Page 12: Salvation 3

• “Grace comes to us while we are still in our sins and brings spiritual transformation based on the accomplished work of Jesus Christ on the cross.”

From From The Pilgrim HymnalThe Pilgrim Hymnal, 1904, 1904

I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew,I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew,

He moved my soul to seek Him, seeking me;He moved my soul to seek Him, seeking me;

It was not I that found, O Saviour true;It was not I that found, O Saviour true;

For I was found by Thee.For I was found by Thee.

Thou didst reach forth Thy hand and mine enfold;Thou didst reach forth Thy hand and mine enfold;

I walked, and sank not, on the storm-vexed sea;I walked, and sank not, on the storm-vexed sea;

‘‘Twas not so much that I on Thee took hold,Twas not so much that I on Thee took hold,

As Thou, dear Lord, on me.As Thou, dear Lord, on me.

Two Types of Grace

Common Grace

and

Effectual Grace

Page 17: Salvation 3

• Common: To all people; the All of God’s good gifts (rain, sunshine, etc.). What is needed to survive.

• Effectual: To some people; to enable them to believe in Christ.

Page 18: Salvation 3

Common GraceCommon Grace

• Refers to the unmerited favor of God toward all men, displayed in His general care and providence for them.

• Matthew 5:45:

• “ . . . for He makes His sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”

Page 19: Salvation 3

• Common grace, however, falls short of saving; that is, not all who experience common grace are saved.

• Common grace leads one to see his need for salvation, but doesn’t guarantee it.

• Matthew 22:14:

• “For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Page 20: Salvation 3

Efficacious GraceEfficacious Grace

• Also called “effectual calling.”

• Refers to the work of the Holy Spirit which effectually moves men to believe in Christ as Saviour. Efficacious grace is certain, and is sent via the effectual call.

• Romans 8:28-30 . . .

Page 21: Salvation 3

Romans 8:28-30:Romans 8:28-30:

28. And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

29. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

30. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified, and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

Page 22: Salvation 3

• Efficacious grace is an act of God related to His sovereignty, using or employing human instruments.

• It may be an act, and/or a process.

• It is effectual—100% sure.

• Efficacious grace is the means by which God brings life to a sinner, through the Word of God by faith . . .
