San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Game Notes

Sunday, November 12, 2017 49ers Gash The G-Men

San Francisco finished the day rushing 33 times for a season-high 186 yds. and 2 TDs.

The team’s 186 yds. rushing were the most by the 49ers since 12/11/16 vs. NYJ (248 yds.).

Moving The Chains

The 49ers finished the day converting 8 of their 12 atts. on 3rd down (66.7%). San Francisco’s 66.7 conversion percentage on 3rd down was their highest of the season and highest since converting 6 of 9 atts. (66.7%) at Jax. (10/27/13).

The 49ers punted only once on the day, which was the first time the team had 1-or-fewer punts in a game since 9/14/14 vs. Chi.

Goodwin Scores From Deep

WR Marquise Goodwin registered an 83-yd. TD pass from QB C.J. Beathard. It marked Goodwin’s 1st TD recept. of the season and his longest rec. TD since 9/15/16 vs. NYJ, as a member of the Buffalo Bills.

Goodwin’s 83-yd. recept. was the longest pass play by a member of the 49ers since 10/13/14 at StL (QB Colin Kaepernick to WR Brandon Lloyd – 83-yd. TD).

Goodwin also had 1 carry on the day for a career-long 18 yds.

Beathard Sets Rookie Records

QB C.J. Beathard’s 83-yd. TD pass to Goodwin was the longest of his career and the longest by a rookie QB in 49ers franchise history.

In the first half, Beathard completed 13 of 16 atts. for 198 yds., 2 TDs and a QB rating of 157.8. His 157.8 QB rating was the highest by a 49ers QB in the first half (min. 10 atts.) since 10/7/12 [vs. Buf. (QB Alex Smith – 12 of 15 for 237 yds., 2 TDs and QB rating of 158.3)].

Beathard became the first rookie QB in franchise history to complete 2 TDs of 45-or-more yds. in a single game.

With 186 passing atts. this season, Beathard has now set the rookie franchise record for most passes attempted by a rookie QB, passing QB Tom Owen (184 atts. in 1974).

With 101 completions this season, Beathard has now set the rookie franchise record for most passes completed by a rookie QB, passing QB Tom Owen (88 comps. in 1974).

Beathard Runs It In

QB C.J. Beathard scrambled for an 11-yd. TD run, his 3rd rushing TD of the season.

Beathard has now registered 1 rushing TD in consecutive games [1 rushing TD vs. Arz. (11/5/17)] for the first time in his career. He is the first 49ers QB to register consecutive games with 1-or-more rushing TDs since QB Colin Kaepernick [10/20/13 at Ten. (1 rushing TD) & 10/27/13 at Jax. (2 rushing TDs)].

Breida Hits The Giant Hole

RB Matt Breida scored on a 33-yd. TD run, finishing the game with 55 yds. on 9 carries. His 33-yd. run was a career long and the longest rushing TD by the 49ers this season.

Celek Cruises

TE Garrett Celek hauled in a career-long 47-yd. TD pass from QB C.J. Beathard late in the 2nd qtr. to give the 49ers a 17-13 halftime lead. It marked his 2nd TD recept. of the season and 8th of his career.

Blair Strip-Sacks Manning, Reid Recovers

DL Ronald Blair III registered a strip-sack of Giants QB Eli Manning, marking the first FF. Blair brought down Manning for a second time on the day, for the first multi-sack game of his career. He now has 5.0 sacks in his career.

S Eric Reid recovered the Manning fumble for his 1st FR of the season and 2nd of his career (10/13/13 vs. Arz. – 1 FR).

Elvis Is In The Backfield

LB Elvis Dumervil brought down Manning for a 6-yd. loss. The sack extended his team lead to 4.5 on the season.

49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Press Conference – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants How do you feel? “I feel good. I feel very good. I didn’t know it’d take this long, but it was special with the guys. I was real happy for them. Those guys have been working so hard and we just keep coming in every Monday so disappointed. By the time I see them every Wednesday, it’s like the first game of the year. To have them still out there going like that with how many we’ve lost in a row, that’s what gave us a chance to win today and just real happy for them.” After the game it seemed like you were in love with everyone and everyone was in love with you. Is there a certain feeling of redemption? How did it feel? “No. When you lose nine in a row you learn to savor the moments and enjoy these. It was tough work for us to get our first win and we got it. I think the guys knew how much it meant to me and I knew how much it meant to them. I think we’re a pretty close team and I think we’ve gotten closer through adversity. I hope this can make us better through adversity also.” Does it feel like you got the monkey off your back now after getting that first win? “I got that monkey off my back. Now I have to get my second one or that will eventually be a monkey too. That was just one win, but it definitely felt good and we worked hard for it. That’s not what our goal was. We’ve got a lot of goals ahead of us. We feel we’re going in that direction, but it was nice to get a win for everyone here.” What can that win do for your players especially the younger guys on this team? “It’s hard to win in the NFL and I don’t think young guys always realize that. I think the more you coach the more you realize that. You have to play very good, whether you’re playing a real good team or a team that’s not so good. It’s hard to win in this league and a lot of things have got to go right. You’ve got to work very hard. You’ve got to play for four quarters and I think we’ve seen that throughout the year. You can’t take anything for granted. You lose this much in a row and you go back to those five ones that we lost in a row by three points or less and I think when you have those types of games its always, ‘Oh, if we would have just done this or just done this. It’s alright more will come. More will come.’ And, we kind of missed that window. Got kind of a little banged up these last few weeks and been missing some players and trying to get back to where we were when we were competing in the games, score-wise. I think everyone now realizes, you can’t waste one play. You can’t waste one day. It’s four hours on Sunday, but it starts on Wednesday and every rep that you take goes into that win or loss. I think young guys are really learning how important practice is, how important meetings are, because every single play can dictate the outcome of a game.” Can you talk a little bit about the long pass? QB C.J. Beathard to WR Marquise Goodwin, it seemed like after that play it was going to be your day. “It was nice. We’ve hit that play a couple times. We hit it last week also and the safety cut the high cross. C.J. made the right read to go the top level, because the safety cut. It’s a three-level throw and the safety cut the middle guy. The O-Line gave him the time to see it and he let it rip. This exact one he let rip last week verse Arizona, but this time we got a safety cutting so it was only one guy left and he hit him in stride. We’ve gotten some explosives this year, but we haven’t gotten many explosive touchdowns and it was just nice today, and not only that play, but the one to [TE Garrett] Celek, the run by [RB Matt] Breida. It just felt real nice in some of those explosives, the guys end up making a hell of a play and finishing and getting us points. Touchdowns.”

