Letter from the Chair – September 2015

I hope you have all had a good summer. When I was writing this at the beginning of August, it

was more like autumn – pouring with rain and 12°C. But they are forecasting a hot August –

so let’s hope that they were right for once and we’ve been basking in the sun for the last

month!

The Committee hasn’t been resting though: we have been tinkering with the website and have

added some new headings so keep an eye on “Latest News” as this is where we’ll be letting

you know about anything interesting coming up. On this page you can now also find a link to

Daphne’s Group Leader’s monthly update which will keep you up to date on curriculum

information.

You will see that we are holding an “Open Afternoon” on 29 September, aimed both at current

members and the general public. Please come along and support us – especially if you have

been thinking about joining a new group but would like more information about it.

We are also planning a “New Members” meeting at the beginning of October (exact date still

to be agreed at time of writing). All people who have joined during 2015 will be sent an

invitation and questionnaire. However, as we have not held one of these meetings for several

years, if you joined prior to 2015 and would be interested in coming along, just give me a ring

or drop me an email (contact details can be found on the back of this newsletter).

I am sure, like me, you are looking forward to getting back to your groups; we have included a

copy of the latest Activities Sheet in the newsletter, so have a look through. Perhaps this is

the year to think about trying something new?

Editorial

Can it really be that I am writing the Editorial for the September Newsletter? Time flies by so

quickly! Our U3A has, as usual, been making the most of the summer months with trips to

Bempton Cliffs, the Sunderland Air Show, The Last Night of the Proms in Scarborough, a

holiday in Norfolk and a trip to see The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain!

All of these trips are represented in this issue of the Newsletter and make interesting reading.

The photographers who have supplied us with a pictorial view of the excursions have done a

great job too so thanks to Geoff Tweddle, Ken Bladen, Jean Devasagayam and Howard

Leake. Last, but not least, a big 'thank you' to the people who have organised everything for

us.

I hope that you are enjoying the new look Newsletter and have a chance to look at the updated

Website pages, which are all a means of keeping up to date with what’s happening in Saltburn

U3A.

Birdwatching Group

The bird watchers set off for Bempton Cliffs on June 8th and arrived at our destination a couple of

hours later. It was cold and sunny when we arrived, but everyone was well prepared for whatever came our way. Our first stop was to the café where there were tree sparrows flying around which was great to see.

A skylark was spotted above the fields of Red Campion and the site was well supported by all the visitors. The birds we had travelled to see were in abundance – on the cliff face, on the water and were a spectacular sight to see in flight – obviously very busy tending to

their nests and young. How they manage to cling to the cliffs is a wonder. There were many gannets, some cormorants, puffins and kittiwakes.

Another visit to the café and shop led to the end of a very busy day, a group photograph was taken and everyone boarded the minibus at 3pm for the journey home.

Saltburn District U3A continues to offer a balanced curriculum with a good mix of physical, craft, and intellectually stimulating activities.

If you have an idea for a new group, a talent or special interest you would like to share, please get in touch. We will give you all the support you need to get your group up and running

Groups can also be the self-help type; you could start with just two people interested in a particular subject and who would like to learn more about it

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain.

Judging from the crowd reaction on the night, I think it’s fair to say that everyone had a great night. A couple of weeks before the trip I did hear someone saying that they would not be going because two hours of plunkety plunk on a ukulele was not their idea of entertainment. Tennants Auctioneers, where the event was held, is a modern, purpose-built venue de-signed to cater for theatre/exhibition/conference type events. Because the seating is not fixed permanently in place, the chairs can be arranged to suit and everyone has a good view of the stage. The acoustics are great. I believe I am correct in saying that the orchestra normally comprises of eight members, but on the night we saw them there were only seven.

They played a variety of ukuleles – concert, bass, soprano and a piccolo.

I have said to people that if you had just turned on a radio and heard them playing you would never have guessed they were all ukuleles. You would certainly have said there was a double bass in there, maybe a fiddle and a few notes from a keyboard or piano. It was a long way from plunkety plunk!

For me the highlight of the evening was when the orchestra mem-bers each played their own piece of music, but they all played at the same time and finished by coming together all playing the same piece. It was brilliant. If you ever get the chance to go and see them you will not be disappointed.

Indeed, if you are ever round Leyburn way on a day out call in at Tennants. They have a nice restaurant and coffee shop. It’s also a very interesting place to look round and see the antiques.

“““Last night of the Proms"- Scarborough

How lucky were we! It was a glorious warm day when two coaches set off for Scarborough

Open Air Theatre to see "Last Night of the Proms" The town was also celebrating "Armed

Forces Day" and consequently was buzzing with thousands of people coming to see the fun.

As the coach drew up at the South Bay, we were lucky enough to see a Vulcan bomber

making its flight and, during the day, there was loads to see as a result of Armed Forces day.

