

clothes I’m wearing. I don’t know where I’ll sleep because I don’t have any money and I’m unemployed,” he said.

Morokane said the building had been condemned and was not fi t for human habitation. “The building lacked water and electricity. There was an illegal connection of electricity which might have caused the fi re,” Morokane said.

A baby sustained minor injuries on her hands but there were no serious injuries or deaths.

The disaster management staff was on the scene to organise relief from donors in the form of clothes, food and blankets.

Godfrey Sigudu from disaster management said they would wait for assistance with accommodation from the housing department. [email protected]

DECISION-MAKERS willing, Gauteng and Joburg could be world class.

Take for instance the specialised World Cup Courts, which in just over three weeks had heard more than 100 cases, most in Gauteng.

More than 50 percent of these resulted in prosecutions and included offences such as the sale of fake Fifa merchandise, fraud, theft, robbery and possession of drugs.

Think of what a similar approach could do for Mzansi if these courts became permanent after the 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa™ has ended. It means suspects arrested for ‘low profi le’ crimes could be prosecuted within a short space of time.

Victims of crime and their families would no longer have to sit in court and listen to the gory details of their experiences years after recovering from the trauma.

Cases like that of a one-year-old Randburg girl and her minder who

were brutally attacked would be heard and concluded when public emotions were still high.

In addition, the High Court would be free to deal with high profi le cases. The result would be that those behind the 2005 murder of mining magnate Brett Kebble would have been locked up by now. Also, the case against former police commissioner Jackie Selebi would have been concluded without pushing lower profi le matters off the court roll.

So, to be world class, South Africa does not necessarily have to host a global sporting event.

On the pitch, the World Cup has continued to be a massive party and problems such as transport hiccups experienced in the early days have stabilised.

And true to their ubuntu nature, our generous boys in green and gold changed their minds about winning the World Cup and decided to give other teams a chance. [email protected]

KATE HENRYGALLO MANOR Domestic Watch took on a different tone this month with a ‘secret’ lesson.

Coordinator Penny Steyn roused the crowd with a traditional song before handing over the lesson to her ‘secret’ weapon - Fabien Nové-Josserand.

Domestic workers sat entranced by an energetic Nové-Josserand who regaled them with tales of his life with HIV for 27 years. Diagnosed in 1983, when HIV/Aids was offi cially recognised, Nové-Josserand was initially told he might have two years to live. Now he spends much of his time debunking the urban myths and misconceptions which shroud this illness.

Nové-Josserand, who has never developed full-blown Aids, explained that one of the ways he found to live with the disease was by befriending it. “I accepted that I would be living with it for the rest of my life, so I tamed it and even gave it a name - Alphonse.”

Steyn said, “I know some might think that this is not the forum for this kind of talk, but if you die before your time that is a crime.”

Alive... Domestic workers and gardeners sing with Penny Steyn to raise their spirits at the Gallo Manor community centre.

MATTHEW WOODDOUGLASDALE police and residents are working together to reduce crime and increase services as the expansion of the police station reaches it fi nal stages.

Several blue and white buildings have been constructed, framed with fresh gravel and small garden paths. Aside from enjoying the new look, members of the public will no longer experience the hassle of waiting in long lines to report an emergency.

The project includes the upgrade of the police parking area that was previously a dust bowl.

The corner of Witkoppen Road and Douglas Drive that was once littered and unkempt has now been paved,

treed and enclosed in a palisade fence.

The station has also been equipped with more furniture and eight patrol vehicles. Heading the project is precinct CPF Jean Berdou. “We are extremely pleased with the support and cooperation of the committee, the public, Brigadier Jenny Naidoo and her staff. It really has been an amazing journey.”

“We have six new offi ces, new computer and TV systems with DVD training capability as well fresh coats of paint, new lighting and new fl oors. The morale of the offi cers has soared which might explain why crime has been reduced so drastically.”[email protected]

AMANDA WATSONA SCOPING report by environmental consultants has seemingly paved the way for a proposed skydeck petrol station over the M1.

Residents have already objected to plans for a petrol station over the M1 at the Atholl Oaklands on/off-ramps.

The developer, Wealth Evolving Investments (Pty) Ltd, would like to bury six 46m³ and two 23m³ tanks on the southband off-ramp.

Coupled with a rezoning application that aims to turn public open space adjacent to the highway into a petrol fi lling station and related activities, the skydeck could be a fait accompli.

The scoping report stated the closest river was the perennial Sandspruit, which fl owed from the James and Ethel Gray Park through

the site, where it was joined by a tributary to fl ow into a concrete canal past Melrose Arch.

“But the Joburg Wetland Audit clearly shows that the proposed skydeck is in a wetland which seems to have been conveniently ignored in the latest application,” objected Marian Laserson.

“I went to a building adjacent to the park and was shown how a building was fl ooded by rising water at least twice this year.

“The river in the immediate vicinity is the Sandspruit, a very important tributary of the Jukskei River. This is unacceptable and potentially ecologically disastrous, when you think of oil and petrol spillage washing into the streams

and ground water,” said Laserson. She also questioned the wisdom

of building a petrol station directly under high voltage power lines.