Page 5: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES - National Football League€¦ · San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Game Notes Sunday, November 12, 2017 49ers Gash The G-Men San Francisco finished

After how many hits Beathard took last week, definitely a cleaner game. What was the difference that you saw that kept him from getting hit? “Well, being able to run the ball as much as we did. I thought the biggest thing for us that we’ve struggled on all year was how good we did on third down. I don’t know what our final percentage was, but it seemed like 70 or 80, something around there. To be able to make those third downs, to stay on the field, to allow you to run your offense, mix in the run game a lot, have some play actions, some keepers off of it, not having to drop back very much, except on third down or anything over third and three. I think it was balance and it takes the pressure off everybody. Mainly the quarterback, but also the O-Line, the receivers, the backs. You make them defend the whole field and you put guys in more of an advantageous advantage.” How does the way C.J. played today give you pause to delay putting QB Jimmy Garoppolo in that role after the bye or is that still the plan to put him in? “No, it never was the plan. As I told you guys, I’m taking it week-by-week. So, I don’t have to put really pause on anything. Looking forward very much to seeing our guys tomorrow, so we can enjoy this, review it together, coach up all the stuff we can get better at. We’re going to take a team photo, do somethings and then we are going to get away from each other for a while. I’m going to continue to work with Jimmy over the bye week, here and there. We’ve got some rotations of some coaches doing that to catch him up. We’ll get a bonus practice next Monday, or a week from tomorrow where we get everyone back in and that will be to get everyone loose and get them back from their time off and we’ll see where it goes from there. Monday is an extra day and then we’ll start the evaluation Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, but it’s not just about C.J., it’s not just about Jimmy. There’s a lot of things that go into it.” Just to be clear, Adam Schefter reported this morning that your plan is to start Garoppolo after the bye week. That’s not true? “That’s not my plan. I don’t have a plan yet. There’s no way anything you guys hear reported could be accurate because I just told you guys our plan, which is we’re going to evaluate when it gets to that time, so depends where Jimmy is at at that time. I know C.J. got banged up today also with his thumb again, so we’ll see where he’s at, but we’ll deal with that Monday when we come in here next week.” Were you waiting to take the team photo after a win? “I was waiting until I’m forced to take it and we usually do that on a bye week just so we can knock it out and get it out the way.” How much of an impact did getting T Joe Staley back on the line make today? “I think it made a lot (of impact). Joe’s definitely one of the better tackles in this league, one of our best players. So, anytime you go into a game without him you’re definitely missing some stuff. It was great to get him out there. He definitely caught me off guard this week when he sent me a text on Tuesday telling me he was playing. I told him not to mess with my emotions when he did that, because I’ve been told that before and then it doesn’t happen. So, I tried to slow play it all week to not get too excited about it. But, the way he looked in practice, he looked good each day. For him to come out there today I think pumped a lot of guys up because that’s not something he had to do by any means. It was something he wanted to do and we really appreciated it.” Was there ever a point that you were concerned that losing was going to sink into the culture that you’re trying to build and kind of become the accepted standard? “Yeah, always. I think that’s what happens to most people. You lose nine games in a row, especially some of the tough ways we did it and then feeling like you’re getting more banged up as it went along. It’s tough. It’s tough work. It’s a lot easier when you just check out and point fingers at people and blame it on someone else. That’s not what our guys did. I do think we have some special people in our

Page 6: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES - National Football League€¦ · San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Game Notes Sunday, November 12, 2017 49ers Gash The G-Men San Francisco finished

building. I think it’s tested the character that we have and I do believe that we will be stronger for it. It’s stuff I talk about every Monday and it usually leads throughout the week that it’s very hard to find out about other people or about yourself until you see how you handle adversity and I’ve been very impressed with a lot of guys in that locker room and our coaching staff, how they’ve handled this.” You haven’t had a lead very much this season, did it feel different coaching with a lead? Did you tell yourself this is a weird feeling to have the lead? “It did. It felt more normal to tell you the truth. Just in terms of calling plays and things like that. I’ve never thought too much out of that, so I haven’t made too big of a deal about that. But, it’s gotten pretty out of whack this year over those previous nine games, to how little that we have had a lead and you don’t realize that until you go back and look at some of those scores. We’ve only had it for about six plays and then it happened today, we got a lead and they came back and answered pretty quick. So, it starts to seem like here we go again. Especially after we got a couple turnovers there, which I was so impressed with because we had some turnovers and on those turnovers, they didn’t go down and score after it. Our defense stepped up right at the right time and we came out in the second half and I felt the second half, both sides answered. That last half of the fourth quarter felt very good.” C.J. said the last two weeks, he’s been tuning out the noise since you guys added Jimmy. How has his approach been in your mind? “It’s been very impressive. Everyone says that because that’s what you should do, but it’s harder to do than it is to say that. But with C.J. has been very true. That hasn’t phased him at all. He’s been the same guy since the first day I met him until now. He just works. He grinds. He’s extremely tough. He’s very smart. The game is not too big for him and he enjoys playing football and we’ve got a good quarterback room here. Those guys have been working great together. It’s been real fun to come to work with them throughout the year. I’m really looking forward to getting back after next week and finish this year with all those guys.”

