hat an exciting time my wife and I had hosting a group of WHRO members on a recent

trip to London, highlighted by a visit to Highclere Castle, the Grantham’s home in Masterpiece 4 Downton Abbey. We visited Bampton where many of the exterior scenes at Downton Abbey are filmed. We went on to Buckingham Palace, Churchill’s War Room, and a cruise down the Thames River with sunny skies every day. This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. As you can see in the photo below, our lunch in Highclere Castle’s state dining room was especially memorable.

This wonderful experience breaking bread with friends reminds me that Thanksgiving comes at the end of the month. Fall is a spe-cial time to share with friends and family, and watch some great TV, like Rick Burn’s TV special The Pilgrim’s: American Expe-rience which airs on November 25th. And tune in to WHRV’s edition of The Splendid Table: Turkey Confidential from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on 89.5 FM for tips on preparing your best holiday dinner ever.

Throughout November, WHRO celebrates the exemplary lives of our heroic military, as well as veterans through our veterans initiative. A special feature you won’t want

to miss airing on Veteran’s Day, Novem-ber 11th, is Navy Seals – Their Untold Story. This program reminds us of the important work that our military does throughout the year. While I never served in the military, living in Hampton Roads has allowed me to meet many active duty military as well as veterans. I am in awe of their dedication, hard work, and their commitment to this country.

WHRO is very proud to present for the first time the Virginia Arts Festival’s 2014 Virginia International Tattoo on the evening of Veteran’s Day. This impressive performance by military bands from around the world is something amazing to behold. Having the great honor of serving on the Virginia Arts Festival’s Board of Directors, I have seen the Tattoo numerous times in person. If you’ve not had the chance to go to the Tattoo, this one-hour special will give you highlights of this wonderful program.

Join me in being thankful for the wonderful people and great experiences in our lives, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

Military

The U.S. Military is an enormous part of our community. This month we honor our service men and women and will highlight the significant and heroic contributions they make in our world, our nation, as well as our community.

Premiering Veterans Day at 8 p.m., WHRO and The Virginia Arts Festival have teamed up to bring you a one-hour special on the 2014 Virginia International Tattoo. Each year, the Tattoo attracts interna-tional participation as eight nations gather and share their unique music, dance and culture.

Designed to be a signature event of the U.S. Vietnam War Commemora-tion, the 2014 Tattoo honored our Vietnam War veterans and their families. More than 28,000 people attended the show in May 2014, and now you can see all the wonder and spectacle from your home.

Renowned for presenting the tradi-tional sounds of the massed pipes and drums, this special feature also includes honor guards, veterans and their stories, singers and performers.

“This was one of the most exhilarating shows that I ever had the pleasure of watching,” said Edward Foulke, a first time attendee. “Words cannot do justice to the music selections, choreography, lighting, sound, and the overall presentation of the many talented people that put on the show. The pageantry was breath-taking.”

Originally created in 1997, the Virginia International Tattoo thrills audiences each spring with an all-new show. More than a performance, the Tattoo is an experience, creating cheers, tears, and standing ovations among

the tens of thousands of patrons who travel to Norfolk each year to see this amazing display of music and might.

Also premiering on Veterans Day, November 11 at 9:00 pm, Navy Seals – Their Untold Story is a program that documents the transformation of the U.S. Navy frogmen into the warrior elite Navy SEALs. Despite the widespread attention paid to the SEALs (Sea, Air and Land) since they eliminated Osama bin Laden, the story of how these clandestine comman-does evolved in response to changing threats — from WWII to the War on Terror — and how their extraordi-nary abilities shaped U.S. and world history, has remained largely untold.

While Public Television programs are entertaining and educational, WHRO is also working to bring attention to the problems and issues facing our nation’s veterans and to assist them in identifying resources to help.

Last April, WHRO partnered with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and other public media stations around the country, to begin a new initiative to support our veterans.

At the center of this initiative is a website, www.whro.org/veterans which offers resources for Vets trying to reintegrate into civilian society, tools and programs to help cope with physical and mental wounds, outlets for Vets to tell their stories of service, programs for families of Veterans, and much more.

November 2014 TV Highlights

Premiering on Veterans Day, this program recounts the ticking-clock missions of the “Commandoes of the Deep” through firsthand accounts — including that of a D-Day demolition team member — and through never-before-seen footage, home movies and personal mementoes. Admirals, master chiefs, clandestine operators, demolitioneers and snipers reveal how U.S. Navy SEALs morphed into the world’s most admired commandoes.