Laserson added objections to the town planning application were

closed on 7 June, but objections and comments for the environmental impact assessment (EIA) were ongoing. “The public can comment individually on the EIA and register as an interested and affected person. If anyone has any environmental or historic knowledge of the

area, please register as this kind of information is critical to an EIA.”

Eskom acknowledged receipt of questions put to it via e-mail and replied it would have answers soon.[email protected]

CHRONICLE REPORTERJOBURGERS can enjoy a panoramic view over Sandton with the opening of The Legacy Bridge.

The 24m weatherproof bridge over Maude Street links the Michelangelo Towers, Sandton City, Nelson Mandela Square, the Sandton Convention Centre and the new Legacy Corner.

Offi cially opened by Fifa president Sepp Blatter and Legacy Holdings chairman Bart Dorrestein, the steel and aluminium glass structure,

pre-manufactured off site, was installed by connecting the second level of the Michelangelo Towers Mall with the upper level of the Sandton Convention Centre.

Dorrestein said, “We are honoured and thrilled that a gentleman of Blatter’s world standing has formally opened The Legacy Bridge. We are convinced that this walkway will lead to great rewards and opportunity for South Africa, as our country continues to offer world class facilities in numerous spheres.”[email protected]

AMANDA WATSONA SEARCH is ongoing for the owner who left a dog to die.

In January, the organisation found a chow cross abandoned at a vacant house in Oaklands. The stench from the property had prompted a neighbour to call the SPCA. An SPCA inspector found the dog was still alive but had to be euthanised because of its extreme suffering. Investigators have found that the house was registered to a Chinese company and they were trying to trace the owners as charges have already been laid in terms of the Animal Protection Act.

Charlene Smith of Midway Mall in Corlett Gardens has since come forward with a R10 000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the owner of the dog. No arrests have been made.

“The investigation is a slow one,

BAFANA Bafana’s World Cup adventure is over, but they left the tournament in style.

The country’s pride was restored in the fi nal match as our boys pushed themselves in an attempt to rescue the nation’s campaign.

As things stand, we have made history by being the fi rst host country not to qualify for the fi nal 16.

But despite that, the team deserves a good pat for a scintillating performance against the French.

To those who supported Bafana, do not despair. The boys have learnt a thing or two on how to play against the big guns of the soccer world, and we can stand proud of a tournament that, so far, has been an outstanding success.

Most importantly, visitors continue to marvel at our warmth. To all those foreign

soccer fans still here, continue enjoying the beauty of the country, and feeling at home. Reports that Gauteng municipalities were owed a staggering R24 billion are cause for concern.

There is no doubt our municipalities lack the ability to exercise debt control, a clear sign some municipal offi cials aren’t performing their duties. Their principals, too, are failing to monitor

the situation. Something drastic needs to

happen or we’ll fi nd municipal coffers empty with not a cent left for service delivery.

For some municipalities to say that the money owed them is old debt, a result of unemployment and the recession, is a lame excuse.

LEONA DIBAKOANEDURING their school holidays, three young boys brave the freezing cold very early each morning, to dig in dustbins for food.

The boys, who cannot be named, are aged 11,12 and 13, and attend Witkoppen primary school. Each morning they walk 8.5km from the Kya Sands informal settlement to Fourways in search of something to eat.

“During the term we eat at school where there is a feeding scheme, but it doesn’t operate during the holidays,” said one of the boys.

Looking frail and cold, the youngest boy said, “We wake up at 4am to get to the bins before the truck collects the rubbish.”

Lynne Cawood, director of Childline, said, “Many children depend on that one meal at school.

“When a situation such as this is reported we investigate and refer the children to social workers, but we appeal to churches and businesses in the area to help provide for the needs of their most vulnerable community members.”

Doctor Jean Bassett, executive director of the Witkoppen Health and Welfare Centre said, “We have established a relationship with the Witkoppen primary school, and provide medical assistance and food for the pupils during school term. But we were not aware of their struggles during the holidays.

Search for food

“We do have a door-to-door programme for the needy in the Diepsloot, Kya Sands, Zevenfontein and Thabo Mbeki informal settlements. However we require guardian consent which is why we urge schools to inform parents about us.

“If anyone identifi es young children as needy please bring them to the

centre where we will perform a medical examination, provide them with food and refer the matter to social workers.”

TASSYN MUNROBLOW your vuvuzelas and stop criticising the South African government and its decisions about hosting the 2010 Fifa World Cup™, said the Minister of Sport Rev Makhenkesi Stofi le.

The minister addressed the youth at Birchwood Hotel in

Boksburg. He disputed certain critical public views regarding the amount government has spent on the event.

Stofi le revealed that government had invested about R40 billion in the World Cup. “This was used, for instance, in the construction and renovation of roads, airports, public

transport, hotels, and sport facilities such as the 10 World Cup stadiums.”

He said this brought a value that would benefi t South Africa for decades ahead and was not just frivolous spending to fuel an international pastime.

According to Stofi le, the economic impact of the World

Cup was estimated to be R93 billion. “South Africa hosting the tournament has increased employment and improved the skill levels of workers which will benefi t the country immensely. In addition, this exciting time will see our country presented as an active and winning nation.”[email protected]

CHRONICLE REPORTERFIRST National Bank (FNB) has announced that the Calabash stadium known as Soccer City will retain its original name after the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ has ended.