49ers QB C.J. Beathard

Press Conference – November 12, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

Could you walk us through that long touchdown to WR Marquise Goodwin? “It was a great play call by [head coach] Kyle [Shanahan]. It was a perfect play call for that coverage that they had. [TE Garrett] Celek and [RB] Carlos [Hyde] did a great job picking up the pressure they brought, an all-out blitz. They did a great job stepping up there and taking it to those two guys that were blitzing. The O-Line gave me a bunch of time to get it up to Marquise, a speedster who we knew could get over the top of any coverage. He’s the fastest guy in the league. I just had to put it out there for him. He did a great job of breaking the tackle.” Did you see the safety come down on the double route? “Yeah, that was part of the play. Obviously, if they had a different coverage on it would’ve been a different read. But, the safety jumped the over route and Marquise ran a post over the top of it and did a great job finishing the play.” How does it feel to finally break through and win a game? “It feels great. There’s really nothing better. There’s not a better feeling. That’s why you play sports is that feeling in the locker room with your teammates celebrating a win. There’s nothing like it. At the same time, there’s nothing like, the feeling sucks when you lose, but the feeling when you win is incredible and that’s why you play.”

Page 7: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES - National Football League€¦ · San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Game Notes Sunday, November 12, 2017 49ers Gash The G-Men San Francisco finished

Why was it so important for you to finish off and come back from the injury after you appeared to hurt your hand? “I just wanted to stick it out there with those guys and finish. I wanted to finish the game in a victory formation and be able to kneel the ball and that’s what we did. It was the first one of the year and it was just an awesome feeling.” You were kept clean throughout the day contrast to last week. How much does that help you? Do you sense that going through the game that you have a clean pocket and are you able to be more confident? “I think so. I think they did, obviously, they did a great job today protecting me. I feel like I barely got hit, barely even got touched. That’s a credit to everybody. The coaching staff, the play calling, the receivers getting open. The O-Line blocking their tails off and, like I said before, Carlos and tight ends doing their jobs in protections and then obviously getting the ball out. I think they did a great job of that. You kind of feel over the course of the game what the pocket’s like and they did a great job at protecting the whole game.” How was it having T Joe Staley back out there today? “It was big to have Joe back in there. A veteran guy, this is his eleventh year in the league. Just the veteran leadership, he’s an All-Pro guy. Not only to have him on the field, but have him in the huddle. Gives your team more confidence.” After you threw that ball to Marquise, I think it was 56 yards in the air. What did that play feel like? You were able to step up, you had great protection. Carlos had a good block for you. What did that feel like just to lay that out there for him to catch it right in stride? You see the sideline just going nuts. “It was awesome. It starts with the protection, like I said. Carlos did a great job blocking, stepping up, taking it to his guy. So did Celek. Did a great job stepping up and blocking his guy. Gave me enough time, a bunch of time, to make the throw to Marquise. Marquise is one of those guys that you really can’t over throw the guy. You can try to throw it as far as you can and he’ll get to it somehow. That was one of those throws, solid coverage, safety cut and laid it out there to him. He did a great job breaking the tackle and getting in the end zone.” Do you feel like after a play like that, it’s going to be your day? “Definitely gives you some good momentum going into the rest of the game. Third-and-eight, a play like that, however many yards it was, it gives the team some spark. Especially on the sidelines. You go over there and it gets the defense up and they’re all fired up and they go out there and play a great game. You can definitely say it helped motivate and spark the team a little bit.” TE Garrett Celek said you hurt your hand at one point and was thinking about maybe coming out. When did that happen and how were you able to stay in? “It happened on the touchdown I had, the run. I hit my thumb. It’s alright, but I got over to the sideline, just felt how my grip was and tossed a couple balls. I wanted to be in there when we did the victory formation, so I wasn’t trying to come out.” Is that the thumb you banged last week? “Yeah, same thumb. Yeah.” What did Kyle say in the locker room after the win? “What did he say?” Yeah.