On to the show, we had good seats and waited eagerly for the show. First we listened to the

Military Wives Choir before Alfie Boe, finally appeared. He certainly got the crowd eating out

of his hand. The Orchestra first

played a selection from "Les

Miserable’s" and Alfie sang one

or two numbers from that show

and then he sang a selection of

his Italian songs, one or two,

such as Volare, the audience

joined in.

There was also a beautiful

soprano called Angel Blue who

had a fantastic voice and did

some lovely classical numbers, including Carmen, one of my favourites.

During the second half Alfie did a

couple of numbers from The

Who's Quadrophenia which he is

performing at the Royal Albert

Hall. Towards the end, the

Orchestra launched into the usual

Last Night of the Proms favourites,

such as Jerusalem and we

finished with a wonderful firework

display.

The downside of a big event such

as this is the inevitable queuing for toilets and drinks, but it was a lovely warm night and

everyone was good natured and happy, so it didn't matter too much. All of us lugged round

bags filled with warm clothes or rugs to put on when it got cold, but it didn't so we just took

them all home again.

Getting out of the Open Air Theatre was a bit tricky but we all managed without any mishaps.

Mind you, we did have to go searching for half a dozen or so people who had gone the wrong

way and couldn't find the coaches.

At last we managed to round everyone up and got on our way, arriving home at about 12.30

am, tired but feeling the day had been well worth the effort.

Saltburn & District U3A Norfolk Holiday

Forty two members of Saltburn U3A recently enjoyed their annual group holiday visiting Norfolk.

Staying in Norwich proved a very good central base for lots of our excursions.

Our first day included a

journey on the narrow

gauge railway from

Aylsham to Wroxham,

followed by a very restful

trip on the Broads. This

set the scene for what

was to be a full and

interesting week.

A visit to Sandringham

wi th i ts beaut i fu l

gardens, museum of

vehicles and, of course,

the house fulfilled all our

expectations.

A trip over the border

into Suffolk took us to Sutton Hoo, the National Trust archaeological site, where we were treated

to a lively talk on our Anglo Saxon ancestors and a site visit to see the burial grounds still being

excavated.

Back to Norfolk and another set of gardens and steam trains at Bressingham. The steam driven

gallopers ride proved too

good to resist and lots of us

scrambled onto the horses,

only to find it was more

difficult to dismount (older

legs are not as flexible as

t h e y o n c e w e r e ) .

However, a return to

childhood memories was

enjoyed by all brave

enough.

Evenings in the hotel

allowed time for some

social interaction, getting to

know fellow members who

we had perhaps not come across before, helped along by a “beetle drive” and a light-hearted

quiz. There was also a lovely swimming pool of which the more energetic among us took

advantage.

A wonderful week and the cry on every ones' lips is “Where are we going next year?”

Sunderland Airshow

Anxious glances flickered around U3A members and gasps of astonishment as shiny metal

passed within a few feet of shiny metal at ridiculous speed …. and that was just on the A19

getting there!

Actually, we all got there relaxed, well in time to walk in the sun from the harbour down to the

centre of the display area – many members carrying chairs, lunch bags, rucksacks with wet

weather gear and some with camera bags weighing as much as a set of golf clubs!

There was a bit of poodling about as the forecast was for rain and there was some shuffling of

the programme, but at last the first 'planes came on the scene heralding four hours of amazing

acrobatics, precision flying, historic aircraft and guys jumping out of aircraft.

Special mention must be made of Gerald Cooper, European

aerobatics champion, who did the seeming impossible and made

his ‘plane fly sideways like a crab before shooting skyward and

faking an engine failure with lots of smoke. Stunning.

A DFDS ferry parked itself in the bay …. it would have made a

brilliant vantage point except it left before the Red Arrows!

This legendary team hit new

highs with their routines which

really cannot be described

(but we have the pictures!).

and blue smoke at 400mph

left you dazed.

The airshow is a great family event and there were so many folk sat on the grass, apparently

quite unaffected by the displays. We saw one family party singing ‘Happy Birthday’ while the Red

Arrows were overhead – not an upward glance!!

By a slip of timing the Tornado fighter came on about 5 minutes before the coach was supposed

to leave. What a dilemma! Do you want to watch £15m of taxpayers money flying at 600mph

making enough noise to curdle milk, or get on the coach? Tricky!

Anyway, back we went – thankful to be

out of the increasing chill and pleased

the coach stayed below Mach 1. Many

and Pip Chinn for organising everything

so well.

September Membership Matters Summer is over and September brings the restart of classes and with it the renewal of membership for some members. Although over 750 have renewed or joined since the end of March, we still have about 75 who are yet to renew. Group leaders will be checking for cream coloured cards – remember renewals can be made:

Meeting. The fee is still £8.00. We do try to have a presence at the Theatre Coffee Mornings too, but this is not always

possible. As most of you will have noticed the Membership Table has moved into the main body of the hall. We have found this to be more congenial, but also acknowledge that at very busy renewal times in March and April we may need to use the small room again.
