Garage sales can be a great way toget rid of clutter - and earn a little extracash - before you sell your home. Butmake sure the timing is right. Garagesales can take on a life of their own,and it might not be the best use of yourenergy right before putting your homeon the market. Follow these tips for asuccessful sale.1. Don't wait until the last minute.
You don't want to be scrambling tohold a garage sale the week before anopen house. Depending on how longyou've lived in the home and howmuch stuff you have to sell, planning a garage salecan demand a lot of time and energy.2. Get a permit. Most municipalities will require
you to obtain a special permit or license in order tohold a garage sale. The permits are often free orvery inexpensive, but still require you to registerwith the city.3. See if neighbors want to join in. You can turn
your garage sale into a block-wide event and luremore shoppers if you team up with neighbors. However, a permit may be necessary for eachhome owner, even if it's a group event.4. Schedule the sale. Sales on Saturdays and
Sundays will generate the most traffic, especially ifthe weather cooperates. Start the sale early, 8 a.m.or 9 a.m. is best, and be prepared for early birds.5. Advertise. Place an ad in free classified papers
and Web sites, and in your local newspapers. In-clude the dates, time, and address. Let the publicknow if certain types of items will be sold, such asbaby clothes, furniture, or weightlifting equipment. On the day of the sale, balloons and signs withprominent arrows will help to grab the attention ofpassersby.6. Price your goods. Layout everything that you
plan to sell, and attach prices with removable stick-
ers. Remember, garage sales are sup-posed to be bargains, so try to be objec-tive as you set prices. Assign simpleprices to your goods: 50 cents, 3 for $1,$5, $10, etc.7. If it's really junk, don't sell it. De-
cide what's worth selling and what's not.If it's really garbage, then throw it away.Broken appliances, for example, shouldbe tossed. (Know where a nearby elec-trical outlet is, in case a customer wantsto make sure something works.)8. Check for mistakes. Make sure that
items you want to keep don't acciden-tally end up in the garage sale pile.9. Create an organized display. Layout your
items by category, and display neatly so customersdon't have to dig through boxes.10. Stock up on bags and newspapers. People
who buy many small items will appreciate a bag tocarry their goods. Newspapers are handy for wrap-ping fragile items.11. Manage your money. Make a trip to the bank
to get ample change for your cashbox. Throughoutthe sale, keep a close eye on your cash; never leavethe cashbox unattended. It's smart to have one per-son who manages the money throughout the day, keeping a tally of what was purchased and for howmuch. Keep a calculator nearby.12. Prepare for your home sale. Donate the re-
maining stuff or sell it to a resale shop. Now thatall of your clutter is cleared out, it's time to focuson preparing your house for a successful sale!Reprinted from REALTOR® Magazine with

Dreaming of a vaca-tion at a relaxing spawhere you can un-wind in an oversizedsoaking tub or luxuri-ous steam shower? One way you can es-cape, and at the sametime enhance yourhome’s value, is toturn your master bath-room into an in-homeretreat. In fact, makingthe bathroom a placeto slow down andrelax is one of today’smost popular homeremodeling projects,as home owners seekto create the ultimatespa experience with-out leaving the com-forts of their own
homes.According to theAmerican StandardBathroom Habits Sur-vey, American con-sumers revealed thatthey would spend be-tween $2,500 and$7,500 to remodeland decorate theirbathrooms. And, 30percent indicated theywould be willing tospend more than$10,000 to converttheir space into a re-laxing sanctuary. It’swell worth it, and formore reasons thanjust chillin’ out. Bath-room remodels addvalue to your homeand can generate up