Page 8: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES - National Football League€¦ · San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Game Notes Sunday, November 12, 2017 49ers Gash The G-Men San Francisco finished

“He was just fired up. I think the whole team was fired up. Like I said, there’s no better feeling than celebrating with your teammates in there. We got to do that for the first time. The first of many for Kyle and [general manager] John [Lynch]. It was just really awesome to get his first win as a head coach and be able to celebrate that with him.” I know it feels good to win, but this team has really learned this year how hard it is to win a game in the NFL. Did that play into some of the emotion on the sideline? It seemed like there was euphoria. “Yeah, I think that’s a huge part. It’s been a long time coming. We’ve been so close for so many games. It’s a play here, a play there that can change the whole course of a game. The guys, the team that we have, we get back, we go to work. There’s no drop off Wednesday’s practice, just because your record. No one looks at the record on the team and are like, ‘Aw whatever.’ We go to work and the guys are supportive of each other and ready to go and we’re fighters. That’s what they do. I think that’s why it was so awesome to come out and get a win today.” You’ve said the last couple weeks you’re tuning out all the noise with the addition of QB Jimmy Garoppolo and when he may or may not be inserted in the starting lineup. Kyle has said a lot of people say they don’t do that, but you actually do it. Where does that come from you think? “It just comes from a great support system. I’ve got a great family back home that helps me tune all that stuff out. I came from a good college program where our head coach there harped on that all the time. It’s funny, when you’re doing good everyone is saying good stuff about you and then when you’re doing bad, they’re so quick to bash you. So, it’s like why even listen to it. Even when you’re doing good. Even when you’re doing bad. Just tune it out and don’t listen to it. That’s what I do. All I can focus on is what I can do and try to help this team be better.” Do you feel you earned the opportunity to start another game, the next game? “I just feel like I’m just excited right now where we are. We just won the game and I’m not really even looking that far ahead. I got a long bye week right now that I’m excited to rest and kind of recover a little bit. When that time comes, it’s up to coach and I’ll support his decision. If I’m the guy, then I’m going to go in and work my butt off and do the best that I can.”

49ers DL Ronald Blair III Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

You had a couple sacks today. You’ve got to feel good about the performance. “I felt great. It was a good team win. We played well in all three phases. I’m proud of the effort we put forth today. It’s just a great feeling.” Does today’s win take a little pressure off the players? “I think we put pressure on ourselves week-in and week-out just to make sure we perform and execute. This week was no different. We make sure we hold ourselves to the highest standard. We finally executed and came through this week. After the Bye week, it will be the same pressure.” Does it make it a little easier rolling into the Bye week with a victory? “It’s a whole lot easier. You can sit back and relax and chill a little bit, go back and see your family. It’s good to go into the Bye on a win.” What are your thoughts on San Francisco 49ers QB C.J. Beathard? He showed a lot of toughness and resilience and really played a nice game today.

Page 9: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES - National Football League€¦ · San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Game Notes Sunday, November 12, 2017 49ers Gash The G-Men San Francisco finished

“He played a great game. We knew that’s what we were going to get out of him when we first got him. He got a lot of time today. He made some really good decisions.” San Francisco 49ers LB Rueben Foster had another double-digit tackle game. What’s it like playing in front of this guy? He’s everywhere. “He’s great. It’s like having 12 people on the field. He’s all over the place. He’s really smart on the field, too. He’s a great tackler. I’m honored to have him back there. He’s a great player.” You battled back from some injuries, spent some time on the sideline. How sweet does it feel to get back out there and contribute? “It feels great because, for the longest time, I felt like I was letting my guys down sitting back and watching them while I was sitting out with a thumb injury. I’m just glad to be able to come back into the locker room and celebrate a win with the guys. It feels really good.” You guys didn’t sit back today. There were hurries, strip sacks. You guys just pinned your ears back today. “We were just out there having fun today. Nothing to lose. We just wanted to go out and have fun. We just wanted to let loose and have fun. We all work together day-in and day-out. We just wanted to have fun and get a win together before the Bye week.” It looked as if when the game wore on, you guys smelled blood in the water. Am I right about that? “When you go into the fourth quarter with a lead, as a defensive line you should pin your ears back because you know it’s going to be more of a pass tendency.” There were times where it would have been easy to say: ‘Here we go again.’ You guys didn’t. What is it about the character of this team that, despite your record, you’ve never really done that? “I’ve got to credit that with the character of the guys on this team. Nobody has ever wavered, given up on this team, no matter what the record was. We all played like we have been undefeated. Nobody has wavered from their character. There’s a lot of integrity in this locker room. I’ve got a lot of respect for every man on this team.” You guys have worked very hard for this. How important is to get one in the ‘Win’ column to instead of just a close loss? “It feels great. Every team in the NFL works hard week-to-week, it just takes for you to go in and execute on Sundays. It was good for us to go in and execute going into a Bye week so we can have this good feeling for a couple weeks.”

49ers RB Matt Breida Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

Take us through the touchdown run and the emotions that came with it. “It was an outside zone play. The offensive line and receivers did a great job of blocking. I saw the cutback and there was no one back there. I hit the hole, and like I said, the receivers did a great job of blocking downfield and I ran to the touchdown.” For most of the game you guys had only missed a couple of third down opportunities and you ended up 8-for-12. Can you put a finger on why you guys just seemed to deliver and hit stride?

Page 10: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES - National Football League€¦ · San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Game Notes Sunday, November 12, 2017 49ers Gash The G-Men San Francisco finished

“We started making plays out there. The system works, players just have to make plays. I feel today we all got on the same page. The receivers and quarterback were linking up. The running backs and offensive line with protection were doing a great job. We just got everything together today and this is where the offense can go.” Can you share the emotions and what was said after the game? “Everyone was just excited and happy that we were able to get general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan a win, their first win. We were also ecstatic, but we knew we’ve still got another half of the season to finish when we come back from the Bye week, so we need to finish strong.” Can you talk about what difference having San Francisco 49ers T Joe Staley on the line makes? “A huge difference. When you’ve got a guy that has played in the NFL this long and Joe’s a great player, to me he’s a Hall of Fame player, it means a lot. Just having him out there, his leadership. He keeps the whole team up.” On your touchdown run, you ground them down pretty well. Do you think you gassed them a little? “Oh yes, most definitely. Once we get the run game going, it’s hard for teams to stop. With Coach Shanahan calling the plays like that, it’s hard for a defense to defend. We just did a great job today.” Talk about the toughness of San Francisco 49ers QB C.J. Beathard? “He’s tough as can be. Poised, cool, calm and collected all of the time. He doesn’t get panicked at all. He’s a great player.”

