Many people are filled with high aspirations at the beginning of a brand new year. Numerous students confidently aspire for maintaining a better grade point average, while some people proclaim New Year resolutions in earnest, by trying to better themselves throughout the year. I personally try maintaining a high level of confidence when it comes to year long proclamations, knowing that there are many challenges and unknown variables

that life loves to throw your way. Like many people, I’ve also fellen short of many of these self-set goals. A year is a long time; how does one maintain the willpower to keep their eye on the prize while opting out would be so much easier? I’d like to think that a moderate amount of planning, self discipline, and continuous elation can help your achieve anything. Pardon my cheesy optimism, but when I planned Humans V.S. Zombies this past semester, I had to dedicate a large part of myself to its development. Many of my personal evenings fell victim to its extraneous maintenance, but I knew the final product would be entirely worth the dedication. At the end, we had 500+ students sign up and we’ve been able to establish a long-standing tradition at Texas State. Whatever it is you’re hoping to achieve at the beginning of the new year, I say maintain that energy and bear the fruits of your labor when the proper time has come!

Sam, What’s your favorite part of winter?

My favorite part about winter has got to be, without doubt, less sweating. I love being able to pile on the layers--scarves, tights, ponchos (don’t judge)--without dripping, Shaq-like, within � ve minutes of step-ping outside. Guys somehow manage to look hotter (zing!) post-perspiration. Guys and I do not have that in common.

Katie, if you could be on a game show then which one would it be?

I am a huge fan of game shows;they always seem to amaze me with all the useless facts that the contestants seem to know. � at is why the game show I would choose to be on would be Cash Cab! I am always playing the game when it comes on TV to see how much money I could win if it was me. I seem to be full of random and odd facts, and I hope that I end up on it and I visit New York.

Ngoc, When should I start planning for Spring Break? - Whitney Swales

It’s never too early to plan for Spring Break! Starting right now would give you plenty of time to research all the places you can go. At this time you can get the best prices for hotels and beach houses. Once you get your research on lock, you can start asking your friends to make the trip with you. By February you will have your trip planned rather than planning it all last minute! Have fun guys!

Ryan, With a new semester, what are you looking forward to the most?

2012 is going to bring a lot of new things. For starters I’m really stoked to road trip to the East Coast this summer. I’ll be checking out Washington DC and possibly traveling to Cambodia for a student internship credit. I also turn 21 in April. I’ve already started a list of clubs and bars to explore when the clock strikes midnight. Can’t wait to RAGE.

t � rst glance, it would be easy for a stranger to stick Mandie in the “bimbo” box. Five feet tall, probably 95 lbs soaking wet, and blessed with classic

blonde-haired, blue-eyed, all-American good looks, it’s understandable the jealousy the tiny beauty would inspire. But unfortunately for the haters, the second you were to meet her, you’d be proved completely wrong. Not only is the 22-year-old Texas State student smart (she’s majoring in psychology with a minor in biology and counts bio-engineering plants as one of her hobbies), but she’s also irresistibly nice with a wicked sense of humor and a sur-prising tattoo collection. Oh, and she could probably kick your ass. (Yes, you heard that right—she does martial arts.)

Study in contrasts Spend � ve minutes with the bundle of en-ergy that is Mandie Wilson, and you’ll realize there’s no simple way to describe our cover girl except, perhaps, to say just that: � ere’s no easy way to describe her. Well, maybe you could say she’s a walking contradiction: A Texas native and self-described “country girl” who has done barrel racing and used to ride horses, she also spent some time (in � ve-inch heels, for the record) as a club promoter in downtown Houston. She was a high school cheerleader and also the captain of her high school wrestling team. (See aforementioned ass-kicking comment.) She cites her favorite book as Gerald N. Callahan’s Faith, Madness and Spontaneous Human Combustion: What Immunology Can Teach Us About Self-Percep-tion and her favorite movie as Gremlins. She paints and sketches in her free time, but she also has a passion for neuroscience and bot-any. She loves chocolate and margaritas, but she runs at least seven miles most days. She uses (mild) profanity in one paragraph of her

emails, and casually tosses Latin phrases into the next. She’s down-to-earth, but she has big dreams. “I don’t see why you have to sacri� ce your passions to � t in an easily readable box,” she says. Let that be a lesson to us all.

