San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association Our 26 th Year as a Woodworking Association Volume 26 November 2007 Newsletter Issue 7 The Next Meeting is 7 pm, November 28 th at the Al Bahr Temple, 5440 Kearny Mesa Rd. Behind the Hampton Inn November Program Mike Jackofsky—Woodturner Extraordinaire You have seen his award winning work at Design in Wood where he has won seven first place ribbons. His work is on display in permanent collections at the Mingei Museum and the Sam Maloof Historical Residence Museum. He is in very high demand and travels all over the world giving demonstrations, seminars and classes, turning wood on a lathe into beautiful hollow form vessels and other shapes. Mike has perfected the art of turning unique burls into exquisite one of a kind works of art. His skill is manifested in a visual treat as he creates unique pieces that are beautifully proportioned. It is very rare to see hollow vessels in the size that Mike is able to create, some of which have such thin walls that their weight hardly registers on a scale. We are fortunate to have Mike Jackofsky provide a demonstration in wood turning for this month’s meeting. Mike will explain and demonstrate how he turns these amazing hollow vessels and other artistic pieces. We will have a lathe set up and live video on the big screen so you can see the close up action. Mike takes this extraordinarily difficult task and makes it look effortless. There are few things as enjoyable as watching a master woodworker perform his craft. Come watch the shavings fly as we treat you to this world class woodturner’s entertaining and artfully presented demonstration. Come early to get the best seats! See you there. November Raffle The Really Big Prize is back this month. It’s a variable-speed Mini-lathe, the most popular prize we’ve ever had, and thanks to Mike Durlak at Rockler, the raffle could afford it. It’s small enough for any shop, and powerful enough for the biggest. Be sure to put a few tickets in the hopper for this one. But that’s not all... Take a look at the other six prizes. Special thanks this month also go to Sponsors Tool Depot and Bill Kohr’s Craftsman Studio for supporting our Association and the raffle with great pricing and fine products. Use our sponsors and tell them we appreciate their support. They make our Association possible. Here’s the complete list of November prizes: 1. Bosch 32069 Drill kit The usual Bosch quality in a drill. 2. Lie Nielsen small Chisel Plane Great for planing into corners and cleaning up rabbets 3. Bosch Router/Plunge Router Kit A traditional prize for the past five years 4. DeWalt job-site vacuum 115 or battery/wet or dry 5. Mini-lathe w/Rockler Pen Turning Kit Did I mention this before? 6. Kreg K-3 Master Faceframe Kit Everything for every kind of pocket holing 7. The usual bucket full of interesting tools, useful accessories and interesting wood Ticket Sales start at 6:30, and only at the meeting. Come early and support this fun event. Every penny supports the purchase of prizes… More support means more and better prizes. The November 4th Rockler Old Tool swapmeet was its usual success, with lots of bargains and lively trading. If you didn’t make it this time, mark April 6th on your 2008 calendar so you don’t make that mistake again. Bill Collins, Raffle Chairman ______________________________________________________________________________________________

Besides the 5-member board we have about 25 committee chairpersons that really form the heart and soul of the organization. Without them we couldn’t function. They all put in a large amount of time each year on your behalf. Committee chairs are listed in each newsletter, so take a look and give them your thanks for their support. Of course there are many opportunities to get involved, meet fellow woodworkers and be part of the largest and most active woodworking organization in the world! If you are interested in serving on the board or a committee of this fine organization please contact any board or committee member and we will get you started. We have several very key positions that need to be filled. Long time refreshment chairperson Harry Feucht would like to find a successor. Also long time membership chairperson Len Wener needs to find a replacement. We also need someone to take over the duties of magazine and book sales for the toy program. These are key positions in the organization and a good chance for some new people to get involved. We are only as good as the number of volunteers we have. Remember to bring something for the brag table. As this is my last meeting as your president I wish to thank everyone for their support over the years and to say it has been a pleasure to serve. Ed Gladney, President [email protected], 858-484-4366 ______________________________________________________________________________________________

November Membership Report

The membership application is located on page 11 of this newsletter As of 9 November the membership is as follows: 1436 members, 1217 renewals and 219 new members. There are 516 spouses with member cards and 535 members receive their newsletters from our website, a saving of printing and mailing hard copies.

A study is underway to print the member cards and mailing labels, thereby reducing a considerable amount of hand lettering of over 2000 cards and envelopes. This issue will be resolved by the time of the membership meeting when an influx of renewals begins. As I stated in the September report, I’m looking for a potential successor as Membership Chairman sometime in the future. It is prudent to have someone learn details of the job before there is an urgent need. Although I’m healthy, I will be 88 in four weeks, certainly time to plan ahead. We’ve automated a lot of the record- keeping over the past few years so that the time demands of the job are less than before. If you consider this an assignment you would be willing to undertake at a future time of your choosing, please contact me at (619) 222-5521 or [email protected] Len Wener, Membership Chairman [email protected] or 619- 222-5521

Children’s Chair Program By Russ Filbeck

Russ Filbeck, former president of The San Diego Fine Woodworker’s Association, and a group of his wood finishing students from Palomar College present a dozen children’s chairs to the Escondido Library children’s section. The San Diego Fine Woodworker’s Association members build fifty of these beautiful chairs each year during the San Diego County Fair. The chairs are made in the Design in Wood Show so the visitors can see woodworking in action. The chairs are then donated to various County children’s programs. Patrick Edwards, former superintendent of the show created this charitable activity in 1987. Since its inception, more than 4000 chairs have been made and distributed. Margaret Ester, Senior Librarian for the Children’s section contacted Russ Filbeck about the possibility of getting some of the chairs for the children of Escondido. The chairs still require scraping, sanding and finishing after they are built by the Association members. Russ wanted to involve his wood finishing students at Palomar College in this community service effort so they prepared and finished the chairs. These sturdy and beautifully finished oak chairs will last many generations in the Escondido Library Children’s section

We also received thank you letters from the following organizations: The Waldorf School of San Diego; Foundation For The Children of the Californias; House of Peru; Department of Pediatrics, Naval Medical Center; San Diego Floral Association and Art of the Chair, Brandon Gallery. _____________________________________________________________________________________________

Craft Emergency Relief Fund We have been asking folks to keep an eye out for artists who have been affected by the wildfires. We have about 500 people in the affected counties in our database, but emails of only about 100 of them-so we need people like you, who know everybody, to help us get the word out and let us know what they are hearing from artists. We have set up a wildfire message board on the CERF www.craftemergency.org <http://www.craftemergency.org/> website for people to post things relating to the fires. You have to register to post, but it is pretty straightforward. Let us know what you hear from artists, and if you know any craft artists who need help, please put them in touch with CERF. Thanks, Craig Nutt, Director of Programs, Craft Emergency Relief Fund