49ers DL DeForest Buckner Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

Does today’s win highlight the job that this coaching staff has done? “Everybody loves the coaching staff and the new regime. The whole season has been so close. We’ve been in almost every game, we just haven’t finished. Finally we got this first win. We don’t expect anybody to leave.” When San Francisco 49ers WR Marquise Goodwin catches that ball from San Francisco 49ers QB C.J. Beathard, does it feel like today is going to be your day after that? “It really started with the whole week. Everybody was just hungry. We knew we have a Bye week next week, so we wanted to leave everything out on the line. We wanted to make sure that we didn’t have anything in the tank after the game. We fought our butts off and came out with a ‘W.’” How much difference does a win make when you start 0-9? Is it going to be a weight off of people’s shoulders? “Honestly, it’s the momentum. It sparks the momentum for the last part of the season. We want to finish out strong.” How has San Francisco 49ers DL Ronald Blair III’s insertion back into the fold helped you guys out? “Ronnie balled today. He got a sack, fumble and another sack in the fourth quarter. Having him back has been a tremendous help. I’m just happy with the way he played today.”

49ers TE Garrett Celek Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

How did it feel to get one in the open field? “It felt great. That play wouldn’t have happened with [San Francisco 49ers WR] Marquise Goodwin. He blocked the safety on that which allowed me to get on the corner, make a move and score. I owe that touchdown to Marquise.” The pass seemed like it was a bullet from San Francisco 49ers QB C.J. Beathard. “It was a great ball from C.J. I knew right away and he knew too. As soon as we lined up and saw the coverage, I knew right away that it was coming to me. You just have to take advantage of those opportunities.” You guys have worked hard for this to validate all the hard work with a win. What does that mean inside this locker room? “It really brings up our spirits. We’ve been working so hard. I’ve said before that this is one of the best teams I’ve ever been on. I know that our record doesn’t show it, but we are so tight and so close in this locker room. To finally get a win is huge.” San Francisco 49ers T Joe Staley was emotional about this group and that you finally validated it with a win. “I think any other team in the NFL, if they have a record like ours, you can just see teams rip themselves apart. The types of guys that are in this locker room that [San Francisco 49ers general manager] John [Lynch] and [San Francisco 49ers head coach] Kyle [Shanahan] brought in are so tight.” Was it nice to see the body language with the drooped shoulders on a different sideline this time? “I’m on cloud nine right now. This is awesome. We’re all going to celebrate and enjoy this win. It’s good to have it before a Bye week so we have two weeks to enjoy the ‘W.’” How about the effort of C.J. Beathard? It seems like he’s getting better. “He’s definitely getting better. In weeks past, he’s gotten hit quite a bit. That’s on us as an offense. This week we made a difference. He wasn’t getting hit, and that’s what happens.”

49ers LB Reuben Foster

Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

You waited a while for this one. How gratifying is it to see that validated with one in the ‘win’ column? “It feels great just to know that the hard work and effort paid off. Not giving up paid off. All of us just staying strong and staying positive.” You said 0-9 but not for long last week. Why were you confident that you guys would take care of business this week? “This team doesn’t give up, no matter what. I’ve seen a lot out of a lot of rookies. I’m impressed and I’m honored to play with them.” Did that ever waver this year, even during some of those bad times? Were you ever worried about people giving up?

Page 12: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES - National Football League€¦ · San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Game Notes Sunday, November 12, 2017 49ers Gash The G-Men San Francisco finished

“No, because every day, even when we lost, everyone came in with the right mindset of getting better. We just have to keep it consistently. We just can’t let this win affect us. Enjoy it, but you can’t let it affect us.” Two games in a row now you’ve finished healthy. How much does that help you get comfortable in the system? “It’s great for poise and confidence, just to know that I can finish a game in this league and knowing that my body is getting back right. It amazes me every day how I’m able to finish more and more.” As a defensive unit when you make a stop and get off the field after delivering big plays, what impact does that have? “It changes the momentum. It’s wonderful for all of us just knowing that we have that confidence and we’re all showing excitement and passion. When you see your brother showing that passion, you’re going to want to show that passion, too. You want to deliver the same effect that he’s delivering.” I talked to a couple veteran players here today. Obviously, veterans don’t normally want to be part of a rebuilding effort. They’re excited because of you guys and the way all of you guys, the young guys, work. What do you think it is about this locker room and this group of guys that allowed you to keep pushing? “It’s great knowing the vets have our back, the rookies’ back. It’s a lot of stress for the rookies just to come in and try to stand up and try to earn a position. You do your job and whoever is doing their best for the organization, you own the spot, you own the position. It’s just really hands-on and making somebody feel comfortable.”

49ers RB Carlos Hyde Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

Could you tell what this meant to general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan? They looked pretty happy. “Everybody’s happy. We just got out first win. First win for those guys. It’s definitely a good thing. We’ve got to build on this. We’ve got the Bye week coming up and we’ve got to build on this and carry this momentum to our next game.” You had a really nice block on that long touchdown pass to WR Marquise Goodwin. What was that play like for everybody? “Marquise is the fastest guy in the NFL. If we give [QB] C.J. [Beathard] enough time to get the ball off to get it to him, those plays are going to happen. The offensive line and me, we all did a good job giving him time to get the ball off and we executed the play for a touchdown.” You told me that the motto of your guys’ room is ‘everybody eats.’ Do you feel like today was the first day you got to finally put that into action? “It was good for all of the running backs getting a taste of the game. [RB Matt] Breida coming in, getting a touchdown, his first one, was good to see. We’ve got to keep it going though.”

