“Called to Missionary Disciples” is our teaching in RCIA this week. This teaching comes from

Luke’s Gospel, Ch. 1 & 4. This Gospel is often called the Gospel of prayer, of the poor and the

outcasts. Luke teaches us that it is our religious duty to share our blessings with the poor. He

tells those who are well off that they have a moral obligation to share their wealth with those who have nothing.

Many times we look in our neighborhood, in our state and country and beyond and try to find meaningful ways to

share with those in need without becoming overwhelmed. Sometimes we become frustrated at the way our society

wastes so much money on wars, bureaucracy and overspending. We, too, become accustomed to shopping and

overbuying and accumulating so much stuff that we have little or no more space to put these things. Even sadder is

our inability to have space left for prayer or discernment of God’s plan for us.

We have to take heart in knowing and believing that God guides history according to his plan and we are, at best,

instruments of the Holy Spirit. Jesus challenges us to missionary discipleship. He is the one on whom the Spirit of

the Lord comes to at the very beginning of his public ministry. Jesus is the sole agent of the Holy Spirit throughout

his ministry.

Because Jesus is concerned for the poor, the homeless, the prisoners, those in blindness, we, too, must be con-

cerned for them. Jesus reaches out to everyone, so we must do the same if we want to claim a relationship with

him. The power of the Spirit fills Jesus’ teaching with authority. Jesus’ role as teacher is crucial to his mission.

We, too, are led on our mission by the power of the Holy Spirit. We have nothing to fear because Jesus is with us!

He guides us to those in need and all we have to do is respond. Our lives must be lives of prayer so that we can

recognize where he wants us to help.

Every Sunday in Mass, we pray for unity and peace. It will only come if we, as Jesus’ followers, take up his word

as our own. We have been anointed to bring the good news to the poor, to free people from their oppression, to

share our blessings with those around us. This isn’t an optional choice we can do or not do if we feel like it. We

were baptized for this. What a gift Jesus and his Church have honored us with. We pray we can live up to his con-

fidence in us!

We invite adults who would like to be Baptized, Confirmed or make their First Communion to come to RCIA. We

meet each Wednesday evening from 7-9 pm in the Religious Education Center. We also invite those who want to

prepare for marriage in the Church to come to RCIA. Children ages 3-13 may come to a journey of faith called

RCIC to prepare for Baptism. You may call the number listed on the bulletin cover for questions you may have

about RCIA.

—————————————————————–—- 3 ———————————————————————

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: Ostensibly, the Gospel passage we hear today was placed at

the beginning of Ordinary Time because it comes at the beginning of John’s Gospel However, its placement a

week after the feast of the Baptism of the Lord is also appropriate, for this passage is all about conversion.

The miracle Jesus accomplished at the wedding at Cana converted water into wine, but also converted the

hearts and minds of his disciples, who were still coming to an understanding of this man they called Rabbi

(Teacher) and Messiah. Isaiah’s poetry celebrates the conversion of the holy city and its people from defeated

and desolate to victorious and vindicated, even using the language of a wedding ceremony to describe the joy

and promise of God’s care. This wedding reception at Cana is Jesus’ first recorded meal with this disciples.

At their last meal, he used water from similar jars to wash his disciples’ feet as a model of service, then

changed wine into his Blood. In Jesus, the ordinary is converted into something new, something greater,

something glorious. May our own continual conversion, expressed in the spiritual gifts we have received, be

as well.

How has your world been converted through the workings of our Lord?

Prayer for the Synod:

Adsumus Sancte Spiritus

Every session of the Second Vatican Council began with

the prayer Adsumus Sancte Spiritus, the first word of the

original Latin, meaning, “We stand before You, Holy

Spirit.” As we embrace this Synodal Process, the follow-

ing prayer invites the Holy Spirit to be at work in us so

that we may be a community and a people of grace.

We stand before You, Holy Spirit,

as we gather together in Your name.

With You alone to guide us,

make Yourself at home in our hearts;

Teach us the way we must go

and how we are to pursue it.

We are weak and sinful;

do not let us promote disorder.

Do not let ignorance lead us down the

wrong path nor partiality influence our actions.

Let us find in You our unity

so that we may journey together to eternal life

and not stray from the way of truth

and what is right.

All this we ask of You,

who are at work in every place and time,

in the communion of the Father and the Son,

forever and ever. Amen.