According to FNB 2010 marketing head, Vicki Trehaeven, on 18 July Soccer City will once again be called the FNB Stadium.

The stadium had its name changed in compliance with Fifa’s strict sponsorship regulations three months prior to the tournament.

But in 2007 an agreement was reached between the Department of Public Works, Soccer City, Soccer Development Trust, South African Football Association and FNB to maintain the future naming rights after the tournament.

Reports have surfaced over the past few months that the stadium would be called The National Stadium after the tournament ended.

However, FNB confi rmed that

its strong relationship with the stadium would remain until at least 2014.

“Full naming rights for a period of 10 years from 7 July 2004 were granted to FirstRand Bank Limited and these naming rights grant us the exclusive rights to name the stadium First National Bank Stadium or FNB Stadium,” said Trehaeven.

Since 1987 FNB worked with the then National Soccer League to provide funding support for the stadium to be built. [email protected]

GUGULETHU NKOSIBetween 2006 and 2009 contracts worth R962 million were awarded without tender to various companies by the Gauteng Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works.

This was revealed in a written reply from Bheki Nkosi, Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC, to questions posed by Jack Bloom, Democratic Alliance Gauteng spokesman on corruption.

The contracts were awarded to companies when Sibusiso Buthelezi and Ignatius Jacobs were head of the department and MEC respectively. Buthelezi resigned in November last year

with a R1 million settlement, after the Resolve Group was tasked with investigating allegations of the irregular granting of contracts.

According to Bloom, a few of the contracts awarded were justifi able on the basis of sole supplier, in that they were the only companies able to provide a particular product. He argued that the rest could have been awarded to a number of other companies that provided similar services at cheaper rates.

“The contracts that were not awarded on a sole supplier basis should have gone out on open tender in order to get the best

value for money.” Bloom disclosed that the

largest contract, worth R537 million, was awarded to Tau Pride and Maziya Construction to complete the Jabulani hospital in Soweto after the previous contractor failed to deliver.

Philemon Motshwaedi, spokesman for the Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works, confi rmed contracts related to the department at that time had been subjected to a review process. “A total of 207 contracts are under review. The outcome will determine steps or action to be taken in that regard.”

Did you know? According to Bloom, companies that benefi ted include: Nomvula Maswanganyi of Acresa Consulting, R3.8 million in October 2007 as task team convener to fi nalise phase 1 of the turnaround strategy. Questek, R232 milllion in 2008 for electronic monitoring. Idzima Training, R6.3 million in June 2008 for reconciliation of traffi c fees. Bhekanani Building Construction, R12.2 million in December 2008 for a new ward at Sterkfontein Hospital.[email protected]

TASSYN MUNRODON’T burn anything, whether it is grass or rubbish, in residential areas.

In addition, stop throwing cigarette butts out of car windows while driving or having a braai in windy conditions.

These were some of the stern warnings issued by Emergency Management Services (EMS) with regard to winter.

This came in the wake of an upsurge of incidents of veld fi res in and around the city, some as a result of controlled burns.

According to Dr Audrey Gule, executive head of Joburg EMS, in the past weeks many grass fi res have darkened our skies, polluted our environment and caused a drain on the city council’s budget.

“Over the years, we have seen fi res spiral out of control to end up in runaway infernos.”

“It is hard to come to terms with the devastation caused as a result of reckless and negligent burning.Although it is our primary duty to lessen the impact of such loss, reacting to calls means committing resources, both human and physical.Sometimes repeat servicing is necessary due to re-ignition.

This costs the City of Joburg

NIE CELEMUNICIPALITIES in Gauteng are owed R24 billion in unpaid accounts for rates, electricity, water and sewerage.

The three worst cases are Joburg with R8.4 billion, Ekurhuleni with R7.6 billion and Tshwane with R3.6 billion. This was revealed by Mike Moriarty, Democratic Alliance shadow MEC for Finance, who said this information was contained in the Provincial Gazette Extraordinary, number 77 of 14 May 2010.

Moriarty said there was clearly a lack of political will to apply credit control, which meant no end in sight to the culture of non-payment.

“There will also be an increasing prevalence in terms of inadequate service delivery as municipalities

fi nd it more and more diffi cult to pay for resources.

“Any businessman will tell you that if you want your invoices paid you cannot allow the arrears to grow and debts to get old. But, in Gauteng, 79 percent of the outstanding money is for bills not paid in over three months.”

Meanwhile City of Joburg spokesman Virgil James said the majority of this debt was very old but remained on the books of the municipality.

“Account holders are not able to pay because the recession and unemployment have had a huge impact on their commitments. The debt has also mounted because of the economic climate, not our inability to collect.”[email protected]

GUGULETHU NKOSI AND TASSYN MUNROPHASE 1 of the multi-billion rand freeway upgrades project in Gauteng will soon be completed.

According to South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral), come April 2011 most freeways under construction would be fully upgraded and an open road tolling system in place.

Sanral also announced that, to date, at least R21 billion had been

spent on construction. According to Alex Van Niekerk,

Sanral project manager, many milestones were achieved including 34 interchange upgrades some of which are William Nicol, Rivonia and Malibongwe drives, and Gillooly’s.

