The Elderly

That the elderly, sustained by fami-lies and Christian communities, may apply their wisdom and experience to spreading the faith and forming

the new generations.

This feast of Christ the King is a paradox. Here is the King of kings who associates with tax collectors, the sick, and the outcast. Here is the Lord of lords whose primary mission was to conquer all sin, suffering, and death. Here is the monarch who died the death of a common criminal. And here is the king who taught his sub-jects—you and me—to be sure we are taking care of the poor, homeless, hungry, thirsty, naked, and es-tranged. Why should we share our resources with anyone in these groups? Because this King lives in them. Instead of inhabiting a castle filled with riches, this King chooses to live in the hearts and souls of the poor, oppressed, and those who cry out in suffering. God does things differently than humans do.

The Gospel for this weekend is the familiar Parable of the Last Judgment. In this story, the people are sepa-rated as sheep from goats. The Judge places on his right those worthy of entering the kingdom of God. They have fed the hungry, clothed the naked, visited the sick and the imprisoned, sheltered the homeless, and given drink to the thirsty. They will go off to eternal salvation. The goats on the other hand did not take care of anyone in these groups and thus will go off to eternal punishment. Obviously, the judge in the story is Jesus. You and I will be either sheep or goats. We hope to be sheep. In fulfilling the basic needs of any of these people we are doing it for Jesus himself. He identifies with the poor and the suffering.

Esta fiesta de Cristo Rey es una paradoja. Aquí está el Rey de reyes que se asocia con los recaudadores de im-puestos, los enfermos y los marginados. Aquí está el Señor de los señores, cuya misión principal era conquistar todo pecado, sufrimiento y muerte. Aquí está el monarca que murió la muerte de un delincuente común. Y aquí está el rey que enseñó a sus súbditos, tú y yo, para estar seguros de que nos ocupemos de los pobres, los desamparados, los hambrientos, los sedientos, los desnudos y los distanciados. ¿Por qué deberíamos compar-tir nuestros recursos con cualquiera de estos grupos? Porque este Rey vive en ellos. En lugar de habitar un cas-tillo lleno de riquezas, este Rey elige vivir en los corazones y las almas de los pobres, oprimidos y de los que gritan de sufrimiento. Dios hace las cosas de manera diferente que los humanos. El Evangelio de este fin de semana es la Parábola familiar del Juicio final. En esta historia, las personas están separadas como ovejas de las cabras. El Juez pone a su derecha a aquellos que son dignos de entrar en el reino de Dios. Han alimentado a los hambrientos, vestido a los desnudos, visitado a los enfermos y encarcelados, protegido a los desamparados y dado bebida al sediento. Ellos irán a la salvación eterna. Las cabras, por otro lado, no se ocuparon de nadie en estos grupos y por lo tanto irán al castigo eterno. Obviamente, el juez en la historia es Jesús. Tú y yo seremos ovejas o cabras. Esperamos ser ovejas Al satisfacer las necesidades básicas de cualquiera de estas personas, lo hacemos por el mismo Jesús. Él se identifica con los pobres y el sufrimien-to.
