Welcome to the Southlands, effendi!Here we say that heroes are born in a crucible: tested

by fire, forged from steel, and turned to diamonds by pressure, danger, and volcanic fire. This book is such a crucible. It’s a setting built with the demands of high adventure in mind, with new civilizations and new dangers scattered across an enormous continent. It’s a land of demons and riches, as all lands of high fantasy are, but with an added benefit. Here, we step out of the familiar footsteps of so many fantasy settings and into older—and sometimes much stranger—places.

In the Southlands, Kobold Press has chosen to present a realm of wonders that reveals at least three or four unfamiliar places for every single familiar one. There are pyramids and world trees here, but there are also tosculi hive-cities and a city devoted to the cat goddess Bastet. The fantasy lore of the lizardfolk, werelions, and gnolls may be far less common than the lore of goblins and ogres, but it is no less wondrous. This fusion of traditional fantasy with a twist gives GMs the ability to surprise players; it allows them to make the world newly strange and magical, while still familiar.

For players of the Midgard Campaign Setting, this book contains a wealth of new details of history and loss, of the headwaters of magic and the nature of ley lines, and the secrets of minotaur labyrinths and genie courts. A careful reader will find much of interest on the role of the

Southern dwarves, the origins of the gearforged, and at least two great kingdoms that have passed into history—but whose treasures and magic remain.

There is much to be had here for players of almost any campaign that pays homage to Egypt and the pharaohs, Arabia and its glorious jinn, or any tropical jungle or savannah setting with pirate coasts and lost gold mines. There’s treasure, new heroes, new villains, and new cities that can easily be dropped into your favorite setting or homebrew campaign. The inclusion of transportation magic in several guises makes it easy to work in the elements you want, without wasting time on safe or dull voyages. We have sought to gather for your delectation realms where great kingdoms prosper, where lurking demons wait patiently for one misstep, and doom is never far away. The poison and the flower are part of the same magical lotus. Such lethal combinations make the Southlands worthy of any gamer’s attention.

In these Southlands, heroes with brave hearts come in many guises—but heroes are heroes everywhere, and their tales are always glorious. I hope you find tales of wonder and enchantment in these pages, and I hope the jinn ever heed your command.