“Some 18 months on, it is incredible to see the amount of work our contractors have managed to complete. We have now completed 80 percent of the fi rst phase.”

Van Niekerk also revealed that roadworks were suspended in most areas because of the World Cup and would commence after the conclusion of the tournament.

He explained that the toll system would be put in place once the project was completed. “This ensures that the infrastructure is provided when it is needed, and dedicated funding is available for the maintenance of the roads.”[email protected]

Princess plants cherry treesHEATHER WALKERWHILE in Joburg as the Japanese football team’s honorary patron, Princess Takamodo of Japan joined Mayor Amos Masondo in planting two cherry trees at the Botanic Garden in Emmarentia.

Masondo also presented the princess with a bonsai as a gift from the city.

“We are honoured that Her Imperial Highness has taken the time to acknowledge the value of the planet by planting her homeland’s national tree,” said councillor Matshidiso Mfi koe, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Environment.

“Thank you for highlighting the importance of greening. You are a champion of our hearts. You and Masondo have demonstrated the importance our countries place on cultivating a healthy environment. The mayor was recently presented with a certifi cate from the United Nations Environmental Programme that acknowledged his leading role in redressing environmental disparities in Joburg.”

Japanese ambassador Toshiro Ozawa

said, “Today’s tree planting cements the close relationship South Africa enjoys with Japan.

“To celebrate the century of relations between our countries we intend to plant 100 cherry trees in South Africa. The fl owering cherry tree is a well-known symbol of Japan and the 8 000-year-old tradition of hanami (cherry blossom viewing) is popular in many countries.”

Japan has the oldest hereditary monarchy in the world, which traces its roots to 660BC.

Princess Takamodo was the fi rst member of the imperial family to visit South Africa. Takamodo has degrees in anthropology and archaeology from Cambridge University and is the widow of Emperor Akihito’s cousin.

She is the honorary president of several organisations, including BirdLife International and Ikebana International. “I am really enjoying my stay in this beautiful country and am glad to contribute to greening the city,” she said. [email protected]

Call to extend free pet registrationCHRONICLE REPORTERTHE Democratic Alliance (DA) in Joburg has called on city council to extend the free pet licensing period for another two months due to general public confusion.

Safety spokesman Darren Bergman said he tested the system by phoning the Region E health department and was wrongly advised.

“I have tried to get information from the City of Joburg website which also proved unhelpful. My colleague and I have been fi elding all sorts of calls that suggest there are too many pet

owners out there, unaware of the by-law, who do not know where to turn for help.

“It is important that this good, clean piece of legislation is not marred by poor communication from city council. We should get residents comfortable and behind us on this matter.

“As a show of good faith let’s extend the free registration deadline and communicate the by-law and registration more widely.”

CHRONICLE REPORTERTHE 10th Discovery 702 Walk the Talk is around the corner.

The organisers are pulling out all stops to ensure the event runs smoothly and this will include implementing several road closures on the day. On Sunday, 25 July a record 50 000 walkers will converge on Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Road, Emmarentia. This will be the starting and ending point for this year’s event. Four different walks with staggered starting times will take place on the day. These include the 30km, 15km, 8km and 5km walks beginning at 6.30am, 7.30am, 9am and 11am respectively.

A number of roads in and around Emmarentia will be closed to traffi c on the day. Closures will be effective half an hour before each walk begins. Roads

will be reopened immediately after every intersection is clear of walkers, therefore allowing the least possible time of closure.

Please note that the 8km return route will now run parallel to Barry Hertzog Avenue on Clovelly Road, in order to free up traffi c congestion. However all participants will cross over Barry Hertzog Avenue into Troon Avenue. Secure parking will be available on the day at the Johannesburg Botanic Gardens, to be accessed off Thomas Bowler Avenue from Beyers Naudé Drive. A comprehensive list of all road closures and detailed route map is available on www.702.co.za and www.sandtonchronicle.co.zaDetails: Discovery 702 Walk the Talk offi ce 011-463-2743.[email protected]

ABED AHMEDBANKER Gareth Kin of RMB Private Bank is no stranger to the ‘hard work pays off’ motto.

Kin drew himself into a rags to riches story that took him from a temporary entry level position to a private banker in under three years.

Dreaming of working in the fi nancial sector, Kin completed his matric at Fourways high school and studied for a degree in investment management at the University of Johannesburg.

Once completed, he signed a small short-term contract with Sandton’s RMB Private Bank entry level operations centre which quickly became permanent.

He was promoted to the

structured lending division after which he took up the position of private banker.

Living the single life at 25, Kin has enough time to complete his honours which he studies part-time.

“I always set myself goals and, in the short-term, I intend studying towards a Chartered Financial Analyst degree. Once qualifi ed I’ll set myself further goals.”

Kin said he wanted to remain within FirstRand Group as he believed it had a solid structure which suited him. “My philosophy in life is perseverance equals goals. Work hard at what you do, never give up, and you’ll achieve what you have set out to achieve.”[email protected]

Waving the flagAnne Spottiswoode writes:THANK you Sandton Chronicle head offi ce for your fantastic fl ourish of fl ags and marvellous mural.

A great display of support for our Boys, and how they brighten up a rather dingy stretch of Jan Smuts Avenue through Craighall!

