true/false questions to testyour electrical IQ:1. If lights flicker or dim
repeatedly, you should callan electrician. TRUE. "Anytime you're
getting flickering or dim-ming lights, there is aproblem and you shouldcall your electrician," saidDouglas Sutton, Sr., presi-dent of Sutton Siding andRemodeling in Springfield,Ill. "Power outages due topower line accidents, strong wind, storms or ex-treme heat can cause briefinterruptions. Customerscan call their power com-pany to find out details onthe situation, or checktheir circuit boxes forthose outages. But flicker-ing or dimming lights sig-nifies an overload, and aprofessional should becontacted." You shouldalso call your electrician ifyou are constantly reset-ting circuit breakers orchanging fuses, smell
burning electricity or needto replace faulty wiring. 2. It’s cheaper to leave
fluorescent lights on whenexiting a room than it is toturn them back on whenyou return.FALSE. This is a com-
monly held belief, basedon the erroneous notionthat fluorescent bulbs usea lot of power to getstarted. While it is true thata compact fluorescentbulb does require a briefsurge when switched on, itworks out to be around thesame amount of energy asfive seconds of normaluse, according to the Envi-ronmental ProtectionAgency (EPA). So turningthe lights off for more thanfive seconds will savemore energy than leavingthem on.2. House wiring never
needs replacing.FALSE. Depending on
the amount of use, insula-tion on house wires canbecome frayed or broken, creating a fire hazard. Ifyou have any doubts
about your wiring, have aqualified electrician per-form a complete inspec-tion. Houses built between1965 and 1973, in particu-lar, are at risk becausemany were built with alu-minum wiring, which theU.S. Consumer ProductSafety Commission says is55 times more likely toreach “fire hazard condi-tions” than regular copperwire. 3. A circuit breaker is not
designed to protectagainst a ground fault.TRUE. Circuit breakers
are designed to protectagainst high levels of elec-trical current caused by ashort circuit. Ground FaultCircuit Interrupters (GFCIs)protect againstground faults, when cur-
rent leaking from an appli-ance goes to groundthrough a person touchingthe appliance. Even asmall amount of currentpassing through a personthis way can be lethal; aGFCI will trip if there’s aground fault, whereas a
circuit breaker won’t.4. A two-parter: Com-
puter screen savers saveenergy, and your com-puter will last longer if youleave it on all day, insteadof shutting it off whenyou’re not using it.FALSE AND FALSE.
Screen savers only savescreens, not energy. If youwant to save energy, turnthe monitor off. In fact, theEPA recommends you turnthe computer off, too, ifyou aren’t going to use itwithin a half hour. Theyclaim the lifetime of thehard disc is limited by use, rather than start-ups.5. You can damage a
power tool by using thewrong size extension cord.TRUE. If your electric
lawn mower, hedge trim-mer, or leaf blower doesn’tget enough power, eitherbecause the extensioncord is too thin or too longto deliver it, it can damageand eventually destroy themotor. Also, overloadingan extension cord cancause a fire or shock haz-
ard. Be sure to use a cordrated to provide the properamperage the tool re-quires, listed on the tool. Remember, when deal-
ing with electrical issues inyour home, safety shouldbe your number one prior-ity. “We’ve seen homeowners put themselves indangerous situations bythinking they could do ajob cheaper by them-selves,” said FrankMalpere, Jr., owner/presi-dent of Quality Buildingand Remodeling in Effort,Pa. “If it’s more thanchanging a light bulb, calla professional. Or take ahow-to class at a localcommunity college.”Just a little electrical
knowledge can go a longway. For more informationand tips, contact theMoore County HomeBuilders Association at(910)944-2992 or visit on-line at www.mchba.com.