49ers C Daniel Kilgore Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

What happened today? Did you guys play better as a unit? What was it today that separated from the others? “I think we definitely communicated very well. We picked up their line stunts that they did have. There were a couple times we didn’t get our leverage or something from the outside. I think up front-wise our communication was the key for us running the ball and we were successful with it.” You guys could stick with the run today too.--? “Absolutely. We talked about it all year long on first and second down being able to establish the run. I have not looked at the stats yet but we didn’t have to throw the ball 50 times today. “We could run the ball and let [San Francisco 49ers RB] Carlos [Hyde] and [San Francisco 49ers RB Matt] Breida do what they do and [San Francisco 49ers FB Kyle Juszcyk] Juice. Can’t forget about Juice.” You guys had a lot of long plays but it seems like the long pass to San Francisco 49ers WR Marquise Goodwin just kind of broke it for everybody? “Marquise is an individual that has a lot of speed. I think that you have to use his speed when you get a lot of one-on-one coverage and let the quarterback put it out there for him and he did that.”

49ers T Joe Staley Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

You guys have been dialing up that long play to San Francisco 49ers WR Marquise Goodwin but not for that big score. Seems like you guys had great protection and everything worked on that play? “It was just one of those plays where we got single coverage and Marquise has the speed to get over the top and made a heck of a play. To also to break that tackle and finish the play as a touchdown, it was one of those plays where a player is making a play in a situation where we needed it.” What does a play like that do for the morale of the team? “I was looking at the sideline and the whole sidelines were going nuts so it is exciting.”

49ers CB Ahkello Witherspoon Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

First win. Does it feel good? “It feels great. It feels awesome.” What did San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan say after the game? “He just said congrats and that he appreciates all of our hard work. That’s what it’s about, just working every day.” Is it a relief after so many close losses? “Yes, it’s a relief. It’s also kind of comfortable to feel what a win feels like. It’s like, ‘OK, that’s what a win feels like.’ We just know what the standard has to be moving forward to get a ‘W.’”

Page 14: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES - National Football League€¦ · San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Game Notes Sunday, November 12, 2017 49ers Gash The G-Men San Francisco finished

Some people say why don’t you go 0-16 and get a good draft pick, but they don’t realize that there are people here. “None of us like to lose. That’s one thing that [San Francisco 49ers general manager] John Lynch has done a very good job of. He’s brought competitors in here. I see that from my teammates. That’s why it’s easy for us to go out at 0-9 and compete at our highest level. We like to play ball.” San Francisco 49ers DL Ronald Blair III said the defense has played up tight in the past and today you let it go. Do you agree with that? “Today we came out trying to hold ourselves to a higher standard. That comes to making plays. It doesn’t mean you tighten up. That means you relax more and just try to be as dominant as you can. That was our approach today.” Is there anything you can do or that someone on the team does to loosen people up? “At my position it’s pretty stressful for 70 snaps. In terms of loose, I wouldn’t say that that’s the right word because it’s pretty dangerous playing loose out there. I would say that our week of preparation allows you to come out there and be comfortable. I think we had a great week of preparation.” Is it more of getting more comfortable and growing up? “Absolutely. To keep getting more comfortable, we keep having to confirm it by winning football games. When you go into a week where you’ve prepared at a level that allows you to win, then you can keep moving forward and that confidence will keep building. Where you get road blocks is when you build up that confidence and believe the preparation was ample but still lose. That’s what winning does. It encourages another level of growth, another level of confidence. In two weeks I think we’ll be at another level than we’ve been as a group.”

Giants Head Coach Ben McAdoo Press Conference – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Opening comments: “Alright, a tough ball game for me to take. We knew we were going to face a hungry young football team today. We had some fight in us and it got away from us in the end. It’s important for us to realize, and I’ve talked to the team about, that every play and every game and every phase is so important in each and every game, and it got away from us today. We need to go take a long hard look at the tape, at the game, make sure we get everything corrected and be honest with each other. But give the Niners credit. They outplayed us today. They outcoached me today.” Why do you say you were outcoached? “Look at the scoreboard.” What is going on with your defense? I mean, they let, you let 31 points, that’s an offense that really struggled in recent weeks. Where does, where has it gone wrong? “Yeah, again we need to go take a long hard look at the tape. I’m not going to grade any players up here today. I’m going to make sure we go take a long look at the tape.” What do you think about San Francisco 49ers QB C.J. Beathard on the other side? “He played well today. He had a nice day.” Do you think your team gave a sufficient effort, especially on defense? “Again, I’m going to go look at the tape before I make a comment on anything.”