This passionate vibe has been shown by many other businesses and private individuals.

Surely only the most curmudgeonly among us could deny that this whole ambiance, including the fl ag-sellers on our kerbs, hugely enhances the festive appearance for

the World Cup?This is such a tremendous

international event for us to host, with many potential advantages down the line; however, regrettably, along the way there have been those doomsayers and critics who said we could never bring it off, etc, even wishing the event to be given to Australia to stage.

Bet that did nothing but spur our organisers on to even greater efforts. Are these detractors now not a little subdued at the success achieved and the huge enthusiasm shown by locals?

The party-poopers, too, who,

despite occupying prominent premises on corner vantage points, have yet to make a single outward gesture of interest or support, might deign not to fl y our national fl ag but have, nevertheless, nailed their own true colours well-and-truly to their prejudicial masts.

Many thanks, too, to those involved with the transformation of the long-neglected wedge of land at the William Nicol Drive/Jan Smuts Avenue intersection; so long an eyesore, it has taken this World Cup to improve this, and a veritable host of other things.

It now, at last, looks great!

A place called home but…H Bokaba writes:THE residents of the squatter camp at the old fruit and vegetable market certainly have a right to call it home.

But I do not agree with the sentiment that they are victims of verbal harassment. We hardly ever speak to them. We do not hate those people.

We know their plight but we have properties and we are against squatters dumping their refuse along Van Vuuren Street.

It is a fact that drugs are sold on the premises.

Their clients make u-turns in front of our properties some even feel free to just roll their zol and smoke right in front of our gates.

Their children play in Van Vuuren

Street, as they don’t have places of amusement.

They (children) are as naughty as any other kids.

They open our mail and throw papers around. If the people selling drugs are not residents of the market why are they not calling the relevant authorities?

The police do come but we are not certain whether they are doing their job or collecting bribes?

The municipality and the national government must deal with this issue because our houses are depreciating in value.

The municipality is also failing to: Clean that portion of the street ref no : 106959 and 1116-09/06/2010 and numerous letters send to city

parks bears testimony. We requested City of Joburg to build a retaining wall along Van Vuuren street. The storm water drain at the corner has not been attended to. I believe that we are paying rates according to the value of our properties and maybe that is why some of the residents sold their properties in time to avoid such conditions.

We are aware that it will take time before they will eventually be moved.

To compound our frustrations the offi ce of the speaker’s response is still outstanding and the offi ce of the mayor, city parks, roads department simply ignored letters and petitions sent to them.

Cops target vendorsKugelina writes from Sandown: I WITNESSED two police offi cers stuffi ng a vendor’s fl ags into the boot of their unmarked car (they were in full uniform) in Hamlin Street, Highlands North.

I had the distinct impression they were taking them for themselves - but this is just an assumption.

I stopped to speak to the vendor when they drove off and he said they usually give him a receipt so he can account to his boss for their loss but this time they didn’t.

I was very upset for him and told him that the next time he must take down the vehicle licence number. I do think a blind eye should be turned in instances like this during the World Cup.

It will be interesting to see if zero tolerance will continue after 11 July.

Horrible experience with dog haterBetty de Comarmond writes:THIS letter is written to the despicable man I had the misfortune to meet on 19 June.

I was travelling on 9th Road through Lombardy, just off Modderfontein Road, when I witnessed a beautiful German Shepherd being hit and run over by a taxi. I made a u-turn as I noticed in the rear view mirror that the injured animal was still alive. The taxi, obviously, did not stop. Some other Good Samaritans who witnessed the accident, also made a u-turn and followed me.

When we reached the poor animal, the owner of the dog, who lives nearby, emerged in his white Opel. I asked him to please take the dog to the nearest vet or SPCA as I could see the dog was in terrible pain. I had no idea where to go for help as I am not from the area. The owner refused, picked up the dog and handed him over to my son, who was with me at the time. My son asked the owner for his cell number. I cannot explain the trauma I went through while driving to fi nd help, with my son crying and screaming that the dog

was dying. After wasting much time, I managed to fi nd a vet when some local residents escorted me to the clinic. But it was too late. The injured animal died just minutes before I pulled up at the vet.

I have since tried to call the owner only to fi nd out that he had given my son a false number. You horrid man, whoever you are. Not willing to help in any way, you handed over your best friend to a complete stranger. People like you should not be allowed to own animals. But the wheel turns and your turn will come.

NOT NICE: Wolfgang and Marisa Rothbauer sent in this photo of the Sandton taxi rank. “The letter in the Chronicle (week ending 25 June), Gautrain stunning but Sandton leaves much to be desired, is spot on. This is evidence. We took the photo on Sunday with tourists walking around us.

It was definitely thereProudly Bafana writes:WELL done, you have perfectly summarised our feelings in your column last week,

Are the fl ags that offensive? As a proud new Bafana Bafana

supporter I was so excited to be blessed to have a ticket for Tuesday’s game in Bloemfontein.

But imagine my shock when I drove around the City of Mangaung

the weekend before the game and saw tons of bright fl ags, beanies, vuvuzelas, scarves and all sorts of supporters gear available for sale on every street corner by illegal traders!

What on earth has got into Joburg? It has lost the plot completely. Bloem looked like a carnival. Indeed you could feel it, it was there!

