The Driving Force“The driving force of all nature” was how Leonardo da Vinci characterized water, and composers have made water in all its forms the subject of compositions for centuries. George Frideric Handel’s festive Water Music opens the program, which then features an appealing and intriguing oboe concerto, Sea Winds, by American composer Dan Welcher. Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s early symphonic poem The Storm, inspired by a play by Tchaikovsky’s near-contemporary Alexander Ostrovsky, is followed by Ottorino Respighi’s The Fountains of Rome, the fi rst work in his famous “Roman trilogy” that would later be joined by “The Pines of Rome” and “Roman Festivals.”

The Spring Blossoms of the Earth: Brahms’ Second SymphonySpring and nature are the inspirations for the bookends of this program. The orchestral suite from Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land is taken from Copland’s only full-length opera, whose action centers on a Midwestern family of farmers and the traditions they uphold. Johannes Brahms’Symphony No. 2, occasionally referred to as its composer’s “Pastoral” symphony, closes the season with one of the glories of the Romantic period. Sammamish Symphony audiences will have another chance to hear a rising young soloist, as this concert will feature the winner of the SSO’s annual Youth Concerto Competition.

Entering 1st - 6thMon - FriLodge at Beaver Lake25201 SE 24th St, 98075$200/three-hour camp$25/“Mission Nutrition” program
July 11 - 15Earth, Space and Beyond9:00 am - NoonNature, space, and secret codes are just a few of the areas we’ll explore in this science packed camp. We’ll examine the effects of pollution on our fragile environment and then, by making your own recycled paper, realize the big impact of little changes. Investigate how animals use their sense of smell to detect food and sense danger. Discover how to send secret messages and ciphers to your friends. Then launch your imagination into the solar system as you take a Mad Science journey to space.
July 25 - 29Crazy Chemworks9:00 am - NoonThe wonders of chemistry are revealed as your junior chemist creates surprising concoctions, breaks molecules with ease and shakes up a fl ask full of fun. Kids will use the tools, safety procedures and laboratory techniques of real chemists as they investigate solids, liquids and gases at the atomic level. They’ll craft chemical combinations to create super-sticky-stuff, analyze the properties of light and discover why things glow-in-the-dark. Exploring the elements has never been so much fun!
Mission NutritionNoon - 1:00 pmThis special camp offers working parents a way to sign their children up for both the morning and afternoon Mad Science camps. This special “hour of power” will include time to eat, supervised time outside on the playground, and special Mad Science games.
Fantastic Forces1:00 - 4:00 pmDiscover the marvels of invisible forces as we use air pressure to blow up a marshmallow and then crush a can. Be awed by the wonders of physics as you race rubber band powered cars, build a rocket, and make your very own vortex generator. Magnetism… Gravity… Inertia… Not enough? Then try a hair-raising experience with the Mad Science Van der Graaff generator!
August 8 - 12Gross-out Camp9:00 am - NoonJoin Mad Science as we examine our amazing, gross and sometimes disgusting bodily functions! We’re talking burping, boogers, saliva and germs… And the contributions our cells, tissue and organs provide to create these lovely bodily byproducts. We’ll produce “exploding toothpaste”, create a squishy brain we can play with, and harvest a cup full of mucus to take home and share. Miss manners might not approve but your child defi nitely will!
Mission NutritionNoon - 1:00 pmThis special camp offers working parents a way to sign their children up for both the morning and afternoon Mad Science camps. This special “hour of power” will include time to eat, supervised time outside on the playground, and special Mad Science games.
Eureka! The Invention Camp1:00 - 4:00 pmOvercome a series of challenges using everyday materials, simple machines, and most of all… Your MIND. With a little bit of ingenuity – and some tips from famous inventors – campers will create catapults and forts, construct working light sticks to take home, and assemble a set of circuits with batteries and light bulbs. While Thomas Edison said, “Invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration,” this camp is 100% FUN!
August 22 - 26Super Science Sampler9:00 am - NoonScience comes in all shapes and sizes and we’ll examine a few during this hands-on expedition. Become an engineer and build bridges, domes, cubes, and pyramids. Assemble and control pulleys, levers, catapults, and simple machines. Use chemistry to make your own sidewalk chalk and crystal gardens. Become an ornithologist and discover unique characteristics of birds!
