Congratulations to Dr. C. James Schmidt on his decade of service to our School, and 17 years of service to San Jose State University. His colleagues and former students are grateful for the many ways he has contributed to teaching, service, and scholarship within the profession. We wish him all the best in his retirement.

Dr. Schmidt’s career began in a public library in Flint, Michigan in 1963. Later, he transitioned to leadership positions with several academic libraries, including Southwest Texas State University, Ohio State University, SUNY Albany, and Brown University. He also served as Director of the Research Libraries Information Network in Stanford, CA.

Dr. Schmidt came to SJSU in 1992, serving as a University Librarian for 7 years before becoming a full-time faculty member for our School. He taught courses on academic librarianship, intellectual freedom, and information policies in a globalized information society. His research has focused primarily on intellectual freedom. He is the former chair of the Intellectual Freedom Committee for the Association of College and Research Libraries, and he received the Robert B. Downs award for outstanding contribution to the cause of intellectual freedom in 1991.

In Memory of Connie Costantino Thank You

Please join with us in honoring SLIS faculty member Connie Costantino and celebrating her tireless efforts to educate future librarians and improve library services around the world. She joined the SLIS faculty in 2004, and prior to that spent more than 30 years as a school, public, and academic librarian.

Dr. Costantino was dedicated to helping new librarians and library school students on their path to success. This commitment was evident in her teaching and advising with our School over the last four years, as well as in her role as Chair of the Mentoring Committee for the California Library Association. Her many grateful students, as well as the individuals she mentored, will form a critical part of her enduring legacy.

Dr. Costantino was also passionate about improving library services in our nation and around the world. In addition to her decades of service as a school, public and academic librarian, Dr. Costantino did consulting work for libraries in Mexico City and Nairobi, Kenya. She taught courses on international librarianship, as well as instructional design and information management, and she invested her energies to serve on national committees focused on international librarianship issues.

The newly established Connie Costantino Scholarship Fund honors her family’s wish to remember her legacy and provide scholarships to future SLIS students. For information regarding contributions, please email Brenda Lamb at [email protected] or contribute online via the School’s web site.

Through her relentless efforts and support SLIS became a stronger and more credible force in the College and University.

Dr. Conry’s accomplishments include the 2001-2002 President’s Distinguished Service Award. She also served on the Board of General Studies and was involved with the preparations for the Western Accreditation for Schools and Colleges study and report, which ended in the University’s re-accreditation.

CASA College Award

Outstanding Professor

of the Year

Debra Hansen

Dr. Debra Hansen received her Ph.D. from the University of California at Irvine. She also holds a M.L.I.S. from UCLA and a M.A. from CSU Fullerton. She joined San José State University in 1989. Previously she was an instructor in History and has worked as a curator, librarian, archivist, editor and indexer. Dr. Hansen began teaching classes on-site and gradually moved to an on-line format; she led a team that developed guidelines and standards for teaching in an on-line environment. Her teaching evaluations are exceptional. She is the School’s lead peer reviewer for more than 100 part-time faculty. She similarly coordinates the foundational required course and works with more than 25 faculty each term to ensure consistency in content and standards. The School sponsors a biennial retreat for all faculty to enhance pedagogical and technological abilities. More than 100 faculty attend, from around the world, at their own expense. Dr. Hansen is the co-lead on the pedagogical component of the institute and the evaluations are exceptional. In the School, Dr. Hansen has served on the School Leadership Coordinating Team, as co-chair of the Curriculum and Program Development Committee. She played a critical role in the development of a new master’s degree in archives and records administration. Dr. Hansen advises more than 120 graduate students and works with small groups of 15 students each term to assess their competence in addressing the School’s program goals through an electronic portfolio. She also sponsors the Society of American Archivists’ student chapter. Dr. Hansen has written extensively on the intersection of feminization and professionalization in librarianship and the effects of these forces on the development of California and Western U.S. libraries and archives. These important scholarly activities inform her teaching, her advising and her supervision of graduate students. In the words of one of her colleagues: “Dr. Hansen is recognized as a leading scholar in her area of research. Her service to the School and University is also exemplary. She is an excellent mentor for new faculty. She has done an outstanding job in curriculum development, evaluating part-time faculty and organizing the faculty biennial institute. In sum, she does high quality work, year after year.”