Page 15: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES - National Football League€¦ · San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Game Notes Sunday, November 12, 2017 49ers Gash The G-Men San Francisco finished

Are you kind of at your wits end trying to figure out what’s going on here and how to get to these guys? I mean, each week it’s something--? “No, never. I mean, we have what, seven games left to play? We’ve got a lot of football left to play.” Did you consider taking New York Giants CB Janoris Jenkins out? It looked like he didn’t give much effort on that San Francisco 49ers TE Garrett Celek touchdown. “Again, we’re going to go back and take a long look at the tape, and I’ll let you know how it grades out after that.” What did you think of his effort from first sight though, at least? “I saw him miss a tackle. He was going up against some pretty good speed there on the long ball in the first half on that third-down play.” Did you think there was a here we go again feeling about when--? “No, I thought we battled back in the game. It was a back-and-forth, close, tight ball game early. I didn’t get that feeling.” Let’s talk about your defense. The 49ers ran for over 180-yards on the ground, they punted one time and average about six punts a game. How disappointed are you in the defense? “Again, we’re going to go take a look at the tape and make sure we be honest with each other after we look at the film.” And you said you saw fight in your team today. What was the evidence there? What did you see--? “Just, it was close. It was tight early, offense responded. I thought there were some early scores that we gave up, rallied down. We need to take advantage of the turnover that we got. Defense created a turnover and a heck of a play by [New York Giants DE Olivier Vernon] OV there. We need to take advantage of that, but I thought we moved the ball consistently, had some fight in us, made them go the long way. We just, you know, we’ve got to go take a look at the tape.” In your head, when did this game turn in the third quarter? “Yeah, somewhat there in the middle of the third quarter. When you, it’s an 11-point game, it’s a two score ball game, you’re down a touchdown, you’re down two point conversion and a field goal, it’s a, you know, when you have a two possession game, you’re always in striking distance. Even if it gets you know, under a minute, you kick a field goal, onside kick, score a touchdown and go for two. So, any time it’s within 11, you’ve got a nice chance there. Once it starts to get into multiple scores, you really got to change the way you want to play. We have that in us. We didn’t get it done.” You’re 1-8. You just lost to a team that was winless coming in. Is this, do you find that embarrassing? “No.” Well, what did you find embarrassing? Is there a point where you would be embarrassed by--? “I’m not embarrassed by this team.” Do you worry at all about your job security after all this? “No, that doesn’t have anything to do with anything. We have to find a way to win a game. We have to go address what happened out here on the field today, take a look at the tape and be honest with each other.”

Page 16: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES - National Football League€¦ · San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Game Notes Sunday, November 12, 2017 49ers Gash The G-Men San Francisco finished

I think it’s the fifth straight game in which you attempted a field goal that New York Giants K Aldrick Rosas has missed one, and you could have kept it a one possession game after they scored the touchdown. Do you need to reassess your kicking situation? “Yeah, can’t kick the ball out of bounds and we’ve got to make the field goals. Every point counts, every play counts and every situation, it’s all important, especially now for us. We’ve got to make kicks. We’ve got to keep the ball in play.” Was it frustrating to see the early turnover after emphasizing that so strongly all week coming off of the last game? “You’re never happy to see turnovers, but frustrated isn’t a word I’d use.” What did you think of that play? What happened? What was the--? “It looked like he tried to push the ball out at the end. I don’t know if he was trying to throw it or what the case may be, but I haven’t had a chance to talk to him about it yet.” Do you need to address your situation with the team? Because, there’s going to be speculation going--? “What situation? We have to go correct the tape, alright? We have to get ready for our next ball game. We have a chance to play probably one of the best teams in football next week. So, you know, there’s no situation.” At 1-8 you’ve got a pretty veteran team. What do tell them to try and keep them motivated? “Again, we have to do one thing first. We have to look at the tape first. We have to figure out what went wrong, we’ve got to address it, we’ve got to fix it, we’ve got to move on, and we’ll talk about motivation next week. They’re pro-football players. They need to be self-motivated. Everybody gets a paycheck this week and we need to go out and play that way.”

Giants QB Eli Manning Press Conference – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants What was the message from New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo after this? “He’s disappointed in this loss, tough one, and so I’ve got to look at the film, take a hard look at it and find out how each of us can play better, do our job better, put us in a situation to win the next game.”

What happened on that fumble in the first half? “I’ve got to hold on to it. I have to do a better job doing that and keep two hands on the ball, and just got to throw it. Had one hand on it, but I have to cover it, get a knee down and hold on to it as long as I can.”

Were you looking to try to throw it and just get the incompletion or did it just come out of your hands or try cover it up? “I was trying to hit [New York Giants TE] Evan [Engram] on the deeper one and then kind of got wrapped up. I had one hand on it, trying to flip it out, and I’ve got to try to hold on to it as long as possible.”

What’s been the hardest part about this season for you so far, as you’re trying to keep the morale up and be positive? “Well it’s tough losing. You work hard every week to go out there and execute well to make plays to put your team in a situation to win and it’s not happening. Doing some good things, in the first half I thought we came out well and moved the ball well and the second half just didn’t execute well enough.”

Page 17: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES - National Football League€¦ · San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Game Notes Sunday, November 12, 2017 49ers Gash The G-Men San Francisco finished

Can you put into words how shocking it is to be 1-8 after the expectations coming in? “Yeah, it’s disappointing, but we just have to, we’re in this situation, we’re the reason we’re in it, so we just have to keep working, compete every week and expect to win every week.”

There has been a lot of talk about your head coach possibly not returning. Would you like to see McAdoo back? How do you feel about your head coach? “I have great respect for coach McAdoo. He’s done a good job getting us ready to play every week and we just have to play better.”

Thoughts on San Francisco 49ers QB C.J. Beathard, rookie out of Iowa, 49ers player did well today? I know you probably were studying film or what not while he was on the field, but what did you think of him? “Seemed like C.J. played well. He had a couple big plays, had a rushing touchdown, so he seems to have a good feel for the offense. For a rookie coming in, he played well today.”