Sloths, once largely ignored, have become a hot topic of scientific researchers. Sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers are also springing up, as development often displaces these gentle creatures. Filmed in Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia, this is a story of friendship between a journalist, the sloth named Velcro, and a network of people working to learn more about sloths in order to protect them.

Almost a century ago, paleontologists found fossil bones from a dinosaur that was bigger than Tyrannosaurus rex. The Spinosaurus fossils were destroyed in a WWII bombing raid. Now, the discovery of new bones in Morocco is reopening the investigation into this epic beast. Follow the paleontologists who are reconstructing this terrifying carnivore, a 53-foot-long behemoth with a huge dorsal sail, scimitar-like claws and superjaws. Bringing together experts in paleontology, geology, climatology and paleobotany, this special brings to life the lost world over which Spinosaurus reigned more than 65 million years ago.

One of musical theater’s biggest blockbusters returns to Great Performances for an encore presentation. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats reigned over an 18-year Broadway run and unending touring productions that continue to travel the globe. Based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, Webber’s hit-filled stage version boasts musical highlights aplenty, including Elaine Paige’s return to her original role as Grizabella, the faded glamour cat singing the show-stopping ballad Memory.

Emmy and Tony Award-winner Kristin Chenoweth brings it home — to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, that is — to perform music from her career. With a classically trained voice set off by a gift for acting and comedy, Chenoweth appears at a state-of-the-art theater that now bears her name, performing Broadway, television and film songs like Popular and For Good from Wicked, songs from her acclaimed performances on Glee and music from Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and many more. Backed by a 13-piece orchestra led by musical director Mary-Mitchell Campbell, Chenoweth welcomes song and dance friends from Broadway in a program sure to be unforgettable.

The essence of the city during the most magical time of year is captured in a series of intimate and unique musical performances on Christmas in New York. For this holiday special, American soprano Renee Fleming and special guests bring the iconic Christmas season in New York to homes across America. Live musical performances, interviews and scenes filmed around the city during the holidays make this an unforgettable musical experience.

id you know that this fall, seven school divisions across Hampton Roads started the school year with

a new superintendent? In October, we wel-comed them to WHRO for their first meet-ing as part of the HRETA Superintendents Advisory Council.

You may remember from previous articles that WHRO is owned and operated by 19 local public school divisions who came together to form the Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Asso-

ciation (HRETA). We meet regularly with the superintendents from these divisions, and their leadership and guidance helped bring us to where we are today.

The new superintendent for Accomack County Public Schools, Kregg Cuellar, comes to us most recently from Des Moines, Iowa, where he was the Chief of Schools. Two more superintendents to join HRETA from out-of-state school divisions include Aaron Spence, superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools, and Victor Shandor, superintendent of York County Schools.

There are a few familiar faces too. Walter Clemmons, the incoming superintendent of Gloucester County Public Schools, was pre-viously the superintendent for Northamp-ton County Public Schools, which is also a HRETA member school. Charles “Eddie” Lawrence, who was the secondary education coordinator for Accomack County Public Schools, took over as superintendent in Northampton.

Public Schools, has been named superin-tendent of Franklin City Public Schools. And lastly, Patricia Fisher has taken over as interim superintendent of Portsmouth Public Schools until a new superintendent is selected.

While several outgoing superintendents retired after more than a decade in their positions, others moved on to assume new roles in other school districts throughout the Commonwealth and in other states. What-ever the circumstance, more than one-third of our owner school divisions have a new leader this year, and we can’t wait to col-laborate with each of them on new ideas and initiatives to benefit Hampton Roads students and teachers!

hen Jacki Paolella and Tyler Warnalis formed the synthpop band DJP and MrT in 2011, they

had no long-term ambitions in mind. They created it for fun to perform at a friend’s party, and it was intended to be a one-time project. But the audience that night reacted positively to their performance, so they decided to do more.

a full-length album, and has performed at nearly every venue in the area. And with a second EP and a tour of the southern leg of the east coast in the works, the band is busier than ever.

Yet as they progress to a greater status of band activity, Paolella, Warnalis, and Abadam maintain the spirit of fun and light-heartedness that created this band. When asked on Stories in the Sky (a program offered on defenestration.net), about any desire for Warnalis to grow his moustache again, Paolella replies, “I want him to be happy.” “I want Tyler to be Tyler,” Abadam

adds. “And if not having a moustache makes him happy, [I’m] down with it.” It may be that part of their rise in popularity comes from this friendship and acceptance that they have for each other.

veryone has the right to know what’s in your food. The range of GMOs can boggle the mind. Geneticists have

bred GMO pigs that glow in the dark by inserting into their DNA a gene for bio-luminescence from a jellyfish. Tomatoes have been developed that resist frost and freezing temperatures with antifreeze genes from a cold-water fish.

