This month our Youth Group “Young Covenant Warriors” will be participating in Box of Joy, a Christmas gift ministry organized by local Catholic schools, parishes and groups nation-wide. By packing Boxes of Joy with toys and other gifts, our pa-rishioners will bless children suffering from extreme poverty by sharing the joy of Christmas and planting seeds of hope through the Gospel. We encourage every parishioner to pack a Box of Joy! If you need additional boxes please let us know.

Last year, we participated in the program and our parish did an amazing job! They were able to bless 20 children suffering from poverty in Haiti and Guatemala!

This year, we have set a goal to bless 100 impoverished children in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Guatemala. Materials are avail-able now and the deadline for returning your packed Boxes of Joy will be NOVEMBER 5TH. Please bring your boxes to the office. Checks to cover the shipping of the gifts overseas $9.00 should be made out to Cross Catholic Outreach, not the parish.

Our faith and Catholic teaching offer a moral framework for choices about the use of the death penalty. A principled Catholic response to crime and punishment is rooted in our convic ons about good and evil, sin and redemp on, jus ce and mercy. It is also shaped by our commitment to the life and dignity of every human person, and the common good. The opening chapters of the Book of Genesis teach that every life is a precious gi from God (see Genesis 2:7, 21-23). This gi must be respected and protected.

The Caritas Corner

We want to provide an update on our previous assis-tance to a family of seven including five children ages 5 to17 who were burned out of their modest home earlier in the year and had insufficient insurance to cover their belongings and reconstruction. In May, we contributed $2,000 to help ease the family’s burden, help replace their personal necessities and assist in the rebuilding effort. Efforts by us to secure them a larger mobile home failed and they were unable to purchase one either. Thus, the family is still living in a very small second-hand RV on the property. Our contribution helped them pour a new slab and the husband began framing the walls of a new home. Unfortunately, it is very difficult for them to earn enough money to pay the bills, rebuild their home and purchase clothing and school supplies for the kids.

In order to continue to ease their burden, the Caritas Fund has contributed an additional $2,000 to help the family with the cost of framing a roof on their small home and/or a gift card for much needed school clothes and supplies. On receipt of this additional donation the family was “extremely grateful and expressed their feelings of being so blessed with the caring and heartfelt generosi-ty” of our parish. Fr. Victor personally presented the dis-tribution and was very pleased with the efforts of our community.

This Caritas – or “Charity” -- Fund is administered by the San Francescani Society and funded through the second collection normally on the third Sunday of each month. Its purpose is to assist recipients – who through no fault of their own have fallen on hard times and have recog-nizable needs to help get back on their feet.

In addition to the once a month second collection, the Caritas Fund accepts individual as well as business do-nations. Donations can be mailed to: Henry Garcia, Treasurer, San Francescani Society, P.O. Box 782474, San Antonio, TX 78278-2474.

We are continually looking for additional brothers and sisters in need. Referrals can be made to Ron Bucchi, Society President, by leaving a message at the SFdP office at 210-227-0548.