Help us find our daschundRobyn Hare writes:OUR black, miniature daschund, Roxy, has been wandering over the fence to the Kyalami race track for the last 13 years.

She refuses to keep a collar on, scraping it off on the fence, but has a chip under her skin inscribed with my details.

On race days, we normally put her into a courtyard, but on 8 May the lure of people and food

was apparently too strong and she burrowed out under the gate.

I think someone may have picked her up, thinking she was lost.

The track put out an announcement, we have called the SPCA in case she was taken there, to no avail.

I know that it’s now over a month, but if anyone picked her up or saw her, please contact me on 082-331-9548.

GIFT FOR THE POOR: The Sandton Muslim Jamaat (SMJ), and the Muslim community of Marlboro Gardens has distributed thousands of blankets to poor families in Setswetla informal settlement, the Lucky Duck care centre in Alexandra and to the homeless at traffi c lights around Marlboro. The SMJ and the community has run the winter warmth project for the past 15 years to help keep people warm during our cold winters.

New road a disasterYousuf Karrim writes:I READ an article in the Chronicle about the opening of a new road in Birnam.

I was hoping this ineffi cient design would be scrapped.

The problem here, as in many other instances in Joburg, is that you cannot have too many intersections too close to one another.

This new road cut through the once beautiful park is doing exactly this.

There is a far more effi cient manner in which this can be done.

I forwarded this to the Joburg Roads Agency two years ago before the construction of this road began.

But as usual it fell on deaf ears.Firstly, Corlett Drive requires

widening. Also, on either side of Corlett

Drive are several side roads and parts of Atholl Oaklands Drive which could be used for parking by turning them into one-ways.

Right turning is one of the biggest contributors to traffi c congestion.

This was explained to the person in charge of our roads and he could not understand how this causes congestion.

Embarrassing and frightening and we wonder why traffi c congestion cannot be resolved.

This new road still does not

address this major problem and is just adding another street with yet another ineffi cient intersection causing more problems.

The only way to eliminate right turning is to implement one way streets (required in Houghton, Killarney, Mayfair and many other areas, especially where a grid pattern exists).

If you live in this area, you will agree that our suburbs are packed with traffi c congestion and this new road does not resolve it.

What one does when designing a solution is fi nd out what the problem is fi rst, and then suggest a solution that addresses it.

Not what the agencies currently do, which is put in place outdated designs and ideas that exaggerate the problems, not address them.

The design concepts I suggest consider effi ciency.

In this way traffi c will not stand and will clear quickly such that these once peaceful suburbs can be rid of the congestion and noise.

Just as with the traffi c circle dilemma on the corner of Chester and Dorset roads, if a problem is not resolved with the correct solutions, it creates more problems which compound the problem.

Innovation drives effi ciency.

Proud to be a GautrainerLizelle Blignaut writes:I STARTED riding on the Gautrain from this week Tuesday and discovered there is no better way of travelling to the offi ce than the Gautrain way.

I absolutely love it. It defi nitely beats the frustration

of sitting in traffi c with yet another accident or set of traffi c lights out of order.

It takes me off the streets with all

the hot spots of hijacking or smash and grab.

I am not even talking about being pestered by all the beggars and roadside sellers, a problem that is quickly becoming a distant memory for me. I sincerely enjoy every minute of the total 12 minutes it takes from Rhodesfi eld station in Kempton Park to the Sandton station. And the best part is the Rhodesfi eld station is only 6km

away from my home in Boksburg. There I am, sitting on the

luxurious and spacious soft blue seats on board the Gautrain, secretly smiling at all the cars stuck on the roads while we whizz past at a comfortable 160 km/h.

And all of this for only R42 per day, plus parking of R9.50. Total cost for a traveller’s monthly pass: R1 124. Joy it brings me: priceless.

SANDTON CHRONICLE14 • Community Week ending 2 July 2010

Charities benefit from mallCHRONICLE REPORTERSANDTON City’s refurbishment project has helped to support a number of charities and communities.

Sharon Swain, Sandton City centre manager, said; “The internal refurbishment of the centre is nearly fi nished. Every usable fi tting has been set aside and matched to

requests from registered charities. Sandton City is proud of its contribution to the community.”

Since the recycling initiative started in 2009 six different charities have benefi ted.

Salvaged fl oor and ceiling tiles helped The Society for Animals in Distress, supporting its programme in nine townships in and around

Tembisa, educating over 14 000 children in animal care every year.

Avalon, which assists people with disabilities, used a consignment of fl oor tiles for its charity shop and residents living areas, while Hyde Park’s MaAfrika Tikkun, a charity that focuses on early development and life skills training, used the tiles, plumbing, bathroom and light

fi ttings for its Alexandra, Diepsloot and Orange Farm community facilities.

The Siyafunda Trust, a boarding school for Grade 4 to Grade 12 boys in Onderstepoort, also benefi ted from the tile salvaging exercise, as did a previously unusable ward for children with facial anomalies at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital,

thanks to the Smile Foundation, a non-profi t organisation that assists children with facial anomalies.

Services contacted the Sandton SPCA to ask how they could help.

Together with Fred Segers, and Kobus Stoop of Macsteel VRN which donated the steel, they designed and built traps that were

a welcome sight at the non-profi t organisation.