What are GMO’s? Organisms whose genetic make up (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally.

Why do they do it? Crops are currently modified to survive herbicide treatment, produce their own pesticides and resist certain diseases.

Where do you find them? Everywhere. In North America, more than 70 percent of our packaged foods contain GMOs.

The five most prevalent GMO crops are sugar beets, soy, canola, cotton and corn,

E which are used as ingredients in all kinds of packaged foods.

Concerned opponents in several states and countries continue to push for GMO labels on foods — if not outright bans on GMO foods. But industry and science insists the foods are safe, labels aren’t needed and they’ll just confuse consumers.

One thing is certain. The battle for and against GMO crops, and the foods contain-ing them, isn’t likely to end soon.

For those venturing into the kitchen for the sometimes stressful task of preparing Thanksgiving dinner for family and guests, help on the biggest cooking day of the year is always as near as your radio with The Splendid Table’s Turkey Confidential! Lynne Rossetto Kasper, award-winning host of public radio’s national food show The Splendid Table, is available to answer listener questions throughout this live, two-hour program. In what has become a Thanksgiving morning tradition, listeners are treated to an unbelievably wide variety of cooking situations. Past shows have included everything from a cross-country trucker cooking his Thanksgiving dinner on the manifold to a panicked first-time cook who didn’t realize a turkey needs to be thawed. Lynne handles all questions with wit, expertise and laughter.

Clock Changes BeginningNovember 17 on NPR WHRV 89.5 FM

Did you know that every public radio program has a clock? Broadcast clocks are set templates that stations like ours use to track the timing of a show’s stories and interviews, newscasts, and funding credits each day.

This fall NPR is making some changes to their newsmagazine clocks, in partnership with member stations across the country. This will help align programs with the way people listen to radio today, and provide stations with more flexibility to include the local content that’s important to our audiences.

So how will you notice the changes? Starting November 17, you’re likely to hear several more regular breaks for local content in Morning Edition, and a 4-minute local feature segment in each hour of All Things Considered. In both clocks, music breaks are longer, giving WHRV more opportunities to share details on upcoming stories while still having time to give you our local updates.

Regular Morning Edition features like StoryCorps and the sports commentaries by Frank DeFord will continue, though you may hear them in different parts of the program.

t was the 4th of July 2009, a day Dwayne Parker will never forget. An Air National Guardsman, he was working security in Saudi Arabia. It was his first deployment

and he was excited to be part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

“I saw activity outside of the wire… I was on top of a fence… that’s when I saw the enemy, called it over the radio, ended up getting blinded in my right eye by a high powered laser. I noticed instantly when I got hit. My head jerked back and I felt a very sharp pain. I could smell the burning of my eye,” he remembered.

“We were in an undisclosed location so they wanted me to keep quiet about my injury. It

wasn’t until I filed a congressional complaint to Senator Webb two months later that they finally got me out.”

After learning of his injury, Dwayne’s wife Rebecca was anxious for him to come home. When he did, he wasn’t the same. “There was depression, he lost that spark,” she said.

“I was on medications and angry about everything! It was not able to do the things that I used to do,” Dwayne said.

The couple stumbled upon an injury adaptive sports camp that was taking place in Mary-land at Andrew’s Air Force base. Dwayne, who set track and field records at his New Jersey High School and played football in college, filled out an application.

“We headed up there a few weeks later and had a really good time! “It was geared towards people with disabilities, focusing on what you can do. I saw people missing limbs – still swimming, running, jumping, it was just amazing,” he said.

“It was wonderful to see him smiling and laughing, to see him get that spark of joy back.” Rebecca said. At camp, Dwayne swam and participated in archery and air rifle train-ing, but it was his speed on the track that impressed the coaches. They invited him to

compete in the Air Force Trials at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.

“I did really well in that competition. I won three gold medals!” Before he knew it, Dwayne was a member of Team USA, competing in track and field at the Invictus Games in London, England, winning a silver medal in the 100 meter race.

As a member of the US Team, Dwayne dined with Vice President Joe Biden, and while in Lon-don had a chance to speak with Prince Harry.

Back home in Hampton Roads, there was no local group dedicated to helping wounded warriors train for athletic competition. So Dwayne and Rebecca started one.

“We want to lure wounded warriors and disabled veterans out of the house and get them involved,” Dwayne said. “That’s the main thing, getting people to be more posi-tive about their situation.”