Back in the dayIt seems redundant, but eclecticism is the theme of her story (which not only makes her interesting to talk to, but nearly impossible to write about, by the way), and it’s the perfect word to describe her past as well. As noted above, in high school she was both a varsity cheerleader and the captain of the wrestling team, which is especially interesting since most wouldn’t imagine the small, peppy girl with the giant smile whose instructing you to Be aggres-sive, be, be aggressive would be the same one you’d be circling with on the mat before a grapple that would most likely end up with her pinning you down for a one, two, three count. In addition to her athletic past in high school, she has also had quite an interesting employ-ment history. Her entry photo, a picture she readily admits is “head-on-boobs” (and garnered her over � ve thousand votes in the contest), can be explained by one of her past jobs. “I’m generally a ‘good girl’ but I came o� as pretty wild when I worked as a promoter for various clubs in Houston,” she explains. And it’s true that it’s easy to imagine peo-ple � ocking into clubs when approached by such a friendly and outgoing girl, but it wasn’t the perfect scenario for Mandie. “It was awesome when you had a good conversation with people you were meet-ing, but it was lousy when you bumped

into creeps. � e hours were awful but the pay was good. All in all it wasn’t really worth it, it was always downtown and it’s not exactly the most crime-free part.” (Apparently even high school wrestling doesn’t ensure safety on the dirty streets.) Alongside that job, Mandie had one at a tanning salon, a gig that illustrates her hard-working tendencies as she worked her way up from what was essentially “cleaner of ass sweat” to manager, even overseeing the ownership change. Her resume also demon-strates that she took the time to work in the unpaid arena (that would be something called philanthropy, kids) with her work as a hostess for Riders for Readers, an organization that pairs equestrian activities with fundraising for schools.

t � rst glance, it would be easy for a stranger to stick Mandie in the “bimbo” box. Five feet tall, probably 95 lbs soaking wet, and blessed with classic

blonde-haired, blue-eyed, all-American good looks, it’s understandable the jealousy the tiny beauty would inspire. But unfortunately for the haters, the second you were to meet her, you’d be proved completely wrong. Not only is the 22-year-old Texas State student smart (she’s majoring in psychology with a minor in biology and counts bio-engineering plants as one of her hobbies), but she’s also irresistibly nice with a wicked sense of humor and a sur-prising tattoo collection. Oh, and she could probably kick your ass. (Yes, you heard that right—she does martial arts.)

Study in contrasts Spend � ve minutes with the bundle of en-ergy that is Mandie Wilson, and you’ll realize there’s no simple way to describe our cover girl except, perhaps, to say just that: � ere’s no easy way to describe her. Well, maybe you could say she’s a walking contradiction: A Texas native and self-described “country girl” who has done barrel racing and used to ride horses, she also spent some time (in � ve-inch heels, for the record) as a club promoter in downtown Houston. She was a high school cheerleader and also the captain of her high school wrestling team. (See aforementioned ass-kicking comment.) She cites her favorite book as Gerald N. Callahan’s Faith, Madness and Spontaneous Human Combustion: What Immunology Can Teach Us About Self-Percep-tion and her favorite movie as Gremlins. She paints and sketches in her free time, but she also has a passion for neuroscience and bot-any. She loves chocolate and margaritas, but she runs at least seven miles most days. She uses (mild) profanity in one paragraph of her

emails, and casually tosses Latin phrases into the next. She’s down-to-earth, but she has big dreams. “I don’t see why you have to sacri� ce your passions to � t in an easily readable box,” she says. Let that be a lesson to us all.

Back in the dayIt seems redundant, but eclecticism is the theme of her story (which not only makes her interesting to talk to, but nearly impossible to write about, by the way), and it’s the perfect word to describe her past as well. As noted above, in high school she was both a varsity cheerleader and the captain of the wrestling team, which is especially interesting since most wouldn’t imagine the small, peppy girl with the giant smile whose instructing you to Be aggres-sive, be, be aggressive would be the same one you’d be circling with on the mat before a grapple that would most likely end up with her pinning you down for a one, two, three count. In addition to her athletic past in high school, she has also had quite an interesting employ-ment history. Her entry photo, a picture she readily admits is “head-on-boobs” (and garnered her over � ve thousand votes in the contest), can be explained by one of her past jobs. “I’m generally a ‘good girl’ but I came o� as pretty wild when I worked as a promoter for various clubs in Houston,” she explains. And it’s true that it’s easy to imagine peo-ple � ocking into clubs when approached by such a friendly and outgoing girl, but it wasn’t the perfect scenario for Mandie. “It was awesome when you had a good conversation with people you were meet-ing, but it was lousy when you bumped

into creeps. � e hours were awful but the pay was good. All in all it wasn’t really worth it, it was always downtown and it’s not exactly the most crime-free part.” (Apparently even high school wrestling doesn’t ensure safety on the dirty streets.) Alongside that job, Mandie had one at a tanning salon, a gig that illustrates her hard-working tendencies as she worked her way up from what was essentially “cleaner of ass sweat” to manager, even overseeing the ownership change. Her resume also demon-strates that she took the time to work in the unpaid arena (that would be something called philanthropy, kids) with her work as a hostess for Riders for Readers, an organization that pairs equestrian activities with fundraising for schools.