A pleased Inspector Steven Maila inspected the cages, which were built with pressure sensitive pads that closed the trap when activated.

He explained they often were called out to rescue dogs far too frightened for rescuers to get close to.

MATTHEW WOODPAUL Williams has taken his interest in racing cars to a higher level.

The Douglasdale resident owns two Alfa Romeos and is the national chairman of Alfa Romeo Owners of South Africa. Since 1972 he has been a member of a club that started at the Balalaika hotel but has since moved to Edenvale. There are eight clubs in the country.

But Williams said he couldn’t possibly own so many of these magnifi cent cars, and collected model versions. He currently owns about fi ve dozen. Williams showed the Chronicle a model of the village Brescia, Italy where, back in the 1920s, the town was the start and fi nish for the Alfa Romeo racecourse. Aside from numerous model versions of classic cars lined up on the cobblestone road, his toy village included miniature people sitting in cafés watching the cars, with minutely detailed extras such as a cart of potatoes in the tiny vegetable garden. Williams also owns a massive model train track. His pride and joy was his diverse Alfa Romeo collection, which he kept separate from the model village.

“I’ve been collecting these model cars for years. They’re not easy to fi nd. Some were expensive and had to be imported. Every year at the annual concourse meeting when our real cars are inspected for cleanliness and originality I put the models out on display.”

Williams owns an Alfa Romeo GTV and a 156 series and has also raced in his time. He spends his spare time on his village and train tracks.[email protected]

Steyn supplied Balje with a bag full of Blue Bull gear which was signed by the Bulls fl y-half.

CHRONICLE REPORTERMELROSE Arch is playing host to Portugal at Heart, a festival organised by the Consulate General of Portugal and the Portuguese Embassy.

The fair celebrates football and Portugal, showcasing the country’s historic links with South Africa, and its economic and cultural highlights.

It includes fashion shows, gastronomic fairs, classical music concerts and performances from Portuguese cultural groups.

The centrepiece is the Red Independent Heart, a sculpture by Joana Vasconcelos.

This iconic piece – symbolic of Portuguese pride and both modern and traditional – will be displayed throughout the festival.

The sculpture inspired the Portugal at Heart logo and slogan, Live Out Your Passion, created by designer Gabriel Abreu, who also created the World Cup logo.

“We wanted to support our team with activities that would best portray our country,” said Carlos Pereira Marques, Consul General for Portugal.

“Football is undoubtedly a sport that arouses great passion, and the Portuguese are known as passionate people.

“What better way to acknowledge this than by bringing an enormous

Portuguese heart and associating it with the best of what is produced in our country.”

Marques said the festival paid tribute to the generations of Luso-South Africans who represented the vibrant Portuguese community here.

It would present to them an image of a modern Portugal very different to the one their parents and grandparents knew.

An associated event is the Portuguese presence in the Africa and the East exhibition at Brenthurst library in Parktown

Feeding the poorCHRONICLE REPORTERNEARLY 10 000 food packets were distributed in a mammoth feeding scheme.

The B’nei B’rith charity welcomed the 2010 Johannesburg Mini Council to assist and on 5 June the fi rst team of councillors arrived to start their shift.

Armed with youth and determination they were shown the ropes and the hard work began.

Two shifts of councillors led by Mayor Maxine Gussenhoven sorted, poured, packed, sealed and stacked 9 750 packets in fi ve hours for delivery to the hungry in and around Johannesburg.

Each packet of dried food can

be cooked with a litre of water and feeds four children or two adults.

The ingredients were carefully selected to provide maximum nutrition. Aileen Benn from the All Nations Ministry runs a charity in Alexander and assisted.

“The work ethic among the children was fantastic and the fun and laughter was contagious in the packing room but they never strayed from the important task at hand,” said Benn

“And as I watched them I thought that if this is the calibre of youth in South Africa, our future leaders are going to be incredible,” added Benn.[email protected]

It’s time for the timekeepers

MATTHEW WOODFor those of you who enjoy comedy and the thrashing of the piano keys, you won’t want to miss out on the musical antics of Jonathan Roxmouth and Louis Zurnamer in Hats Off.

At Pieter Toerien’s Studio Theatre in Montecasino, the duo pays tribute to British comic songsters Michael Flanders and Donald Swann, reprising their classic tracks such as the G-nu song, Madeira M’Dear and Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud.

To keep the performance a little up-to-date and in context, Roxmouth and Zurnamer cracked jokes about Julius Malema, Kurt Darren, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang and Eskom between each classic track.

To bring the recital to life, the duo donned a different hat for each song. According to the theme of each song, the headgear included construction helmets, mortarboards, bonnets and a mitre.

The two comics took turns playing the piano, at times in unison.

Audience members were hysterical with laughter, as each song became more outrageous, tackling themes from thermodynamics to cannibalism. Lindsay Husted from Bryanston particularly enjoyed the show and praised the performance for its energy.

Neville Gordon from Sandton echoed her sentiments. “I loved it and I would recommend it to anyone”.

The performance runs until 1 August.[email protected]

JACQUES CLIFFORDNO WONDER divers jokingly refer to it as a treasure hunt.

