Sambazon was founded on the idea of conscious change and pushing the boundaries of how business can be done. As a triple bottom line company, we know that our choices make a difference and we also know that
people --- especially students --- have power.
In partnership with The Ecology Center, an organization designed to teach people how to live moresustainably on planet Earth, we put out a call to action to all student-led organizations at colleges across the country. We picked 4 winners with an idea to make their communities more ecological. Each group received
a $4,000 grant from us and a semester of mentorship from The Ecology Center.
A student formed and led group that educates their peers and community about vermicomposting while also diverting organic waste away from landfills, effectively decreasing greenhouse gases.
They plan to install a commercial worm bin compost unit at their R Garden (UCR’s on campus community garden) to help scale their efforts.
The Campus Kitchen branch at Auburn University currently diverts thousands of pounds of food waste from dining halls by collecting, packaging and redistributing it to local food groups
struggling with food insecurity. By switching from the use of their personal vehicles to anelectric golf cart for this mission, the students can more efficiently collect and transport food
while reducing their gas emissions.
Students at the Cal Poly Real Food Collaborative want to make real, healthy, local and ethically grown food accessible to their peers. They already have an impressive veggie box subscription program in place, but with this grant they will be able to expand their reach and up their offering
by increasing yields and growing visibility and engagement around their program.
Inspired by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, these students know that an abundant future starts by giving everyone a seat at the table. As part of The Greenhouse Initiative grant funds, SparksSC will continue their Break to Make event this fall -- an all-women’s Make-a-Thon that challenges women in
engineering and design to come together to find solutions, learn new skills, and develop projects.