Giants CB Eli Apple Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

The 49ers scored a total of 30 points in their last three games before today. Today, they get 31. What happened out there? Why did they have so much success against you guys? “They did a good job of running the ball. They play-actioned off of it. It was a matter of being consistent and that’s been a problem for us.” You had the loss last week. People are trying to rally around New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo with the comments earlier in the week and you have this kind of performance? “Yeah, it was very disappointing, but it’s about coming out here with these guys and trying to just fix it every week.” Can it be fixed at this point? “We’ve got the guys for it. We’ve got the talent. Everybody knows that. I felt our attitude before the game and coming into this one was very high. I felt the energy in the beginning but we didn’t maintain that.” Is it perplexing to you that your defense, with so many of the same players, was so good last year but now receivers are running free and they can score so many long touchdowns? “It’s disappointing. Adversity like this doesn’t last, but sometimes you go through it. You have to do your best to get better from it. You have to take the good from the bad and bring the energy week-in and week-out.”

Giants LB Jonathan Casillas Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

Your thoughts about the team? “We’re not a good team right now. Hopefully, we can turn this around to be competitive. It’s sad that I’m sitting here talking about us not competing in games instead of winning, but that’s the truth. We have to be able to compete, hang around to the end and pull out a victory. Like I said before, you have to look at yourself in the mirror and see what you can do better personally.” Did you think the full effort was there from the defense by everyone?

Page 18: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES - National Football League€¦ · San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Game Notes Sunday, November 12, 2017 49ers Gash The G-Men San Francisco finished

“I’ll have to look at the film. I can’t sit here and say we didn’t do this or that. I made some mistakes, personally. Even on a play where I gave up a touchdown, I was running but I was tired and couldn’t catch him. I played my butt off on every play, but I just wasn’t good enough on that play.” How disappointing was it that it was the defense that had some problems today? “It’s disappointing. I’m a prideful person and I do feel like I’m representative of our defense. We didn’t play up to character or up to par. We can’t keep putting together games like this and expect to beat anybody. We’ve only got one win and it’s going to stay like that until we figure out how to slow these teams down.”

Giants S Landon Collins Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

How are you feeling right now? “Hurt. Hurt, discouraged, upset.” How do you explain it? “I don’t know how to explain it. They made big plays. We didn’t stop the big plays.” Do you think there was full effort from everyone on defense today? “I have to look at the whole film. I thought everyone was flying around, but the big plays were downfield. It’s up to the last person to make the play.” Is it more surprising based on what happened at last week’s game, because you knew you had to respond? “We came here expecting to win. It’s not that the San Francisco 49ers were 0-9. We know what we’re capable of. We have consistency in practice and our work ethic. It’s not transferring to the field for the game.” San Francisco 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard played well today and made some passes…? “He made the correct passes. He didn’t do anything spectacular. He played their game plan.” The San Francisco 49ers were 8-for-12 in third down conversions. Is there any reason why you were giving up so many conversions? “I don’t know. They were catching the ball and making plays. They caught it and turned up field. It wasn’t because they were getting extra yardage, it was that last effort they were getting every time.”

Giants G Justin Pugh Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

On the play San Francisco 49ers DL Ronald Blair III came around you, and he had gotten the fumble over there, was that just an example you couldn’t get there fast enough? “No, I should still be able to block him. I came on the next series after that just trying to keep going obviously; I want to win the game. That’s just a bad play by me.” How can you put it in words how shocked you are being 1-8 after all the expectations you guys had coming in here? “It’s definitely shocking losing to that team we lost to. It’s definitely tough. I thought we were going to win for sure. It’s definitely tough.”

Page 19: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES - National Football League€¦ · San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Game Notes Sunday, November 12, 2017 49ers Gash The G-Men San Francisco finished

How much does it seem like each week that there’s a new low? Does that feel like it to you guys, or is that the perception on the outside? “Losing to a 0-9 team, it can’t get much worse than that. We are here where we’re at. We will figure out where were going from here. We still have seven games left.”

Giants CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants What did you see out there? “We got schooled. I did not see enough relentless play, attitude, you name it, I did not see it. Everything we should have done, I felt we did not do it.” What does this performance say about this team? “It doesn’t say anything about this team. I can’t speak for anybody else. You see me out there. I am flying around. I can’t speak for anybody else. We have seven games to finish the season, finish right man. Each week is a new week, we get another opportunity. We cannot continue week-in and week-out put out another performance like that.” The San Francisco 49ers are an 0-9 team--? “It doesn’t matter if they are 0-9 or 9-0. No matter what, a team is a team. Should every given Sunday be that big of a lead? No, it should be a dog fight.” How do you explain the loss? “It seems like you have two teams that came out there with their backs against the wall. You had a team that came out swinging harder than the other.” What is your assessment of San Francisco 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard? “Smart. He is a guy that gets the ball out fast. He doesn’t make too many mistakes. They make the game very simple and he executed.”

Giants WR Sterling Shepard Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

How about the day you had out there, 140 yards catching, and 11catches for 142 yards--? “I’m just trying as much as I can. We didn’t come out to win, so I’m not very happy about that.” What’s been the hardest part about keeping your heads up for a season like this? “Coming in week-to-week thinking you are preparing the way you should be, not coming out, and executing the game plan. It’s pretty frustrating.” New York Giants QB Eli Manning being the veteran, he’s played so well for you guys. Again, he did it today I thought. “I mean, he’s always played solid. He’s always going to be on his P’s, and Q’s. We’ve just got to be out there, and help him out sometimes.”