Over the last 48 years Normalair Underwater Club’s annual Polar Bear Dive has produced some interesting fi nds.

“Members have emerged from the water with items such as mortar bombs, computers, shopping trolleys, fi rearms and ammunition, canoes, false teeth, and spectacles,” said Fick Booysen, chairman of the social diving club.

However, besides a bag of shotgun shells, this year’s plummet into the cold and murky depths of Emmarentia Dam did not yield anything as bizarre. According to Booysen one of the most memorable dives involved the discovery of a mannequin.

“Visibility beneath the water is almost zero and we basically have to feel our way around. One year a diver was doing exactly that and literally got to grips with a shop dummy’s hand. He thought he had come across a corpse and got the fright of his life!”

The Polar Bear Dive provides club members with an opportunity to train in low visibility conditions and also doubles as a community service as divers help to clean the dam.

“Despite the water temperature of between eight and 11 degrees Celsius at the

moment, the dive is extremely popular. There are prizes up for grabs for the most interesting fi nds, and participants are required to stay in the water for a minimum of 10 minutes to qualify.

“We set a maximum time limit of 30 minutes to prevent divers from suffering hypothermia. After the dive and prizegiving we always enjoy drinks and a braai.”

This year’s prizes, which included a long weekend on the south coast and a baited shark dive, were sponsored by African Dive Adventures, Ocean Basket, David John Makeup International, Volcano Pans, and Blue Wilderness.

Normalair’s clubhouse is situated on the banks of Emmarentia Dam. It boasts a cozy pub decorated with some neat memorabilia and members meet every Wednesday from 7pm.

The club hosts diving trips to destinations around Africa and offers dive courses to novices.

In addition the club participates in other sports such as underwater hockey and spear fi shing. Normalair is also one of the few organisations to offer scuba tank air fi lls. The club’s next scuba dive course takes place in September.

Mangena trophyKEBA MOTHOAGAETHE toddlers and soccer players of Alexandra Township have something to smile about.

More than 1000 people were present at Marlboro sports stadium for the 2010 Soccer Commemoration held by Gift of the Givers Foundation.

Warm clothing, blankets, food parcels and soccer kits were donated to a number of crèches and soccer clubs in Alexandra.

Gift of the Givers, a non-

governmental organisation involved in various initiatives intended to uplift disadvantaged communities in South Africa, organised the event in conjunction with Jacaranda FM and the Spectron group.

Alex Sheffi eld and Moroka Line football clubs, each recipients of a full soccer kit, thrilled the crowd in a mini-tournament where the U13, U15 and U17 teams battled it out for the Mike Mangena Trophy.

Mangena, a legendary footballer

during the 1980s, was on hand to present the trophy, won by Moroka Line. Thandi Shongwe of Gift of the Givers said, “Today there are no losers, everyone is a winner. This is a way that the people of Alexandra can enjoy some of the spirit of the World Cup.”

But, the two teams battled it out and Moroka Line Football Club were the overall winners who recieved the Mike Mangena trophy.[email protected]

Celebs walk the talkCHRONICLE REPORTERCELEBRITIES Elana Afrika and Mark Fish have signed up to walk 8km in the 702 Walk the Talk to raise funds for charity MaAfrika Tikkun.

The radio presenter and former soccer player will be part of the MaAfrika Tikkun Dream Team at the walk in July.

Elana and Mark have put their muscle behind the organisation’s project of raising funds for vulnerable children in several of Gauteng’s most impoverished

areas. MaAfrika Tikkun is a non government, non-profi t organisation that provides services such as early childhood and youth development, primary health care, feeding, and reaction and emergency relief to improve the lives of vulnerable children.

KATE HENRYIT IS not a sport. It is not pretty.

Krav Maga is a form of self-defence that teaches people how to defend themselves in realistic situations. There is no concept of fair play. To put it simply, anything goes. The only goal is survival.

Alan Mann, who runs the Elite Defence Academy class in Bryanston, has been actively practising Krav Maga since 2007, training under Des Brown. “I tried other martial arts but did not fi nd them very practical to real world situations. That’s when I discovered Krav Maga. It teaches people how to deal with armed assailants and has practical applications.”

During class, men and women practise kicking, punching, grappling, groundwork, close quarter combat and learning to disarm opponents. Mann also

conducts scenarios, such as ATM robberies and hijackings, so his students can learn how to apply what they have learnt.

One could be forgiven for thinking Krav Maga was simply an exercise in violence. But Mann explained it was much more. “The best form of defence is to be able to defuse a situation. If that fails, we teach people a basic self-defence particular to the South African situation.”

He emphasised this by praising two of his students who managed to make their antagonists back off before the situation came to blows.

Mann concluded, “People of all shapes and sizes can learn Krav Maga. It’s not about power, it’s about technique.”

Did you know? Krav Maga was founded by

Imi Lichtenfeld (Sde-Or). After escaping anti-Semitic authorities in Central Europe, he travelled to Israel (then Palestine) where he trained fi ghters in physical fi tness, swimming, wrestling, use of and defence against knife attacks. When the State of Israel was founded in 1948, he became chief instructor for physical fi tness and Krav Maga at the Israeli Defence Force’s school of combat fi tness. He continued to refi ne his method, later modifying it for civilian needs.
