Samsung and Corning –Thirty-five Years of Working Together

The Challenge

One of the most successful equity companiesin international business today is the onebetween Samsung and Corning. In 1973,Corning and Samsung, a rising industrialcorporation in Korea at the time, formedtheir first partnership, Samsung Corning, tomanufacture and market cathode ray tube(CRT) glass for black andwhite televisions.Noone could have predicted that thispartnershipwould eventually lead to Samsung’s andCorning’s leadership positions in today’sKorean active matrix LCD glass market.

In the 1990s,the information display marketstarted to demand a new kind of flat paneldisplay, principally for mobileapplications, requiring thin, high-technology glasssubstrates with pristine surface quality.Samsung decided to invest boldly in thefutureand pursue this opportunity. Corningproposed and Samsung agreed to establish anindependent equity venture,Samsung CorningPrecision Glass Company, Ltd. (SCP),based onthe Samsung Corning collaboration model. The company’s first LCD glass substratemanufacturing facility opened in Gumi,Koreain 1996.

The Impact

When SCPwasestablished in 1995,Samsungand Corningdid not hesitate to invest in thefuture, anticipating a promising future LCDmarket. SCP built its second facility inCheonan in 2002 and has continued togrow that facility into one of the largestLCD glass facilities in the world. SCP’s abilityto manufacture the highest quality glasssubstrates for the Korean display industryhas been a strong competitive advantagefor Samsung andCorning. Customers expectmore from Corning and SCP, and they getmore – leading technology, quality, size, supply, and service that they need.

Going forward, SCP should maintain aleadership position in Korea’s displayindustry, while working toward a brightfuture through the strong partnershipbetween Samsung and Corning.

The Breakthrough

In response to this market challenge,Samsung’s world-class manufacturingexpertise and Corning’s knowledge of advanced materials proved to be apowerful combination.

Corning’sproprietary fusion process, inventedin the 1960s, was originally intended tomanufacture safer windshields for cars.Butby refining the process, Corning scientistsand engineers were able to develop anextraordinarily precise, and eventually highlyautomated, draw process to produceglasssubstrateswith exceptionally clean, smooth, flat surfaces and inherent dimensionalstabilityqualitiesessential in the manufactureof LCD screens. The process is fully scalable –an extremely important attribute as theLCD industry continues to demand largerand larger glass for improved efficiency.

By employing Samsung’s manufacturingexpertise and adopting Corning’s fusiontechnology, SCP has built world-classproductionlines since its foundation andhassuccessfully produced large-sizedglass substrates to meet the technical andquality requirements of its customers. SCP,with the support of Corning’s technologists, has also been an industry leader in theintroduction of next-generation glasssubstrates, rolling out the world’s firstGen 7 and Gen 8 substrates.