to a 90 percent returnon your investment. But, where to beginthe journey? Follow-ing are some bath-room tips and trendsto help you design abathroom that beck-ons you to relax andunwind.Wash the Day AwayHome owners areknocking down wallsto make their currentbathroom larger, more functional andcomfortable. Expand-ing the size of theroom allows homeowners to design “hisand hers” privatespace, such as sepa-rate showers, deepdouble sinks, dualmirrors and adjustablevanities. Today’s showersoffer more sophisti-cated features thanever before. Imaginestanding under a cas-cading rain-fallshower head, whilebeing massaged bysix shower streamsstrategically encirclingyou. Or, decompress
by taking astress-re-ducingsteamshower.Morethan ever, home ownersare opting for show-ers with automatictemperature controlsand frameless edgesthat present a “clean”look in the bathroom. For home ownersyearning for a relaxingbath, consider a neartotal emersionwhirlpool bathtub thatcontinuously re-circu-lates heated water. All of this down timecan be made evenmore enjoyable whilelistening to soothingmusic from a sur-round sound enter-tainment system orwatching a newplasma television —technology typicallyreserved for familygreat rooms, is grow-ing in popularity forthe master bathroom.Buck TraditionHome owners today
are includingfurniturelikechaiselounges,chairsand even
recliners forreading and relaxingin their remodeledbathrooms. Even fire-places are makingtheir way into masterbath space, to helpcomplete the warmand inviting haven.Include nontradi-tional furniture suchas an armoire for linenstorage or as an en-tertainment center inyour new bath. Morehome owners are se-lecting vintage piecesto use as vanities orfor decorative accentssuch as towel racks orsitting chairs. Tradi-tional-styled cabi-netry, made to looklike freestanding furni-ture, is growing inpopularity as well.Use Tile to CreateOne-of-a-Kind De-signsToday’s heated tile
flooring will take theedge off stepping outof your warm showeror bathtub. Brilliantlycolored tile floors nowcome in myriad de-signs and materials, allowing home own-ers to create personaldesigns. Not only are homeowners using tile onthe floor, but they arecreating unique de-signs for the showerand tub area. Con-sider using ocean col-ored glass tile tocreate a warm and re-laxing shower atmos-phere. To create thelook on a budget, many home ownersare opting to combineglass and porcelaintile to craft accents orborders that are moreaffordable.

Look for obvious signsof deterioration, damageor potential problems,Krafka Harkema ad-vises. Replace or repairworn or broken items be-fore they can lead tomore extensive or ex-pensive repair needs. These tips from
Kiplinger also may helplower utility bills: tuneup your heating system, reverse your ceiling fansto create an updraft that
pushes heated air downinto the room, help pre-vent ice dams by in-creasing attic insulationand repair missing ordamaged shingles.Increase curb appealOne quick way to help
improve energy effi-ciency and curb appeal isto install a new EN-
ERGY STAR-qualifiedentry door or storm door.Pella's new low-mainte-nance entry doors offermany styles designed forvirtually any budget.“Fiberglass entry door
systems offer the look ofa wood-grain door butwith the energy effi-ciency, and durabilityand low-maintenance offiberglass,” says SteveBrenizer, Pella productmarketing manager.Look for Pella Archi-
tect Series wood-grainfiberglass entry doors forexceptional energy effi-ciency. Or consider En-compass by Pella entrydoors for popular en-ergy-saving features andstyle options at a com-petitive price.“Choose a factory pre-
finished entry door for aconsistent look and tosave your precioustime,” Brenizer says.Inspect windows,
doorsWhen checking your
home's windows anddoors, inspect interiorand exterior finishesaround them. Is the paintor stain in good condi-tion? Signs of flakingand peeling or water
stains may mean that it'stime to refinish or re-place the unit.Next, check win-
dowsills and tracks fordirt and debris like sand, leaves, insects or pineneedles. Open windowsand doors to clean outthe area with a soft brushlike a dry paintbrush.Debris can hamper theairtight effectiveness andoverall performance ofdoors and windows.“Look at the weather
stripping around doorsand windows, reattachloose pieces, and replacethose that are ripped tohelp enhance yourhome's energy effi-ciency,” KrafkaHarkema adds. Finally, feel for uneven
