Winning   their   last   3  out  of  4  games,  with  a  5-‐3  record   the   Gators   head   into   the   new   year   with  something   to  prove.  “Our   last   three  games  have  been  a   by-‐product   of   our   commitment   to   playing   team  defense,   which   has   resulted   in   some   outstanding  defensive  numbers,”  said  head  coach  Joaquin  Wallace.  At   present,   the   Gators   are   playing   their   best  basketball  of  the  young  season  and  with  their  eyes  on  the   conference   tournament,   the   need   to   continue   to  grow   and   get   better   is   essential   in   their   quest   for  postseason  play.

Gators end preseason with winning record

The   Gators   `irst   goal   was   to   have   a   quality  preseason   against   some   outstanding   opponents   and  both  were  accomplished!  With   regional  rankings  and  records   critical,   the   scheduling   of   three   Pac   West  Conference   opponents   was   important.   The   Gators  ended   the   preseason   3-‐1,   while   being   undefeated  against   Pac  West   opponents.   Coach  Wallace   believes  going  3  and  0  Against  Pac  West  opponents  is  essential  in   the   journey   in   reaching   both   the   Post   Season  Conference   tournament   as   well   as   the   NCAA  Regionals.

In  Coach  Wallace’s  eight  years  as  head  coach,  the  Gators  have  had  two  wins  against  Division  I  opponents:

1.University  of  Paci@ic,  2008-‐2009  2.University  of  Nevada  Reno  2012-‐2013

I   learned   that  now  everyone  knows  my  style  of  play  and  I  can't   just   go  out  there  thinking  it  will  be  easy  for  me  to  do  what  I  do  best.  Now  I  have  to  become  more  versatile   so  that  my  opponents  won't   be  able   to  say  I  only  do  one  thing.  I  have  to  stay  consistent  with  improving  my  game.

If  you  had  to  describe  the  perfect  game,  what  would  it  consist  of?The  perfect  game  would  be  all  of  my  teammates  contributing  to  a  win.  Winning  our  bench  points  free  throw  percentage  everything.  Personally  I   would   want   a   triple   double   points   rebounds   and   either   steals   or  assists.

To  date,  what  is  your  most  memorable  experience  while  playing  at  San  Francisco  State? When  we  beat   Pomona   at   their  house.  Being  a   nationally  ranked  team  that  was  the   `irst   time  we   beat  an   opponent  of  that  standard.  It   felt   so  good  when  that  buzzer  went  off  and  we  all  jumped  in  joy.

What  are  your  personal  goals  and  team  goals  this  season? My  personal  goal  is  to  be  all  conference  and  average  a  double  double.  As  a   team   I   want   to   `inish   top   four   in   the   conference   and   make   it   to  regionals.

What   is   the   biggest   thing   that   you   have   learned   from   playing  basketball  at  San  Francisco  State  University?I   learned   that  the   only  way  to  get   the  results  you  want  is  to  put   in  the  work.  It  won't  be  handed  to  you.

What  will   you  take  away   from  your   experience   of   playing  under  Coach  Wallace? So   many   things   he   has   taught   me   but   the   biggest   one   is   never   be  complacent.   Don't   be   happy  with  what   you   have   always   strive   to   be  better  then  before.

In 2011-2012, just her first season as a Gator, Shokoor recorded 5 double-doubles including three straight (Jan. 26 through Feb. 3). She scored a season high 14 points versus Cal St. Monterey Bay and grabbed a season high 17 rebounds twice (versus Sonoma State and Cal State L.A.). She averaged 5.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.0 blocked shots per game while shooting 45% from the field and blocking 27 shots including four at Cal State Stanislaus.

Farah,   as   sophomore   what   is   the   biggest   lesson   learned   from   your  freshman  year?

Wallace WisdomThe  importance  of  scouting  reports

Failure  to  Prepare  is  Preparing  to  Fail  -‐  John  Wooden

Prior   to  me   becoming   a   college   coach,   I   had   the   opportunity   of  being  the  founder  and  Executive  Director  of  a  not-‐for-‐pro`it  organization.  Even  before  that,  while  completing  my  Masters  Degree  in  Marketing,  one  of  the  quotes  or  phrases  that  I  remembered  was  “Without  a  road  map  any  road  will  get  you  there.”

With   that   being   said,   I   have   been   a   `irm   believer   that   this   same  philosophy  is  paramount  in  preparing  for  an  upcoming  opponent  or  even  preparing   your   own   team.   Therefore,   I   know   that   developing   a   sound  scouting   report   can   be   the   difference   between   winning   and   losing  basketball  games.

Over   the   years,   I   have   learned   to   appreciate   the   importance   of  developing  a  sound  and  solid  scouting   report.  With   the  advent  of  editing  software,  the   job  of  creating   scouting   reports  has  become,  simply,  what  you  put   into  it.  However,  scouting  reports  can  be   to  much  information  as  well.  With  that  being  said,  it   is  important  for  the   coaching  staff  to  craft  a  plan  that  is  suitable  to  their  teams  needs  and  personalities.

