GIRLGUIDING SAL TFORD - Your Questions Answeredl questions
Waiting Lists When do I put my daughters' name down to join Rainbow, Brownies or Guides?
Rainbows Can she start when she's 5?
Will she get a place in Brownies when she's n Brownies When can she join?
Does she have to have been a Rainbow fi rst? Can she join NOW?
Guides Do Sa ltford Guides ever go away on camps or holidays?
Adults What do guiders and other adult leaders gain from GirlGuiding?
Fancy Joining us - either as a girl or a leader?
Answers
The younger the better as this gives your daughter the greatest chance of getting a place. (She is guaranteed a place if you make a regular commitment as a leader)
Officially 'YES" But in Saltford we only have 1 unit that can take up to 15 girls, so it's not always possible. We try to give girls one year in Rainbows between the ages of 6 & 7, but it depends how early you put her name down!' Yes! It is an automatic transfer from Rainbows
Any time after her ih birthday (or she can be 8 or 9 - it doesn 't matter!) NO! Many girls go straight into Brownies & have a great time. YES'!! We have spaces in both our Tuesday & Thursday night packs. Why not let her come along and see what we do for a week or 2 before she decides?
Yes' We are planning an activity weekend away next spring and 4 Saltford Guides are going on an International Camp to Sweden next summer. It's a fantastic opportunity for the girls and an experience they will remember for a very long time!!
The chance to do new activities, gain experiences, personal fulfilment and qualifications that are useful in the work place. Above all to have fun and friendship - both with the girls and other guiders. Contact Kate Moore, Tel : 01225872213

I've Gained A See- Through Astra
At the end of Grange or Manor Road, I have been known to shout,
What's wrong with you? Are you all blind? Won't someone let me out?
But my questions go unanswered, As the traffic passes by,
Another day, another queue, I th ink I'm going to cry .
The left snake goes to Bristol, The right snake goes to Bath,
I'd really like to join them, But then I start to laugh .
Perhaps I've got the whole thing wrong. The answer's plain to see,
The problem; Its entirely mine, Invisibi lity !
Black magic on my bonnet? Some Voodoo on my boot?
I've gained a see-through Astra, And a see-through body suit I
So my cars become transparent Impossible to see,
Well they never spotted that, On its bloomin' MOT
Who cast this spell upon me? Perhaps I'll never know,
But could they make a magic wand, To stop this traffic flow?
I'd use it quite discreetly, Just once or twice a day,
I'd thank it most profusely, And then be on my way!

Annual Meeting Christmas Meeting 'Celebrity Circles' - Mr Michael Brayley

Saltford Townswomen's Guild
The September speaker gave a fascinating account of how she traced her birth mother. Mrs. Wendy Parker explained how she was adopted at an early age. She grew up, married and had a family of her own, and decided that she would like to find her mother. She told how, with the help of her husband. she traveled the country and found her original birth certificate, which had the barest details on it. Over time and much searching she did find her mother and siblings with whom she still keeps in touch.
China is a large fascinating country and many of its aspects were revealed by Ivor Button at the October meeting. He started with a large sheet of paper. In one corner Great Britain was pictured. The remainder of the sheet was China which showed how vast the country is. His slide show depicted old buildings with the typical pagoda shape and then modern skyscrapers, ancient walls and modem roads. There were the Terracotta Warriors and masses of bicycles, crowded roads and old less frequented areas. There were comparisons which conveyed his theme of ·China Then and Now". He finished with a shot of Hong Kong. a tall new skyscraper with ancient bamboo scaffolding. This was a fitting end to an interesting morning .

Keynsham & Saltford District Wine Circle
In October we enjoyed a very informative and enjoyable tasting of Argentinian wines presented by our good friend and National Wine Judge, Mr. Vernon Groves. The wines were excellent and surprisingly modestly priced.
At the same time, one of the highlights of the year, our Annual Winema king Competition was taking place. Trophies were presented to the winners of each class, as follows :
WHITE DRY - Alan Dummott RED DRY - Sally Dummott ROSE MED.DRY - Percy Mellor WHITE SWEET - Alan Dummott RED SWEET - Arthur Balsom GOLDEN DESSERT - Fay Bleach RED DESSERT - Percy Mellor DRY APERITIF - Alan Dummott MED.DRY WHITE - Percy Mellor SLOE GIN - Alan Dummott
We would like to thank the judges, Marg Gittins, Carol Coombs and Peter Coombs, for their hard work and fine judgments on our wines.
The Warmley Wine Circle once again invited us to join them for their annual weekend break. This year the venue was Newquay and incorporated visits
21
to Falmouth and Truro. The weather was kind to us and the hotel provided good food and entertainment and of course, the company of friends all combined to make this a wonderful weekend .
At this time of year, Wine Circle dances become more frequent. We attended Nailsea Wine Circle's Autumn dance in October where a fish and chip supper was provided and we danced to the music of "Tobacco Road"
Forthcoming events that we look forward to attending are Bath Wine Circle's Annual Show Dance, Corsham Wine Circle's Christmas Dance, Timsbury Wine Circle's Christmas Dance, our own Christmas dance in Saltford Hall and the Warmley Wine Circle's New Year Dance. With regard to our own Circle meetings, in December we will be judging the outcomes of the Members' ReCipe (a high alcohol liqueur kit) and in January one of our members will present a "surprise" evening.
We wish our members, friends and all wine makers a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.
If you would like to visit or require further information on Wine Circle activities, please contact Alan Dummott - Telephone 01225 873493.