“I really appreciated how it taught me about humility and charity,” she says. “Half the time I was dressed classy and the other half I was in rags getting horse poo and mud o� things; it didn’t really matter because I knew I was con-tributing to an important cause. Education is so important.” And it’s not hard to imagine someone who waxes nostalgic about the times of celebrity scien-tists like Albert Einstein and Ma-rie Curie and dreams of becoming a professor prioritizing education.

Flower ChildLet it be known that it’s not all work and no play for Mandie, but when she lists her hobbies, while all are interesting and some are understandable, some…well, some are just unexpected—bio-engineering plants, for example. “� e reason I’m into bio-engi-neering glowing plants isn’t be-cause I’ve watched Avatar too many times,” she promises. “I want to make the world a beauti-ful place and make people smile—who doesn’t love � owers?—but I know how to make it a major eco-nomical enterprise that wouldn’t hurt the environment.” And the girl is pure encyclo-pedia on the subject, explaining patiently that there are several ways to generate luminosity in plants involving GFP’s (that’s green � uorescent proteins), gold particles and gene insertion, and that when it hits marketable sta-tus it will make a huge mark on what she says is a 36 billion dollar ornamental plant industry. “� ere are several plants and plant-like organisms that already are luminescent; I think the key however will be gene-insertion and ampli� cation of gene expres-sion,” she says con� dently in a language we’ll dub Braniac.Yeah…just go with it.

And the winner is…Like you wouldn’t typically expect a cover girl to be able to read an EEG (that’s Electroencephalog-raphy—obviously) report, you wouldn’t typically expect someone who dabbles in neuroscience to enter a cover girl contest. “To be honest, I entered the contest on a whim; I didn’t have

any expectations,” she says, ex-plaining that she told a few friends about it sheepishly. But as votes came in slowly at � rst, by the second day they were pouring in, and the cover girl dream became a potential reality as the idea that winning was achievable sunk in. “I think I thought it would be neat,” she explains. “I’m a pret-ty odd girl. I’ve got some stories and characteristics you wouldn’t expect to be in one person, and I kind of hope that makes someone else who feels atypical feel like they’re special too.”

On the HorizonWith a million di� erent things going on in the present and a past that’s just as diversi� ed, it’d be dif-� cult or nearly impossible to guess our cover girl’s plans for the future (WWE star…Nobel Prize-win-ner…rabbit trainer…?), and when asked, Mandie seems to have about as vague an idea. “I’m just going to roll with the punches and see how my experi-ences mold me; I like general plans but I have a lot more living to do,” she says. “I just want to be happy and explore life. I aim to be suc-cessful but I wouldn’t mind making the world a little more beautiful…I want to help others by sharing knowledge.” Her undergraduate degree just � nished o� , with grad school plans and countless aspirations, it’s hard to imagine where she’ll end up in � ve, 10 or 15 years, but while she describes her dream job as profes-sor of psychology or biology, there is one career she mentions that seems like the perfect � t. “I always thought it would be cool to have a TV show called Sexy Science,” she reveals. “It would talk about science news and how things work… sort of like Bill Nye but more MANswers. I wouldn’t mind being the hostess on that.” But while she has big dreams for the future, as of press time she was perfectly content with enjoy-ing the present. “My brain is so fried from � nals and the stress of graduating and starting a new job,” she admits. “I can’t wait for New Year’s so I can let my hair down.”

What was your inspiration for decorating your room?I am such a girly girl and I love cheetah print, so I combined the two ideas and came up with the color scheme. I am obsessed with fashion and anything having to do with makeup or other girly things, so that was part of the inspiration too.

What’s one thing you wouldn’t live without in your apartment?My huge closet! I love taking people upstairs and showcasing my wardrobe. It is by far my favorite thing to show people.

How do you like living on your own?I really love it! My roommates are amazing! They are also my sorority sisters, so we are always having fun at the house and we love having our sisters over!

What is one item in your room that best describes you?I love my “be your own kind of beautiful” picture frame above my door. It just reminds me to embrace the person that I am.

What do you like best about living away from your parents?I don’t exactly like living away from my parents, because I am really close to my family, but I do love starting my life on my own. It feels like a new chapter in my life, so it’s really exciting that I get to share it with my friends.

How do you like living with roommates?I honestly couldn’t have asked for better roommates. I am constantly laughing and having a good time with them. It’s so nice to come home to a couple of goofballs. I know I will always come home smiling.

How close are you to campus? Do you like that?I am about 10 minutes away from campus. I like it because it is close enough to where it isn’t ever a hassle getting to school on time, but it is far enough away to where we have privacy.

What is one thing you would decorate differently next year?I would really like to paint my room. I go all out on styling, so I would like for my space to be completely finished.
