The Caritas Corner The Caritas Fund recently played a role in a sit-uation where a Leon Valley elderly couple was in desperate shape. The husband suffers from moderate dementia, and his wife fell in the shower and broke her hip. Unfortunately, she died of her injury. The house was a terrible mess and needed total cleaning and repairs. The husband needed groceries. The Caritas Fund assisted by providing approximately $1,800 for cleaning supplies, food and some house repairs. This was an Inter-faith effort with the Mormon Church on Huebner Road and its parishioners; the Leon Valley Police and Fire Department; the City leadership and staff; and the San Francescani Society who all responded to the Lord’s call for help with the onsite clean-up and repair efforts.

This Caritas – or “Charity” -- Fund is administered by the San Francescani Society and funded through the second collection normally on the third Sunday of each month. Its purpose is to assist recipients – who through no fault of their own have fallen on hard times and have recognizable “one time” needs to help get back on their feet.

In addition to the once a month second collection, the Caritas Fund accepts individual as well as business donations. Donations can be mailed to: Henry Garcia, Treasurer, San Francescani Society, P.O. Box 782474, San Antonio, TX 78278-2474.

We are continually looking for additional broth-ers and sisters in need. Referrals can be made to Ron Bucchi, Society President, by leaving a message at the SFdP office at 210-227-0548.

Thank you for your continued generosity and support.

San Francescani Society

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The fact that many monas c churches do not have a prominent tabernacle shapes the pa erns of litur-gical prayer. Monas c communi es o en protect the ancient value of “receiving from the same sacri-fice,” meaning that the communicants are assured that what they eat and drink in the Holy Mysteries actually comes from the same celebra on. It sur-prises many to learn that the Church does not fore-see, nor does it provide for, Communion of the faithful from the reserved Sacrament. Liturgical laws have long defended your right to receive from the same sacrifice, the same Mass, that you a end.

At one me, of course, the bread for the Eucharist was the ordinary bread of the day, except unleav-ened, probably prepared at home. It was broken and distributed to the faithful. Early on the loaf it-self was referred to as the hos a in La n, meaning the “sacrifice,” the same word for the sacrificial ani-mal in Jewish worship, and for Jesus as the Lamb of God. By giving his life on the cross, Jesus became the hos a for us. To this day in the Greek Church, one of the tasks of the priest’s wife is to bake the bread for the Divine Liturgy, some mes in a bakery oven dedicated to that purpose and called a “Bethlehem.”

Today’s familiar individual hosts first appeared in the eleventh century at about the me when taber-nacles were coming into use. The turn away from “bready” bread allowed the hosts to be reserved since they did not spoil like regular bread, and made the annual “Easter duty” counts easier.
