Ian Cotton received a Class I BEng (Hons) degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Sheffield in 1995 and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from UMIST in 1998. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Electrical Energy and Power Systems Group of the School Of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester. His current research interests include high voltage design, power systems transients, the use of higher voltage systems in aerospace applications and power system induced corrosion. His work is based in the University of Manchester HV Laboratories, the largest of any UK University where a 2MV impulse generator, 800kV AC test set and 600kV DC test set is available.He is the Director of the MSc Course in Electrical Power Systems Engineering and teaches in areas relating to power system plant. He is a Member of the IET, a Senior Member of the IEEE and a Chartered Engineer.

BEng (Sheffield), PhD (UMIST), CEng, MIET, SMIEEE. FHEA Higher Voltage Aerospace Systems - As aircraft are using more and more electrical power, it is desirable that voltages increase to minimise the weight involved with the use of high current conductors. Work is underway to

examine the design and long term reliability of various forms of electrical distribution systems and components in an aerospace environment. Current projects are examing the methods of testing aerospace systems, examining surface discharge in the aerospace environment, examining high temperature insulation systems for use within the aircraft environment and considering the optimal voltage for power transmission. Higher Voltage Power Electronics - The increasing use of power electronics in systems as diverse as marine, rail, aerospace and power systems themselves means that the voltages of power electronic modules is continually increasing. Work is taking place to improve the dielectric performance of power electronic modules. Much of this work takes place through the IeMRC Flagship Project in Power Electronics.Power System Transients - These have a fundamental impact on the way in which the power system is designed and operated. Studies are examining the ability to minimise substation size through careful control of transients and the effect of power system transients on parallel structures such as pipelines. Power System Plant - Current projects include an examination of the feasibility of using composite crossarms on overhead line towers to reduce visual impact and increase reliability. We are also looking at means of reducing SF6 usage within the transmission system. Lightning Protection of Wind Turbines - The subject of my PhD (many years ago), we continue to actively seek ways to improve the lightning protection performance of a wind turbine.Research Institutes

I'm a Lecturer in Sustainable Energy Systems and part of the Electrical Energy and Power Systems (EEPS) group in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. I got my MSc (2002) and PhD (2006) degrees in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems) from the Politecnico di Torino, in Italy. However, I'm originally from Salento, the tip of the heel of the Italian "boot". During my PhD I was also a visiting student at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. After getting my PhD, I worked as a Research Fellow for one year and half in Torino, and then I moved to Imperial College London where I was a Research Associate from January 2008 to April 2011. I'm author of two books, four book chapters and more than 60 research papers in topclass peer-reviewed international journals and conferences.

Research interests

Modelling and analysis of integrated energy systems (electricity/heat/gas) and distributed multi-generation(cogeneration, trigeneration);

Impact of electro-thermal technologies (cogeneration, heat pumps, storage) on distribution networks; System level analysis of the electricity and heat sectors; System integration of distributed energy resources and sustainable development of energy systems; Energy and energy-related markets; Risk analysis of generation and network investment.

Postgraduate opportunities

I'm always looking for enthusiastic people and perspective students who are willing to engage with new research challenges and who share my same interests. Also, I'm very open to cross-collaborations with other disciplines, particularly economics/finance and thermal disciplines. In particular, I currently welcome PhD applications in: economics of future networks provision of network security through flexible demand design of multi-energy (electricity/heat/gas) networks power system operation with distributed energy resources and storage Selected publications Christine Schwaegerl, Liang Tao, Pierluigi Mancarella, and Goran Strbac. biographyMy work is about understanding ageing of electrical insulation. I am particularly active developing models for high voltage insulation surfaces, and models for asset management, and work closely with a number of utilities. Presently I manage the EPSRC 'Networks Top and Tail' Grand Challenge collaborative project in which 8 Universities are engaged. I have a number of National Grid funded projects, mainly associated with insulation systems. I joined Manchester University in 2003 but started my career in industrial Research and Development on materials and reliability assessment. I progressed through the management of R&D and moved into manufacturing and general management before joining academia. I was promoted to Professor in 2009. I am currently President of the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society.