sliding or sticking whenyou open and close awindow. Try using anon-oily lubricant, likeparaffin wax, on oppos-ing finishes to help itmove easier. If you are wondering if
your windows havepassed their expiration, consider these 10 signsit's time to replace them:1. Overall poor per-
formance - Opening orclosing is a difficult task
and air leaks in, out oraround the window2. In a fog - Condensa-
tion or fogging occursbetween panes of glass3. Chipping away -
Chipping, peeling or de-terioration on the finishon or around the window4. Singled out - You
have a home with single-pane windows, muchless energy efficient thandouble- or triple-paneoptions5. Water logged - Tell-
tale water stains remainon the leaky window orthe area around the win-dow (inside or out)6. Out-of-date - Re-
placement parts are hardto find or even non-exis-tent7. Energy hog - Energy
bills are on the rise, so
it's time to help increaseyour home's energy effi-ciency8. Draft dodger - You
can feel cold air or draftswhen sitting near thewindow ... and it's closed9. Shut in - Windows
are painted or nailed shut10. Simply put - Win-
dow won't open easily orwon't stay in place onceyou open itDon't suffer through
another winter with adrafty door or a windowthat whistles in the wind.Windows and doors canbe replaced year-round.To connect with yournearest representativesoffering Pella windowsor doors and for more in-formation, visit:www.pella.com/where-to-buy.
(BPT) - When you fi-nally tackle that homeimprovement projectyou've been planningfor a while, you'reprobably eager to getthe job done quickly, well and on-budget. In-juries can delay yourproject, and costmoney for medical ex-penses or even timelost from your job. It'simportant to take stepsto prevent injury. Before starting the
work on your nexthome improvementproject, consider thesesafety measures to helpkeep you injury-freeand your work accom-plished on time:* Stretch those mus-
cles - Home improve-ment projects oftenrequire you to usemuscles that you maynot exercise often.Give your entire bodya good stretch, fromyour head to your feet.Be sure to include yourfingers and hands, since you'll be usingthem frequently.* Appropriate cloth-
ing - Wearing the right
clothing for your proj-ect helps to protect youfrom scrapes, contactwith harmful chemicalsand other injuries.Closed-toed shoes, work gloves, a hat orhard helmet, long-sleeved shirts andheavy pants are all agood start. Also, re-move any jewelry andtie long hair back toavoid getting some-thing caught in ma-chinery.* Eliminate muscle
strain - Fastening dry-wall with nails andscrews, sawing wood, painting large walls -your wrists will besubject to a lot ofstrain, which can easilyresult in pain after along day of work.Wearing the IMAKSmartGlove encour-ages the hand and wristto remain in a neutralposition - reducing theamount of strainingmovement, and hasflexible support for thefull use of your hand. This SmartGlove isalso good for carpaltunnel syndrome,
arthritis, tendonitis, hand fatigue and otherwrist and hand pain. The material is a wash-able cotton blend foreasy care.* Wear eye and ear
protection - Safetygoggles and ear plugsare two tools you, andanyone around yourwork area, should bewearing while you'reworking on your proj-ect. Safety gogglescome in handy when
sawdust is flyingthrough the air, and earplugs are recom-mended when usingany type of machinery.* Take breaks - Make
certain that your sched-ule includes breakswhere you can sitdown, grab a drink andrest for 15 minutes. Ifyou're working on aproject in warmweather, schedulebreaks more frequentlyand drink plenty of
water. Use the time toalso stretch your mus-cles, keeping them aslimber as possiblewhile you continue towork. Don't overexertyourself attempting toget the project done ina shorter amount oftime. Your body willwork better and longerwith less pain at aslower pace, and whenthe project is com-pleted, you'll be able toenjoy the results of
your work in comfort.Protect yourself
while working on yourDIY home improve-ment project, so thatyou'll be able to ac-complish the project inthe time you sched-uled, without any in-juries to slow youdown. Visit imakprod-ucts.com to learn moreabout protecting yourhands and wrists frompain.
