Last month’s Orchid Mini-Auction was a great success. Lively bidding on excellently grown plants, enjoying delicious home prepared refreshments and the anticipation of the upcoming Summer growing season, made for an evening enjoyed by all who attended. I would like to thank all of the Sandpiper Orchid Society members who donated their plants and gave of their time in supporting and participating in the numerous aspects of running our successful Orchid Mini-Auction. Thanks again to everyone that helped…….Ron Ference (Auction Chair)

Spring Watering The general rule is to water once a week. However, orchids need to dry out slightly between waterings and then be soaked thoroughly. The old slogan says, “When in doubt, do without.” Should you experience shriveled and leathery leaves or pseudobulbs, a close inspection of the roots will be necessary to decipher the problem. Over watering will cause the roots to rot, while symptoms of under watering will be dehydrated roots. We recommend feeling the weight of the pot before watering, then again after it has been watered thoroughly. This will give you a better idea of whether it needs water or not. We do not suggest the finger test because you can only feel the top inch of the media which will not let you know the rest of the pot’s moisture content. Keep in mind clay pots will dry faster than plastic pots and orchids grown in sphagnum moss will tend to take longer to dry.

This variety of Neofinetia falcata is called "Koukakuden", which has purple in the peduncle and spurs. A beautiful contrast for these flowers. It is very fragrant, mostly at dusk and dawn, and is very easy to grow. Koukakuden is known to produce several spikes on a single growth. Light: This plant prefers medium to bright light conditions. In Japan, most of these plants are grown to the light that nature provides, giving the plants a rest in the winter months from bright long hours of light. Fuuran love to be grown outside, and can take fairly strong light as long as it is not direct for long periods of time. Filtered sunlight is always best.Temperature: Neofinetia can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, and go through seasonal changes in the wild. A daytime temp of 68 to 80 is ideal while night temperatures should drop to upper 50's or lower 60's for average year round conditions. As a general rule, neofinetia should be kept dry when temperatures are cold (50 degrees to 40 degrees is safe) and moist in warm conditions. Humidity: 50% or higher is ideal. Good air movement with high humidity is key for fast growth during the growing season (spring through fall). Water: For the growing season (spring through fall), water the

plants before the mix completely dries out. If you are growing using the traditional Japanese sphagnum moss mound, let the plant dry out completely between watering in the winter months when new growth and roots have stopped emerging.Fertilizer: Fertilize only during active growth which is generally spring through late fall. When giving a winter rest (cool temps) cut out fertilizer 100%.When Fuuran are in flower, fertilizer can also be cut out 100%.Flowering: Fuuran will generally bloom between April and August with June being the most common month. Each spike

can produce an average of 4 to 10 flowers. The flowers have an amazingly sweet fragrance that is most strong at dawn and dusk. Koukakuden is interesting because of the dark purple in the peduncle and spur.Repotting: The traditional Japanese sphagnum moss mound works very well as it holds moisture yet dries quickly. Air movement with adequate watering is key to growing Neofinetia well. If the humidity is high, they can be grown like Vandas in a basket bare root. Neofinetia also grow well in clay pots with bark.
