PROFILE

Page 4: Samuel Sardinha ENG_CV+PORTFOLIO

With a strong interest and ever-growing motivation in Architecture/ Building matters I'm capable of working in a self confident autonomous way as well as dynamically within teams and clients in a proactive, hands on approach and with a relational attitude in areas like; architecture, design, project management and construction management in small and medium scale projects.

Having worked at five architecture offices from 1998 to 2005, and as CEO of my own practice, I'm used to develop conceptual and technical ideas on medium and big complexity projects. Additionally, my career in Architecture has led me to develop a varied professional skills over the last 17 years, namely in all project phases through completion, but also in project coordination and management of small working teams, being able to deal effectively with personnel at all levels eg.; site contractors, clients, senior management, staff, etc.

Therefore I gained an extensive experience in project processes starting from concept design, design development stages until reaching project final construction documents.

In 2005 I joined Novodesign/ Brandia international advertising company with high end clients such as Vodafone, Roche, Fifa, Zon Tv, Portugal Telecom, TAP, Sata Air Azores. There I started as Project Manager Chief and soon became Production Manager and New Bussiness Management with full responsibility on projects and clients. On those duties I leaded a team of six co-workers.

Whether it's work as an architect, as a construction administrator or as a project manager, I pride myself to have the ability to recognize and articulate a distinct voice for every case, keeping on top of projects and making sure the team gets all parts to the finish line at the same time, and on schedule. I consider myself as a strong problem solver, with an emphasis on innovation and creativity, bringing new ideas to the forefront of design and being able to handle pressure and deadlines with efficiency, with good communication and leadership skills

In 2008 I founded Gravito Sardinha Arquitectos, giving continuity to my architectural work developed since 2000. Besides contests, the office develops private projects from concept to production/ construction in architecture and design works. Our market is mainly small and medium retail shops and residential projects.

In addition to my professional activities I develop volunteer activities, mainly as cultural events producer and communications management in collective groups or institutions, such as Pecha Kucha Nights Lisbon, Gaia Ecological Group, Aforest Design and Arquitecturas Film Festival.

Curiosity, sensitivity and creativity encouraged me from an early age through visual education taught in high school. During higher education I continued developing these abilities that have led me in the present to build mechanisms for visual and technical understanding, which I practice in my architectural profession.

Recently the interest in conceptual operative thinking to complex problem solving and creative processes has lead me to areas such as performance, improvisation, anthropology and complexity sciences. Leaded by the Choreographer João Fiadeiro and Anthropologist Fernanda Eugenio I have had the opportunity to be a part of Atelier REAL in the ANDLAB research group developing methods, conceptual tools and strategies such as “Real Time Composition” and “AND” method departing from several areas of human knowledge such as Field Theory and Deleuzian Philosophies.

For the last three years, first as enrolled in the Master of “Advanced Studies in Architecture” and then as an invitee, I am a Mentor Teacher for 3th, 4th and 5th grade students at ETSAM (Technical School of Architecture of Madrid) in the Units of Professors Almudena Ribot and Javier Frechilla and Professor Emeritus Jose Manuel Lopez-Pelaez.

Through my international experience and travels I'm confident in working internationally or in more challenging cultural environments; always ready to take on new challenges. I'm desirous of keeping learning and sharing my knowledge wherever I may be.

I'm sympathetic, open minded and easy going, self engaged with high responsibility, honest and self motivated. Always trying to meet the objectives at hand, I'm used to be combative and determined against problem situations, through persistence, which support the ability to solve “my” own problems allowing me to be effective and meet the objectives.

ASSOCIATE RESEARCHER2010.2013@ REAL/ AND LAB

COMPANY PROFILE

The company was founded in 1990 bringing to l i fe João Fiadeiro's choreographic work. S ince i t ' s ea r l y days , the company paid special attention to the estab l ishment of a demanding and constructive dialogue between the artistic community, the public and c u l t u r a l a g e n t s t h r o u g h experimental projects, co-p roduc t ions , res idenc ies , f e s t i v a l s , w o r k s h o p s a n d publications.