In  my  early  years,  from  2007-‐2010,  our   personnel  was  extremely  savvy  and  smart   in   regards  to  information  being   provided.  Our  scouting  reports   resembled   a   dissertation;   however,   the   players   wanted  information  and  the  more   information  the  better.  It  wasn’t  abnormal  for

COACH  WALLACE   is  entering  his  8th   season   with   the   Gators.  Previous   coaching   includes:  Contra  Costa  Community   College,  Albany   High   School,   St.   Mary’s  Berke ley   High   School   and  established  AAU  program  Albany  Swish.   He   is   currently   the   3rd  Most   Winningest   Coach   in   SFSU  history,   with   3   CCAA   playoff  appearances,   and  has   @inished  as  high   as   10th   in   Final   NCAA  Div is ion   I I   West   Reg iona l  rankings.

them  to  receive  a   `ive  page  scouting   report  with  a  test  at   the  end,  which  we  called  a  skull  session.  However,  as  I  have  evolved  as  a  coach,  we  now  have  a  player   information  scout,  which  provides  speci`ic  information  on  players   weaknesses   and   tendencies.   I   have   found   that   less   is   better.  Giving   them   more   speci`ic   information,   I   found,     has   been   a   more  effective   tool.   In   addition,   we   spend   more   time   on   focusing   on   our  strengths   and   weakness   versus   what   our   opposition   does.   I   `irmly  believe   if  we  focus  on   our   internal  strengths  and  weakness  our  team  will  be  in  a  better  position  to  execute  the  scouting  report.

! HAPPY  HOLIDAYS  don't  have  to  be  at  a  cost  of  a  10  pound  weight  gain  on  the  scale.    Tis  the  season  to  enjoy  the  company  of  others  and  heavy  foods.    Here  are  some  tips  during  this  time  of  the  year  to  help  manage  from  over  eating  and  losing  track  of  your  `itness  goals.

COACH  SCHUTTE   is   entering  her   2nd   season   with   the  Ga to r s .   She   p rev ious l y  coached   at   Western   Oregon  U n i v e r s i t y   w h e r e   s h e  r e c e i v e d   h e r   M . glass.    If  you  feel  that  you  need  more  add  a  little  water  to  that  champagne.

3.WORKOUT:  Knowing  that  you're  going  to  be  consuming  a  little  more  over  the  next  couple  of  weeks  add  an  extra  workout  in.  Do  an  extra  20  minutes  on  the  machine  or  take  a  `itness  class.    Exercise  will  be  a  nice  reminder  of  your  `itness  goals  and  help  keep  you  on  track  for  healthy  behavior.

1.DO  NOT  SKIP  MEALS:  It's  very  common  to  think  "I  just  won't  eat  all  day  so  that  I  can  gorge  myself  later."    Not  only  do  you  become  grouchy  to  be  around,  due  to  starvation,  but  it  is  more  likely  that  you  will  stuff  yourself  with  more  calories  than  the  meals  you  skipped  to  begin  with.

2. STAY  AWAY  FROM  THE  ALCOHOL:  As  we  all  know,  alcohol  contains  a  lot  of  unnecessary  calories.  Try  to  limit  yourself  to  only  one  drink  or  one

4.PACE  YOURSELF:  Don't  `ill  your  `irst  plate  with  as  much  food  and  take  at  least  20  minutes  eating  it.    There  will  always  be  plenty  of  seconds  if  you're  still  hungry.    This  will  allow  your  body  to  process  the  food  you've  ingested  and  help  prevent  you  from  over  eating.

5.WEAR  SNUG  CLOTHING:  None  of  us  want  to  look  heavy  or  over  weight  while  we  see  our  family  and  friends.    Wearing  snug  clothing  with  help  keep  you  conscience  of  feeling  too  full  or  bloated.    We  all  know  we've  tried  to  pull  the  loose  shirt  a  time  or  two  in  our  life.

Remember,  it's  the  holidays,  there  is  no  reason  to  gorge  yourself.    As  far  as  eating  goes,  its  just  another  day  of  the  week.    Look  at  the  holidays  as  a  challenge  and  attack  it.    Don't  be  the  one  in  the  gym  in  January  trying  to  lose  those  extra  5  pounds.

Go  Gators!

Alumni  Game  RecapSan  Francisco   State  welcomed  back  their  Alumni  on  October  20th  to  start  the  season.  Members  of  ex-‐head  coach  Arden  Kragalot  and  Coach  Wallaces’  past  teams  were  on  hand  to  play  the  incumbent  2012-‐2013  Gators.   Great   fun   by   all   as   many   former   fans   and   parents   came   to  support   the   Alumni.   Outside   of   some   bumps   and  bruises,   the   game  was  both  fun  and  entertaining  for  fans  and  players.  The  Alumni  lost  by  a  undisclosed  number,   however,   they   had  many  bright   spots   during  the  game.  Current  Gator  freshman  Erica  Lohrenz  highlighted  the  game  by  draining  @ive  3-‐pointers  in  her  collegiate  debut.

Updates  since  graduation?Since  I've  graduated  with  a  degree  in  exercise  science  I  have  gotten  certi@ied  by  the  National  Academy  of  Sports  Medicine  and  now  work  full  time  as  a  Tier  3  Personal  Trainer  at  Equinox.

Biggest  lesson  you’ve  learned  from  Coach  Wallace?Biggest  thing  I've  learned  through  playing  under  Wallace  has  been  how  to  strive  in  the  face  of  adversity.

Favorite  memory  playing  at  SFSU?My  best  memories  playing  as  a  gator  were  all  of  the  good  times  spent  with  my  teammates.  When  you  spend  that  much  time  together  you  literally  become  a  family.  Through  good  times  and  bad  I  made  lifelong  friends  and  I  will  never  forget  those  4  years.

Advice  for  younger  players?Advice  for  the  young  players  coming  up  would  be  to  know  that  what  you  put  in  is  exactly  what  you  get  out  of  everything  you  do  in  college.  You  must  @ind  that  balance  between  school,  hoop,  friends,  family,  etc.  give  it  your  all  because  you  only  get  4  years  an  you  don't  want  to  have  any  regrets  when  it's  over.