Within this context João Fiadeiro makes a statement, presenting his first pieces throughout Europe but mainly in Germany and France. Since 1997 João Fiadeiro is often invited to direct research workshops in several countr ies , namely France, Austria, Swiss, Czech Republic and Denmark. In 1999, RE.AL organized the first international workshop on the concept of 'Real Time Composition'.

Between 2009 and 2014 the work main focus was research, theoretical production and transmission of the Real Time Composition method. At the same time, the AND_Lab, a center for research and scientific creat iv i ty, was founded in partnership with the Brazilian a n t h r o p o l o g i s t F e r n a n d a Eugénio.ist Fernanda Eugénio.

Teacher and Associate Researcher for Architecture at AND LAB, Art and Science multidisciplinary platform for Complex Sciences, Systems Theory and Emergence in creative process.

Investigation coordinated by João Fiadeiro. Developing systematic conceptual tools for transversal applicability in Science, Art and everyday life; for decision making, problem solving and sustainable management of relationships.

Research entailed investigation of theory and practice about the self/event, subject/object relationships, thinking/ act, agency and passivity, ethics and aesthetics and artifact creation born out of the “obsession” of how to “live together” in collaborative processes and how to live between the unknown and ever changing processes.

RESEARCHER TEACHER2015. present@ CO.LABORATOR.IO

CO.LABORATOR.IO is a personal pedagogical working project started in spring 2015. Departing from the research on tools and strategies for creative thinking at Atelier REAL and AND_Lab with Choreographer Joao Fiadeiro and Fernanda Eugenio, and my own research master thesis on “field conditions and complexity” in contemporary architectural practices.

Based on complexity sciences, stigmergy in particular, and the translation of thinkers and philosophers such as Luigi Pareyson, Bruno Latour, Gregory Bateson, Douglas Hofstadter and Gilles Deleuze. The project aimed to share theoretical and practicing methodologies with emphasis in the doing/making process and step by step procedures exploring “Emergence” and “Self-Organization” as possible modes of action in the production of artistic artifacts.

The tools and methodologies presented, use relational, structural and improvisational thinking presenting the event as an “open” space to act and depart from, activating modes to deal with the unforeseen, the accident and the contingency in an collaborative, impersonal and co-authorship environment without hierarchical organization or central power system.

The project focused on “putting apart” habits and subjective interpretations of the subject and acting within the “real” present conditions as given with the “other” opening the possibilities and limitations of a given context to action, to change and to go on making, and therefore discovering new creative possibilities in a constant adaptation to ever changing realities. In addition, it practiced the velocity of reaction, the acquisition of major complex relationships, without losing precision and simplicity in the actions. The openness and generalization of the conceptual tools and its principles, allows the application of the thinking system to several spacial scales. Tools can be applied to the creation of art and architectural artifacts, to everyday life situations and solving complex problems.

Negotiations are undergoing with institutions like “Matadero”, “Media-lab Prado” and “Casa Encendida” to implement the workshops and classes on a regular basis.

“Samuel Sardinha is a reliable and competent architect who works consistently in order to accomplish his projects. His deep knowledge applied on the first draft, the choice of materials and the whole construction process lead to a high quality and creative final result.”February 14, 2013,

Anne Brunke, teacher at Cambridge SchoolAnne was Samuel's client.

“I worked with Samuel on space design projects for the Vodafone account. Now this is someone you can depend on to meet your deadlines! Samuel manages to combine an eye for detail with a very high work capacity, with quick and accurate results. All the project managers in my team were always happy to work with him, as he inspired confidence and made all projects seem manageable. Another perk of working with Samuel is that he possesses a wealth of practical knowledge of the production phase, therefore avoiding costly and time-consuming mistakes in the design phase. Finally, besides being a cheerful and friendly colleague to have around, he has experience in dealing directly with clients, and has been valuable in maintaining healthy client-agency relationships. I hope to work with Samuel again someday!” May 9, 2009

Lanka Horstink, Client Manager, Brandia Centralmanaged Samuel indirectly at Brandia Central

“Samuel is a detail-oriented architect who never loses sight of the strategic objective. Is a person that I totally trust.” April 26, 2009

Joao Pedro Oliveira, Brand Consulting Manager, Brandia Central; worked directly with Samuel at Brandia Central
